The new Concordance (again) and ST: Of Gods and Men

If nothing else, this has proven to be a handy excuse to watch TAS again. Haven't had to rewatch much TOS so far, but since I haven't watched all of the animateds in a few years, some refresher training has been called for.

There's also a reference in the '95 edition to Sulu having been a communications officer (that I don't recall being substantiated by anything on-screen) that needs to be looked at.

Maybe that came out of the one bridge scene in "The Man Trap" where Sulu sat at communications while Uhura was at science.

I sat in a dump truck once. Doesn't make me a dump truck driver.

I was offering a possible explanation from where the incorrect assumption came from, not making excuses for it or validating it.

I'm getting questions about artwork, what's needed, where to submit, etc.

Let me save y'all a lot of time.

NOT YET!

We've got our hands full trying to put back the pieces we already have, it's too soon to be adding more. I've only managed in the last couple of days to put the lexicon all in one lump, and it still needs some heavy editing and cross checking. My poor laptop is about to melt from the strain.

I hope to be able to put out an official, general call for new artwork, with specifics of what subjects we're gonna need and where to send it, in a couple of months. 'Till then, just stay tuned.

I'm babysitting. She's got a lot of real life crap to deal with, so I've got the files. As soon as I've got them resorted into something coherent, she's gonna take a look at 'em and see where we stand.

So far, with placeholder artwork, it's looking like the lexicon is gonna run 300 pages. And that's before the updated entries.

Hey, CRA, how much of the work is going to involve updating entries based on new VFX information from the Remastered episodes (new ship types, registries, etc)? And will it incorporate TOS information from the later shows, such as "Trials and Tribbleations" and "In A Mirror Darkly"?

For now, I'm raising points like that, for the most part, in sidenotes. I don't see how the remastered episodes can be safely ignored, but again, not necessarily my call.

As for T&T, I don't see how that one can be ignored under any circumstances, since we've got the DS9 crew actually in "The Trouble With Tribbles".

And "In A Mirror, Darkly" essentially picks up right where "The Tholian Web" left off, at least as far as the Defiant goes, right down to the placement of the bodies on the bridge, as well as explaining why the ISS Enterprise is essentially identical as our Enterprise (although why they haven't made any improvements in over a hundred years is another question). I've already made an update along those lines to the entry on the Defiant, but since we're still talking about a MSWord document on my laptop, nothing is final.

Is there going to be any more behing the scenes/ first draft story kind of stuff? I enjoyed the little peeks we get in the Compendium, and always thought we deserved more. Like a ref to the cut scene from Elaan of Troyus, etc.

That sort of thing wasn't a part of previous editions of the Concordance. It did base a lot of information in its cast lists and Lexicon on production notes, but there wasn't any of the behind-the-scenes backstory like in the Compendium.

At the moment, I'm just worried about getting the text to line up with the onscreen stuff. Apparently, the editors did a real number on it, and Bjo didn't see the final result until the finished copy showed up on her doorstep, at which point it was too late to fix it. That being said, I think it's safe to say that a few bits can be slipped in here and there, where relevant.

Meanwhile, the lexicon is clocking in at around 300 pages, and is gonna have a helluva lot more artwork interspersed throughout than the last version. Figure around another hundred pages or so for the synopses, when I finally get around to those.

Will the new Concordance consider the remastered Star Trek as canon? Will the Woden resemble the SS Botany Bay or the new design? Will Antares from "Charlie X" be NCC-717 and still resemble the artwork drawn by Brian Pimenta from the second edition? Or will she be NCC-501? Will it consider the original shows as aired as the definitive versions?

At the moment, the text will be what has already been written for the previous editions, with corrections. Right now, I'm still working with notes and a lot of blank spaces and question marks.

The updated stuff will almost certainly come from Bjo, with my two cents' worth thrown on the side; whether she includes it or not is up to her.

As for the remastered versions, I'm thinking a little parallel record keeping will be in order in those cases where the remastered version differs from the original. In the case of the Antares, remember, we never saw that ship in the original episode, so in that case, the remastered depiction is pretty much automatically canon. In cases where there's been a change, like "The Ultimate Computer" where the reused footage of K-7 gets changed for the Vanguard station, there'll probably be a mention of both, with the edge going towards the newer version.

So, congrats, Dayton and Kevin, looks like you're gonna make it in the Concordance! :techman:

^ If Vanguard gets a mention, it should be Masao Okazaki who gets a nod. He's the one who designed the thing. It's also worth nothing that the station seen in the redone "Ultimate Computer" can't be the same model/class (Watchtower) as Vanguard, though it's an obvious variant; it's too small. :)

Details, details...oh, wait, that's the point of this book....

That does bring up a point, some of the assorted websites that have sprouted up and flourished since the last update. Ex Astra, Memory Alpha, etc. Should at least be worth a mention in the intro.

"Hey, kids, if you want to learn more about this, check out..."

What ever the final version, this Old Trek Geezer (thank you very much, Dennis) will definitely purchase two copies...

I have acquired at least two editions of every Trek reference book (including reprints) published in the last 40 some-odd years...

I've been in Trek Reference Withdrawal for several years now... Hurry Up!!!

(I'm drooling over the fact that Haynes is finally gonna put out the Enterprise Manual Edition this September... see my thread/posts about this in the Trek Tech section.)

I've been making more than a few mentions of the placeholder art I've been working with, and it's only fair that I be a little more clear on this matter.

Truth be told, all of it as placeholder art; Bjo is currently excavating her office to find all of the artwork from the previous versions, so I can go nuts with the scanner. As it is, I've scanned in my recently acquired copies of the original fan produced editions of the Concordance (the '68 and '73 supplement; I'm afraid of what I'd have to do to one of the '76 versions to get a good scan, but I've got two, so the one in the worst shape may end up having to make the ultimate sacrifice after all) and have been inserting that artwork into the text where appropriate and where an illustration is called for. For those instances where there isn't an appropriate picture, and there are plenty, I've had to get creative.

For the most part, the pattern has settled into this: For a device, I use a drawing of a spear...

Spear.jpg

...for an alien creature, a drawing of some of tribbles...

Tribbles01.jpg

...and for people, I've been using the following pic:
