The New Enterprise Reveald

Tamiya is /tah-MEE-uh/ and Aoshima is /aah-oh-shee-ma/.

Not according to Scott Hard's podcasts at Hobbylink Japan!

Well, I can't speak for them, but I have a master's degree in Japanese, lived in Japan for over six years, and have been working as a professional translator (J->E) for almost 20 years.

I'm pretty sure *I* am right.

With that secondary hull and dish sticking out so far it's as if it's saying, "Look at my big erection...and tremble."

It seems to stick out just as far as the original Enterprise.

That's true.

In fact, the design change is simply to attach the neck more centrally and in a more sensibly balanced way to the length of the lower hull rather than to have most of the lower hull "hanging off" the back of the neck. The relative position of the saucer and lower hull haven't really changed much if at all.

We have yet to have any confirmation as to how accurate Ancient's ortho is.

Personally, I think he's pretty close (there's a problem with the nacelles, but other than that), but we're a ways from using it for any kind of authoritative comparisons.

This is the comparison pic for my speculation:

I think it is farther forward, but I think it's alright for the new design. The more integrated neck is a pretty good idea. Even if those bizzare folds on the neck do ruin the effect somewhat.

You're not lining up the forward edge of the necks...a quick edit...

So yeah, there's an extension on the dish, but it's not that pronounced.

Any thoughts on the future of "trek art"; (official production things, fan-ships, toolkits, etc.) are we going to see a preponderance of humpy cowled turbine nacelles and curvey swept back dorsals?

Rephrasing: Does anyone think this style will become as ingrained and regularly seen, in all trek art and design, as the "looks" from TOS, TMP, and TNG have?

Sorry if this has been discussed already. :)

I think, since up against the rest of the assembled Trek record, this movie'll be the odd man out, it'll be rejected like a bad organ transplant, even if it does wind up making money.

I don't think it'll be considered canon for at least 10 years for the fans, only 1 for guys like me who can work in new ideas.
I'm trying to make some designs that blend into canon. I'd love to see the rest of the TrekBBS crew do the same thing. :techman:

10 years! :) The inspiration (or frustration) for my post came from me realizing today that my latest "napkin sketches" seemed to all have humped up nacelle shapes, and rather curve-heavy lines. I've always found it useful to "be different"
(but not usually too far from canon-art) every-so-often, but this new design got me wondering how all of this might be incorporated into a standard/accepted trek "visual language". I'd be interested in seeing your evolved/incorporated concepts.

Well, people like you and I like new ideas and designs. For us, we're already reimagining the old ships with more JJ designs. (Hell, I'm STILL waiting on a decent redo of the TOS Romulan BoP) But the DIE-HARD fans are going to take a while to get Star Trek XI accepted into true canon.

Speaking of redesigns, judexavier, I'd love to have you design some ships for a mod of Star Trek Legacy in the works. :adore: :D

Well, should I ever get myself to finally model something again, then I will use the new design-elements for sure (I have an idea for a smaller ship already)... but I'm just to damn lazy to sit myself down and start pushing polygons... ;)

You think you could do a quick sketch to give us a taste?
