The new trailer says one thing about mass appeal to me...

J.J. Abrams think ST is a big dumb space adventure and it annoys me when fans basically try to rationalize it.

Fortunately for us optimists, folks who have actually seen the film disagree with you.

You can have whatever opinion you want but it doesn't mean you are right.

Am I Bitter, Yes I am because it saddens me that something so great as ST go down the toliet.

Star Trek was never as intelligent or thought-provoking as many fans make it out to be.

If you don't appreciate Star Trek, then don't call yourself a fan. It always annoys me when people put down past efforts to support "progress"

But don't let my bitterness spoil your fun.

Somehow, I doubt your sincerity.

Yeah it's hard to suppress eye rolling in my sockets these day.

I think expecting any new series to maintain a 10 million audience is dreaming, sadly...
Very ''TRUE'':( My generation seams to have PERMA-A.D.D! If it dosen't interest them for more then 5 seconds there off doing something else!

Not sure if you took umbrage, that's not what I meant.

If Heroes can't maintain 6-7 million, and genre shows come and go quicker than you can say "boo", what chance will Star Trek have?

What is the animated Star Wars pulling in audience wise, anyway? If 10 million plus, and ST can rid itself of the loser nerd stigma with this movie, then there is hope...

Yes. Informed opinions are for losers. Posturing on the Internet = WIN!

And do realize your response cuts both ways.

If you don't appreciate Star Trek,

I do, thank you very much.

then don't call yourself a fan.

If it means not having to associate with attitudes like yours, I'll be happy to strip the label.

Star Trek was responsible for the Civil Rights Movement. It's true, I read it on the Internet!

Here. Try this:

Who would those folks be? Kevin Smith--a self proclaimed Star Wars fans? Will Wheaton? Pfft.

Star Trek was never as intelligent or thought-provoking as many fans make it out to be. That so many of us got started on Trek as children and were capable of processing the "morals" even then speaks to the level of intellect that Trek has traditionally targeted.
Nor has it ever had helmsmen posing as ninjas.

He also loves nuBSG. I'd call his opinion gold. :techman:

There's also the comments from a screener I reposted here. Carson Dyle is on record over at the RPF as being staunchly anti-Abrams rboot, until he actually saw the film. He's still saying good things about it, claiming it to be the most heavily character-driven Trek film yet. I think we're in good shape that there will be more in store than just mindless explosions.

 Yup.

Is that from "And the Sky Full of Stars"?

That's Malcom McDowell being tortured in A Clockwork Orange.

Which I'm ashamed to admit is a film I've never seen. For all I know, the point of that scene could be totally different from what we're discussing here.

If the mass media says ST is cool, people will jump in.

That's good for Star trek. :techman:

No it's not. Star Trek was awesome when no one cared (*cough* DS9 *cough*). Anytime they mainstream anything, TPTB basically strip out any complexity (dumb it down). This fantasy that Star Trek will get back on track after the "reboot" is worse than fan boy wishful thinking. J.J. Abrams think ST is a big dumb space adventure and it annoys me when fans basically try to rationalize it. Star Trek is not a Space Adventure?

Most of the people I know are casual fans. They'll say things like... "Did you know that Kirstie Alley played Spock's daughter in Star Trek 3?" or "Deep Space Nine sucked- that's why it was the last Star Trek series" or "The best episode was that one where Kirk fights the lizard-man"... these are all actual examples. These are people in their 30's who grew up with Star Trek... but were never *into it*.

I have been approached this week by several people who wanted to know if I saw the kick-ass Star Trek trailer that played during Heroes. The casual fans in my life all seem universally excited about the new film... they'll likely go see it and share it with their children.

There were stories a couple months back saying that it was shown to the Paramount big-wigs, and the response was overwhelmingly good. There is also the positive response to the scene previews that Abrams let people see.

It's a little more complicated than that, yes, but Alex is being forced to watch something unpleasant. The intended result of that is truly diabolical, but I'll say no more.

And you really must see A Clockwork Orange, if you haven't yet. Soon.

"Dear god, no! Turn it off! Turn it off! Turn it off! I'll watch anything else on UPN! Anything! Even Homeboys in Outer Space!"

I expect to see breasts in bullet-time, and they should explode.
Didn't they try that on ENTERPRISE? are that could have been all the ''boobies'' being swong around.
It doesn't have to be dumbed down, it just has to be accessible. Take time to introduce and motivate the characters and it's all good. Be too insider-ish and you alienate viewers.

I won't, and neither will the 12 people going with me on opening night.

J.

How do you even respond to someone like this who thinks his opinion is right yet yours isn't?
They're both doing it, it's not just Yminale.

There's a thing I've noticed in the Trex XI forum. Both sides keep taking an opinionated high ground. And if you don't agree you're "not bright enough to get it" or some variation thereof. The level of condecension on both sides is kind of unfortunate.

Now, to the topic. I saw the trailer in front ow "Watchmen" last night (I really really liked Watchmen for the 2 cents that it's worth). and there was a buzz after the trailer played. Pretty much apathy for everything else sans Terminator 4.

As far as the mass appeal thing goes, if you're Paramount that's probably the holy grail. They'll want it to appeal to everybody. Personally can't say that I blame them though I do go into this hoping it'll still at least resemble the Trek i've loved in all of it's other incarnations.

Anyways, I return you to your talking down to each other. Go easy though, we all want the same thing really when you boil it down and get past the posturing and pontificating
