The new DS9 -- photo gallery

I wish people would stop presuming everyone in the world uses that bloody awful rubbish facebook site...

I don't presume that; I just wasn't aware that you had to be a member to see the gallery. Sorry.

From the looks of it, they designed a docking arm specifically for the shape of Galaxy class ships. That seems... wasteful. How many Galaxy class ships are out there?

But understandable, since Andrew Probert designed both the Galaxy class and the new DS9.

Sure, it's understandable from the perspective that it's his baby and he can do what he wants with it. But in-universe, I would think that functionality would trump everything else, no? The station's life expectancy has to be longer than the life expectancy of the few Galaxy-class ships left in service, no?

The station has plenty of other docking ports to accommodate different classes of ship. And maybe that dock isn't exclusively for Galaxy-class ships, but is sort of a "multi-tool" design that can accommodate various classes.

I'd imagine it would be capable of docking various different ships just in different configurations. It looks the final docking arm configuration is a bit different from the "molded" configuration in Probert's sketches, with more flexibility. I do like how it can fit on top of the dorsal "spine" of a Galaxy, though. Presumably it would also do similar things with a Sovereign or Nebula or Ambassador.

Also, really love the DSRV design that's evidently now integrated into the station design. Essentially I'm guessing they use the main shuttle hangar as a major egress/ingress point for loading big payloads. I know Probert had something like that designed for the E-D when he first came up with it and wanted to use it for how the Enterprise would dock with spacedock on the exterior, right?

You're right. I looked more closely at the final renders and they don't match the sketches. That docking port doesn't mold itself to the Galaxy the way the sketch shows. It's just a longer "boom" in order to reach out to the upper decks of those bigger ships.

I love the fact that they've actually gotten people who worked on the shows, like Doug Drexler and Andy Probert. to actually come and design stuff like this for the books.

Wow, I love the new station design. For the non-Facebook people on here, 8of5 has a few of them on his site.
Thanks. For those who hadn't already noticed,

I.
Do.
NOT.
Do Facebook.

I could get even more vitriolic (and DO, when sent a political mass email that suggests I either like or share something on Facebook).

I by no means meant you, specifically, my good sir. ;)

It's just a pet-peeve of mine. Especially when websites do it. But also because it seems the whole of the internet is being assimilated by that particular monstrosity website. :wah: And the fact that you do need to log-in to be able to view some photos like that is just, to me, more evidence of how invasive said site is. :wtf:

No fault of yours though. ;)

The artwork is up to Doug Drexler's usual high standards, unfortunately I dislike the design immensely. I'll take the first DS9 any day of the week.

Actually it was mostly designed by Andrew Probert and rendered by Douglas E. Graves (aka "deg"), with Drexler working as the art director on the project, essentially. And I think DD created the book covers incorporating deg's model.

As for the design, I kinda like it. I look at those pictures and my first reaction is that it looks like DS9. It has the same basic shape and presence, as it were.

That design is just ugly.

The awful renders of it they slapped on the book covers don't help to make it look any better.

IIRC he was on a deadline for that Stargazer model. As far as I'm concerned he did an awesome job with it; certainly there are far worse things to gripe about when it comes to the various ships & stations etc.

Not the least of which, is DS9-II... Sorry gents but it could stand to see a few modifications before it nears anything resembling attractive, IMHO.
