The New Artist's Thread (Warning: Large Image Size)

My quick drawings of the three main villains from the recent sci-fi novel Surface Detail (Iain M. Banks):

Made a new painting today, it's quite small (3x5 inches) and still wet, so not the best picture ever. I'm thinking of trying to capitalize on my Native American half, and selling "(semi)Traditional Native American arts and crafts." Anyway:

Reminds me of the painting I use to see when I lived-in Alaska. Very beautiful!

The colors used aren't all typically found in Pacific Northwest tribal art (or at least green isn't usually anywhere near so prevalent) but there are still enough stylistic elements present that that influence is quite clear.

I love it.

Thanks guys! I haven't painted much since last summer when I first started, so it's actually only my 8th painting to date. I'm really still learning.

Well, that's kind of what I'm going for -- traditional Indian art isn't done in oils either. I want to do it with my own style. I'm only semi Native American, after all (half) so my art will be only semi Native American too.

I did another tonight (it'll look better when it's dry, but that takes like two weeks), of the raven. I admit, he's a bit cheesy, but I had fun painting him!

Works for me. :techman: I do recall running across works by First Nations artists from British Columbia which still depict the traditional figures, stories and stylistic elements while at the same time incorporating non-traditional materials and techniques into the process of realization.

It's appropriate that Raven should have some fun in him. And he's carrying the sun in his beak!

I love both of those; I think it's great when contemporary artists use traditional styles either as an homage or an evolved technique; it's also always cool to see contemporary subject matter rendered in a historic style (like this). Personally, I find American Indian art and storytelling especially appealing. Great work, tsq. Do more! :D

^That's wonderful!

Indeed! It's a wonderful story, after all.

I've started another, though she's obviously not finished. I haven't decided what she's sitting on yet. I'm thinking of putting her on a little stool, so you can see her legs, because I don't want her to look like a quadruple amputee!

Okay, I'm no TSQ but I was unable to sleep tonight and all I had was a mechanical pencil, so I sketched this.

^^ Well done. Is that a real place, or did you make it up?

That's great. If you wanted it to be a little surreal, she could be sitting on a giant lily pad, with her legs half visible on the left to match the flow of the body art.

I'm not sure if this counts as art but here's kind of a goofy music video I made this weekend for a friend's band:

I finished her. I decided to opt for the less surreal and place her on a blanket. That's three paintings in as many days. Sometimes being bipolar does have its upsides!!!

Now, sticking with the Native American theme, I'm going to do a portrait of my sister.
