After the SDCC trailer I'm convinced that the Discovery will surprise us. The trailer's quick shot of the ship was static and barely moved before the warp effect; IMO it was pretty hastily done for the trailer because they haven't yet gotten around to doing the VFX of the episodes she's in. As such, compared to the completed VFX shots of the Shenzhou, Discovery has yet to full spread her wings in completed material.
And as unlikely as it seems now, it's still possible that they can bait and switch us out a completely new ship for Discovery, and this whole thing has been a massive deception. We haven't seen any shots of the Discovery sets yet (aside from MAYBE a lab or sickbay or something), and certainly nothing showing an actual diagram of the Discovery in the background of a finished shot. While I"ve grown to like what we've got, I think there's some latitude for us to be blown away.

Reflecting the current US administration? Why are all starfleet ships on the trailer so orange?
Ha-ha....Reflecting the current US administration?
Jesus, I hope so.
That one shot of the Discovery in the trailer was probably the ugliest single part of the whole trailer... and there were a whole lot of unwashed klingons in it.
I see but why are ships orange?See, that's the kicker to me. The ONE shot they put in of Discovery, and they do what looks to me as a *really* unflattering angle. That, and the renders and such we've seen so far, especially compared to the Shenzhou, just seem to... Unfinished to me. Like I said, I think we're in for SOME sort of surprise when our first look a her really comes around.

They're still hiding their main ship. That is not a good sign.

They're trying to be mysterious about it. They want it to be a bigger surprise.
The model is done.
And the ship was in the trailer, and it was on the comic-con poster
Are we sure it's their "main ship"? For all we know, 10 of the 15 episodes will be centred on the USS Shenzhou. They're still hiding their main ship. That is not a good sign.
IThey're hiding the CGI model, because it looks like shit. And they know it looks like shit. And they want to avoid the backlash they had the first time they showed a model that looked like shit. So they kept it hidden. Even though it will be the focal point of the series.

In your opinion. They're hiding the CGI model, because it looks like shit.
Doubtful. And they know it looks like shit.
Really doubtful. And they want to avoid the backlash they had the first time they showed a model that looked like shit. So they kept it hidden. Even though it will be the focal point of the series.
If any of this were even remotely plausible (which I really don't think it is), we can look to the past at another very applicable analogue, in the form of the NX-01 "Akiraprise". Paramount made the interesting and probably not-too-smart choice of releasing the dorsal view as the first official picture of the NX-01 - I think it was on the cover of TV Guide. There was crying and screaming - lamenting and butthurt - over how identical it was to the Akira design. And the top view admittedly WAS very Akira-like. When we started seeing other views of the ship, particularly the official 3/4 view, it wasn't as bad. Attention completely waned after the first couple of weeks on the provenance of the ship design and focused squarely on the story. At that point, people had more legitimate things to scream about, to be fair. This is only postponing the backlash until later. To a point when it might already be too late. They have a serious problem at hand, and it's obvious they don't know how to handle it, and time's running out to solve it with the release date coming closer and closer.
Or they just didn't want to put it in the trailer for spoiler/reveal purposes. Just because something is not in a trailer does not correlate directly to production issues or bad design. The SDCC trailer still pretty much revolves solely around the 2-part pilot episode and basically just expanded on things we'd already seen in trailer one. I agree the angle of the Discovery going to warp was trash even though the VFX for the warp effect was great (very TMP-esque), but I don't think that two second shot was in the trailer to show off the ship. It merely established that it existed and that it potentially ties into the whole "new way to fly" line. More of a question mark tease over anything else. They're still hiding their main ship. That is not a good sign.
At this point the design should be finished, otherwise they run into great trouble with post-production of the special effects. And the current design looks like shit. And the producers know that, otherwise they would show it in the trailer.
I don't know what's going on there behind the scenes. But whatever it is, it's probably going to make for a great documentary once the DVDs are out...
