The new trailer says one thing about mass appeal to me...

There are an awful lot of peripheral ST fans out there. A Paramount poll years ago proved this. What they have been waiting for all along is a more accessible, mainstream type film that everyone can enjoy. Call it dumbed down if you will, but I think of it more as streamlined. Even more than before, I'm expecting this film to bring in new fans, not a huge amount but enough of a number to support a TV show on a network, where 10 million viewers in this day and age is enough to keep the show on the air. STNG avged 17 million in syndication!

exactly. remember, STIV is not counted amongst Trekkies as better than STII. but it brought in the numbers nevertheless.

I'd rather canon was a little compromised this time around but the movie delivered the numbers and the future of Trek. I want Trek to survive.

We don't know exactly how much Trek has been dumbed down for this new movie, but if the franchise is emaciated in the name of wide appeal, I wouldn't consider that much of a victory.

Great point.

I think this is just what Trek needs at this point to keep it viable.

You know one think? Lots of people actually want to like Star Trek. They just can't, not now, with the 1960 camp, the convoluted storylines, the technobabble. Don't get me wrong: I like them, but I understand it's not for everybody's taste. But Star Trek has much more than this. The characters, the ships, the fun, the adventure, the thrill, the drama: it has it all. It has all the potential to be a bona fide cultural myth, and not be the object of adoration of a lucky fews devoted fans. Just like superhero movies broke the stereotype and now deliver all the spectrum of genre (from TDK to FF), I really hope that this movie will usher a new generation of space operae, like the SW prequels could have done, if done well.

Agreed.

ST positivity is important but adventure seems to be they key for universally successful Trek.

It doesn't have to be dumbed down, it just has to be accessible. Take time to introduce and motivate the characters and it's all good. Be too insider-ish and you alienate viewers.

I expect to see breasts in bullet-time, and they should explode.
Didn't they try that on ENTERPRISE? are that could have been all the ''boobies'' being swong around.

I'll buy that for a dollar! :D

Is "emaciated" really the word you meant to use there?

1 : to cause to lose flesh so as to become very thin <cattle emaciated by illness>
2 : to make feeble

It's quite appropriate IMO.

If the mass media says ST is cool, people will jump in.

That's good for Star trek. :techman:

No it's not. Star Trek was awesome when no one cared (*cough* DS9 *cough*). Anytime they mainstream anything, TPTB basically strip out any complexity (dumb it down). This fantasy that Star Trek will get back on track after the "reboot" is worse than fan boy wishful thinking. J.J. Abrams think ST is a big dumb space adventure and it annoys me when fans basically try to rationalize it. Am I Bitter, Yes I am because it saddens me that something so great as ST go down the toliet.

But don't let my bitterness spoil your fun.

Fortunately for us optimists, folks who have actually seen the film disagree with you.

Am I Bitter, Yes I am because it saddens me that something so great as ST go down the toliet.

Star Trek was never as intelligent or thought-provoking as many fans make it out to be. That so many of us got started on Trek as children and were capable of processing the "morals" even then speaks to the level of intellect that Trek has traditionally targeted.

But don't let my bitterness spoil your fun.

Somehow, I doubt your sincerity.

That's pretty much what I said, except with fewer words:lol:
