The New Muse CD - The Resistance

So today The Resistance will be played online certain websites in each country, as a stream. Then released on Monday.

Here in Australia it be streamed at midday on triple j.

I missed it on Triple J, but I have been digging "Uprising" of late.

I enjoyed it ... but need more listens to it, but I'm impressed by it. Gonna look at getting it by other means, but sometime in the future I'll look at buying it sometime later in the month or next month.

I've heard it all. When it's good it's great - Unnatural Selection and MK Ultra mainly. United States of Eurasia I accept is dreadful, but I do enjoy its bombastic crapness. Uprising and the Exogenesis trilogy are good too, though the trilogy will need a few more listens.

But when this album is bad, it is downright rotten. Undisclosed Desires is the single worst song I've heard all year, and I Belong to You is terrible as well, just not as offensively so.

I never thought it would be the case that with all albums out on the same day - Muse, Porcupine Tree, Thrice and Every Time I Die - that Muse were the one I'd be saying 'huh, I'll buy it some other time when it's cheaper'. I've loved Muse for 8 years now but The Resistance is, on the whole, a poor album. A great album by normal standards perhaps, but by Muse's standards - admittedly very high in my book - it is rubbish. And that saddens me.

I have avoided the bittorrent DL as I am going to buy it on Monday anyway, but I am very much looking forward to it. I'm not going to stream it either, I'd rather hear it properly through a decent stereo.

This is a great month, Pearl Jam's Backspacer is out the monday after, and Alice In Chains' Black Gives Way to Blue the monday after that.

I'm really digging it. At first I rather liked Undisclosed Desires, but the more I play it the less likeable it gets...

However, the opposite is true for the Resistance and MK Ultra.

I'm a really big Muse fan, and I've got to admit, I feel a little disappointed in this album as a whole. When I first heard Uprising I thought "yeah, it sounds like Muse are going to be on form on this album" (I heard United States of Eurasia before that and didn't think much of it), and then I heard "Undisclosed Desires" and I was sat there thinking "What the fuck?!" I would have stopped listening to the album if it wasn't for Unnatural Selection and MK Ultra following. But then again, they follow it with a dreadful song in the form of "I Belong to You". Listening to Exogenesis right now, the first part, it sounds good.

As a whole though, this album was below par for Muse. But still, I'm happy they've brought a new album out, and atleast a few good songs.

Hm, OK listened to it once. Very good, of course it will take many more listens to really come up with a firm opinion of it that I will stand by. It's not screaming instant classic at me like their last 3 albums did as soon as I heard them though.

This is a great month, Pearl Jam's Backspacer is out the monday after, and Alice In Chains' Black Gives Way to Blue the monday after that.

"The Fixer" gives me a bad vibe. It's not simply the "happy" vibe that puts me off, but it's the fact that it sounds like a steamroller of shit with an awesome bridge.

^ I think it is a great track, I was shocked at first but it has grown and grown on me. This should be an interesting PJ album, it's only 34 minutes long which is very unusual. I'm expecting a more upbeat pop orientated album than we've seen before.

I listened to the Muse album another 2 times last night and have further thoughts. Putting aside Exogenesis for a moment, the strongest tracks are those that, for want of a better word, are typical of Muse. That's not to say they are predictable or derivative, but there are 5 tracks of the first 8 that have that instantly recognisable Muse groove, crashing guitars, and super tight, fast funky rhythm unit work.

Where they have wandered and experimented with the very nature of their sound on a few early tracks I think the album has not met expectations. I'd expect a band this good to be able to diversify more comfortably to be honest.

Of course Exogenesis smashes that last statement apart, it's a great piece, or pieces. A shame some of the earlier experimentation falls flat because had the whole album been up to this standard we'd be discussing if it was their best yet.

I'm currently listening to it now, but drinking at the same time ... so probably when I'm sober i'll do a proper review on facebook or somewhere else. I plan on listening to it tonight until the footy show

I bought the Resistance by Muse, and The Incident by Porcupine Tree, both on the day of release. I've been listening to the PT album nonstop, so poor Muse hasn't had much of a look-in. That said, from playing the disc a couple of times, I am quite enjoying The Resistance so far.
