The New Enterprise in 3D! ... NOW FINISHED (threads merged)

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Okay, Madman1701A, I think you're on your way, but allow me if you will to point out a few things I see:

  • Your primary hull dish is too large for the entire model. I would start with a smaller dish, but that's the same thickness at the rim as the one you have now. Now, look carefully at the borderline in the connection between the supporting pylon and the rim of the vessel to see how this dish should taper. In this case, the beginning of the "protrusion" of the dish down does not start exactly half-way in-between the perimeter and the center, as you have it. Draw a straight line in your mind from the center of the "nipple" to the rim, and at about 40% of the way (not 50%), there's where the protrusion stops and the dish flattens out. And on this model, it's pretty flat, not so gently tapering like on Jefferies' 1701.
  • Because your dish is so wide, you have your nacelles swept-back like wings, much more like the 1701A in the movies. Make your engine pylons straighter, as if there were a rod that's perpendicular to the secondary hull, then build the exterior shell of the engine pylons so that they sweep on both sides toward the bottom.
  • Then pull your engines closer to the dish -- way closer, dangerously close (maybe my second least favorite part of the new design is how close these suckers are).
  • The support pylon connecting the new dish to the new fuselage is more delta-shaped -- you have it flat like in the TV show. Notice in the photo how it gets broader in the back and narrower at the front -- the seam actually runs down the side of the fuselage and touches the seam of the engine support pylon. If you want another angle, there actually is one: in the first movie preview, on the platform with all the welder guys, the camera appears positioned at the base of the support pylon, looking up toward the stumps where the engine pylons will go.
  • The taper on the underside of the secondary hull extends further forward than where you have it, though where it stops, it still leaves a rounded "tummy," not a flat airline fuselage.
  • I think the engines themselves do not appear to be as long as you have them. The pylons connect not behind the cowlings (those droopy-eyed things I still can't explain) but at the bottom of them.
This is a pretty good exercise in seeing how much you can see from just one angle, and ignoring how much of the traditional Enterprise design your mind will naturally try to fill in on its own. By the way, it's not a hideous ship (the new 1701, not your rendering) -- rather, it's like taking your wife or girlfriend to try on clothes, and she walks out of the dressing room with jeans that are too tight on one side and too loose on the other. She asks you, "Do these jeans make me look fat?" And because they're too tight, she's actually narrower than she would be otherwise, but it also produces these bulges...and you don't want to tell her about the bulges, because that'd insult her, and she doesn't normally bulge, and so on.

In other words, it's not quite balanced; and frankly, your rendering assumes it's more balanced than it actually is.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

I think his saucer is dead on. Looking at screen caps of the new trailer (where the E is warping away from the "starbase", and later where the E appears in a glowing blue "energy field") the saucer appears very wide, not effected by camera/lens distortions as in the infamous photo. You can also see how narrow the curved nacelle pylons are(from the front view), making the saucer look even wider.
The new ship does look good from many angles, but I'm afraid the iconic
end-of-each-episode rear view, where it fades into the distance, is gone. :( Sorry, I'm just being sentimental. :)
I still like the new ship, though...
Man I can't wait to see more of this!

I guess I'll whore this out here too. Technically, Madman is now my pimp.

Since this is just a sketch, and Hijacking Madman's thread is all the rage...

Anyway, this is not 100% accurate to every detail, but pretty close.

Thanks for all the tips, I will definitely go back and look again at some of these things.

The thing that bugs me the most the bottom of the Secondary Hull, and I had problems getting the shape even close to right, but that's because of my skill deficiencies.

I agree with Judxavier about the Saucer, I think it really is that big. It doesn't look right if it is any smaller, but that does make it look more like the original ship, which I have been trying to avoid, like you said, to fill in too many "blanks."

Seeing the trailer already made me scrap my old Nacelles and build new ones, which are a lot better. It's funny you say they are too long.. The are actually only a little longer than the previous ones I built, and they seemed to be too short. :)

About the pylons, in the side ortho they do exactly what you said, the main supporting part is straight, with the sides tapering.

example...

Thanks for thinking my render is more balanced than the real ship. I think the real thing looks alot better. :)

Hmm, on second thought, these Nacelles might be to big.

I ain't building them again. :)

Wow, first time I've ever been labeled a pimp. :)

Anyway, those are great! When did you draw them?

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

It's not like you needed a straight edge to draw it. ;)

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Here's a somewhat better version I just did.

Hmm, nice. I thought you had meant you drew these a while ago. :)

Working on the textures...

I know they don't match exactly...I can't get anything more subtle to show up. :) It just washes out.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Looking good, guys! MadMan, I know you don't want to hear this, but I think the warp engines taper a little so they have a smaller diameter at the end than near the orange globes. Also, I think the back is a little more steep from looking at the unfinished form in the trailer. Otherwise, both your and ancient's versions are great. Ancient's drawing seems to show that the new Enterprise is close to the original's proportions, interesting. Thanks for doing this. You both are doing an awesome job!!!

Re ancient: Now that's the way the ship should look! :D
Just a few more...

Err, not to diminish your work in any way. :p It's just that on Trekmovie, Ryan Church stated he pulled a lot of "ILM reference" of the original Enterprise when drafting the proportions of the new one, so having a model that matches the TOS ship in overly like ancient's is probably correct. (I hope.)

Funny, how a pencil sketch looks so much better than a publicity shot released by Paramount.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Madman, its actually coming along nicely.

Those nacelles are still waaaaay too big man, they need shortening and tapering.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

When you finish this great ship will you do the starbase you see in the trailer?

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Ancient ... I like that sketch better than the still Paramount put out. Did you use any other reference for it?

Yep. :) I am also going to re-build the Kelvin to match what We've seen.

I think I am going to work on shortening and tapering down the Nacelles before I texture them. That seems to be the consensus. :)
