The New Klingons

Do you like the design of these new Klingons? What was your gut reaction?

A relatively slim majority... on a nerd-heavy forum whose membership represents a fraction of 1% of the total Trek viewing audience.

Plus, the poll question doesn't ask about consistency. My lukewarm reaction to the new Klingons was all about aesthetics. I just don't like the look much.

@Refuge's extreme and angry reaction is to the "inconsistency". The poll asked a different question. ;)

Its not even clear cut, at this moment its 47.4 like, 52.6 dislike. There is a grand total of six more dislikes than likes.

Making the Klingons even more alien would have been interesting.

I miss Farscape.

Oh the screams would have been louder. This is pretty far for many. I think it suits them and the evolutionary background of heavily armored predator ancestry we have.

I don't like the Klingon makeover .They really don't like Klingons to me they look more like Xindi reptillians.

Imagine an all-CG Klingon, 10 ft tall, with fangs and spikes, and finally looking like real, dangerous aliens.

And the fan reactions would have been something to see.

Or even the Klingon change from TOS to TMP. How long did that go without explanation?

And the explanation really is hog wash. A virus that starts having the host grow forehead bones in such perfect patterns, with such variety.

Yeah, really the rationale was that the incorporation of some human elements into their DNA caused them to resemble human beings more.

As far as Star Trek is concerned, that's reasonably good science. ;)

How come this Mr Fuller .. cough.. 'genius' didn't reinvent humans? They always look the same. What.. are us humans immune from his reimagining cleverness? Above it all are we? Make ugly Klingons.. easy target. We're supposed to believe a Klingon can be any number of looks, sects and variations, especially for shock value. However the good old human, once a basic model .. always a basic model.

You are right. I do feel protective of the known quantity and of the original creators' vision. Tweaks are one thing, full on changes .. well when you read what that Fuller guy said about wanting to change things it was like he was showing off and wasn't caring about any kind of relevance to what he was hoping to exploit. I disrespect him. His Klingons are what they are..

Different planet indeed.. and I will step away.
Do you really not know who Brian Fuller is or are you just being sarcastic?
If you aren't then I highly recommend checking out Pushing Daisies and Hannibal.

Brian Fuller is awesome.

Totally agree @DarKush (the Hur'q would be great to see!).

Using the Klingons once again reeks of lack of imagination or even a willingness to take risks and do something different with regards to story telling--especially given how many Klingon characters have been cast and their announcements were made along with Starfleet then this isn't just going to be a single plot that will be revealed in the pilot episode.

Thanks Bry. I've always been intrigued by the Hur'q, and enjoyed the little bit we got of them in the Left Hand of Destiny series.

I got mixed feelings about using the Klingons again. I mean Klingons are fixtures of Trek lore, the adversary that screams Trek more than any others, including the Romulans or Borg IMO. And while I do think there is something to attempts to create new enemies-Cardassians, Dominion, Species 8472, Son'a, Remans, Suliban, Xindi, etc., it's like they always go back to the Klingons. I have to wonder if it's because Klingons are synonymous with Trek, that the suits overestimate the Klingons' appeal and brand, or for budget reasons-with them likely having a lot of Klingon uniforms, makeup, ships, and other props already made up or stored away. However with this radical clothing/uniform redesign for the Klingons as seen in the Discovery trailer, I don't know if they will be using old uniforms or props.

For the time period, using the Klingons does make sense, though personally I would be fine with the Tholians, Sheliak, or some other species, new or otherwise. So I do agree that going back to the Klingons does show a lack of imagination and perhaps a fear to try something new. And even though they are going back to the well with the Klingons perhaps they are trying to freshen things up a bit with this redesign.

Ah yeah....Farscape style would have been awesome!!!
And with John raving around too!
:D

It's funny. I loved Farcape with like, 90% of everyone appearing on-screen in heavy alien makeup.
Then, I loved nuBSG, where EJO said he'd "walk" if a single rubber masked alien showed up.
Both great shows, but with diametrically opposite aesthetics.
Whatever Discover has in this area won't matter if the show has either great stories or crappy stories.

The design itself I don't really have a problem with. It looks fine. And I couldn't care less that it's not exactly the way Klingons have looked in the past (the three or four iterations, that is). Klingon looks have changed a lot. This isn't a new thing.

Will say that I hope they do something different with the Klingons. We got our fill of Vikings in space with TNG. I want to see a new side of them, or for them to go back to the TOS characterization.
