The new ship is like a galaxy quest parody!

We keep hearing this in thread after thread and I just don't get it, it's like the new "it's going to be dark like BSG!" (which turned out to be horse shit)

What about the new ship says parody ? If someone wants to take a stab at it, please be specific about the design details that would give somebody going to the Cinema to think it was a spoof.

The new ship has a very contemporary design and balance aesthetic, which a number of posters don't like because it doesn't say "future of the 1960s." It's not made of clean, mechanical lines and shapes beyond the saucer and dish. It goes a bit organic, and reverses a lot of what we'd expect from "the Enterprise." The nacelles come up to a bulge. The pylons are reverse of the TMP ship. The neck sits back. Everything is connected in an organic way, as if it's all one odd shape, rather than components locked together. It has a slight resemblance to a rubber ducky, and less to a battleship. There ya go.

And it doesn't bother me a bit.

I think it's a parody because the design elements are exaggerated, not refined. Just like Manga.

I think the classic 1950s car idea is exactly the right instinct, I just think it's too much.

I don't think it's a question of them not thinking this through, I think it's a case of them over thinking it. Less is more.

Here's what I would do with the elements that are there.

Here's what they actually did. As you can see, all I did, and all it really needs, is to be toned down some. The volume doesn't need to be up to 11.

I don't know man.... I see nothing that says parody or Galaxy Quest on this new Enterprise.
I just shrug and move on when I see it.

Here's what I would do with the elements that are there.
The photoshopped versions of the ship I've seen today have something in common: all of them are attempts at making the ship look closer to things we've seen before. It's as if fans couldn't accept anything as Star Trek if it's not desperately middle of the road and safe.

Yeah, I don't see any parodic elements to the design at all.

In any event, the Protector itself is a pretty cool Trek-inspired design and wouldn't be at all out of place or a disappointment in a "serious" science fiction adventure movie. Hell, it's better looking than a lot of ship designs from the modern Trek TV shows and movies.

Oh, and I've yet to see a fan "improvement" of the design that's actually an improvement.

"Improvement" is not properly defined as "making it look more like other things that I'm used to seeing."

As for those bussard collectors - I'm pretty sure they'll be lit up in the movie regardless of the suggestions of Photoshoppers.

This movie goes to bed dreaming it will be as successful as Galaxy Quest.

Actually, the studio execs would have nightmares if they thought this movie would do no better than "Galaxy Quest."

I wish GQ had been more than a modest success - I'd like to have seen another.

Well given "Nemesis", I'm hoping it reaches some "Galaxy Quest"-level of crossover appeal at least.

That would be... most of modern Star Trek. "Middle of the road and safe" is not the way to reinvigorate the Trek brand though it does seem to be the thought process of most "Trekkies" on various levels where their 'baby' is concerned.

Like I said in the original thread, the ship looks exactly as I had expected it to. Would I have done some things different sure - I want a red racing stripe on the engineering hull with a delta symbol and I sure do hope those nacelle caps glow orange.

The front of the nacelles seems a little too bulky for me. Other than that, I don't really have an issue with the design. My main fear was that they would go way overboard with needless details and random crap attached all over the place. The end result is much cleaner and smooth looking than what I expected. The beef I always had with fan attempts is how it looks like they just took the TOS ship and coated it in a layer of pointless detailing. This Abrams version has changed the proportions and removed the straight lines, but it's allowed the design to remain as clean looking as the original.

As I said over in the main ship thread:

The new Enterprise looks like a dog with its penis extended (lipstick-style), ready for action. This is definitely Kirk's ship.

There are a lot of people here who intend to hate everything about this movie from the get-go and intend to fulfill every part of their own prophecy to the letter. "Parody" is probably just the first word that came to mind and they'll stick to that to the bitter end.

After all, this new movie is their personal equivalent to Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

Spoken like somebody who hasn't actually read many of the comments.

^ So you're in complete agreement with the knucklehead who says the new Enterprise is something right out of MAD Magazine? One line, no explanation, no follow up... the Enterprise is something from MAD Magazine because it's something from MAD Magazine.

The basic outline of Hot Shots is a parody of Top Gun. Equating the new Enterprise to parody/spoof is akin to anyone crying about the sky falling because a starship registry number begins with zero.

I don't know how you expect anyone to read your posts.

I can't get past your avatar...

It's a parody of nothing. It's just the third version of the Enterprise NCC-1701.

The jarring part is exactly how they mix the familiar with the new. I can see the "organic" feel that has been mentioned above in the neck area, lower hull, and engine struts. It flows more like one piece than in the other versions, and it's not bad on its own. But then on top of all that is the throw-back TMP primary hull. To me, it doesn't fit.

It tends to look as if its creators were conflicted about how different to really make it. In a way, I wish they'd have either gone the safe route all around, and went with the more conservative changes as in the primary hull. Or, that they would've completely modified the shape and flow of the primary hull to better fit the rest of the ship as they've designed it.

I do think "familiar" was necessary, but not safe. Making the Enterprise look massively different from what it's been (or what even non-fans recognize as the Enterprise) would be no different than casting Jim Kirk as 6'3" 220 lbs. with auburn hair and green eyes. Or making Spock blond.
