The New Artist's Thread (Warning: Large Image Size)

^You ask why Janeway has a chainsaw but not why Picard has a huge gun, Sisko has a mallet, Kirk is mid-skirmish, and Sam (captain something-or-other-I-never-watched-Enterprise) is preparing for fisticuffs?

i assumed it was Kirk in a fight from TOS, Picard was in First Contact and Sisko was holding a spoon and cooking. i thought you were taking the mick with the Archer/Sam pic.

so, yeah, the chainsaw really stood out.

All this art work is actually pretty good. I never knew there are that many artists on this forum.

I'm actually an artist myself... I like to cook really good food!

Reposted my self-portrait because my other upload was playing up:

And here's a smug looking bloke in a business suit:

your art is amazing TSQ, I'm jealous, I've never had talent like that, best I can do is not mangle the paintjobs on my wargaming minis

Ok, tips needed from people that can do this well please.

I'm halfway through an art course and need to come up with something totally fabulous for our 'exhibition'

Ted ~ your perspective is great, I struggled with mine.

I'm happy with sketching

and have fun with acrylics

But what I really want to do as my showpiece is a "Autumnal study" with Demeter being created from the falling leaves and poppies...
These are the sketches so far, and TSQ I was thinking of the leaves as eyes before I saw your stunning paintings but you made me realise it could come true. So...

with the falling leaves and in a field of poppies. Ivy and poppies for the crown and corn for her hair. The cloak will be full length, of autumn colours (gold/red/rust/green) and fall far behind, blending into the leaves on the ground. I'm going to use acrylics as I'm more comfortable with them.

Her face?

Should she hold her head a little higher? A little more Goddess like?

The Demeter sketches are just ideas at the moment but I would really appreciate any inspiration or advice. I have a couple of months but don't want to panic at the end.

And I want to create something different from the watercolours of harbours and the oil pastels of animals that everyone else will show.

I'd love to discuss the ideas with my tutor but I just want to shock her :)

Next on my list is just a sketch of a bird looking at a cat in a cage :)

Invites any critisism ~ harsh or constructive. :)

Thanks, Sephiroth. :)

K'Ehleyr, firstly, what a BIZARRE COINCIDENCE! I drew this today, before I saw your post:

You and I are on the same wavelength! Or perhaps there are just no more original ideas!

As for requested criticism: Your acrylics are stunning...the vibrancy of the colors, the color choice, everything is perfect and beautiful. As for the drawings, what kind of pencils are you using? Do you use a variety of numbers? I ask because, while your shading technique is lovely, your drawings are all very light--I think they could benefit from some more contrast. You could accomplish that by getting some B pencils...It looks to me as if you're using something in the H range. Adding some Bs (maybe a B1, B4, and B6) would give your pencil drawings a much bolder look, and also allow you more options for shading.

TSQ, thank you:) I showed Son your paintings and he was stunned and now wants me to paint birds too, but I fear the competition would be too high :)

I got the idea of objects created into faces from the book "Fantastic Art" by David Larkin, if you are not aware of him already I'm sure you would love him, here's one link http://secretlexicon.blogspot.com/2011/07/fantastic-art.html

I am using B pencils ~ up to 6!, maybe it's lost in contrast or maybe I'm still a little scared.

TSQ, you know that I will be asking your advice for the next couple of months now :)

ETA: What medium did you use to draw that ~ it's so beautiful.

also edited to add: David Larkin was just the editor of the book, I can't remember the names of the artists who created faces out of furry animals and fish, but it got me thinking :D

^Thanks. :) That's just ballpoint pen and sharpie. I think what you said about being a little scared might be what I'm seeing...everything is just so light! Have you thought about giving pens a go? Not for finished products, but perhaps as an exercise. When I first started drawing in ink I found it incredibly freeing. Once one gets over the fear of making a mistake, and over the idea that everything has to be perfect, I think one's art improves exponentially...that's what happened with me, at least!

Oh I will try pen and ink. I still have to get the confidence with eye/brain/hand/paper co-ordination ~ but practice is working. I do prefer strong mediums ~ bloody watercolours are hopeless, by the time I've corrected my mistakes the whole house is swimming in a sludgy brown colour

And I'm so going to steal your profile for Demeter! I cannot get it right.

Are you left handed? Because I'm right handed and cannot draw from the left. I have to turn the paper over ~ is this weird or just the way your arm works?

Also I usually have to have the paper at 45 degrees...

Sorry, I'm wittering ~ it's way past my 2am bedtime and I have to be at work tomorrow to smile, offer coffee and mince pies at golfers that want their clubs re-gripped.

I would really rather stay in and do this...

Right ~ I'm going to become a starving artist! Man, Son and Sir Squeak (the Cat) can support me.

Ted that's great. I need to learn how to paint in stages rather than be impatient ~ I'm sure it will come to me. I love the way the T Rex really seems to be moving :)

I've always disliked using watercolors as well. As a kid I mostly used pencils...just regular school pencils. We were very poor so I rarely got the opportunity to use good art supplies. I never took art classes either, so my experience with different mediums has been relatively limited compared to some people. It wasn't until my junior year of college that I discovered pencils of different weights! I also started painting only last year, so I have a lot to learn about it. It comes pretty naturally to me, though. Art is the one thing in my life I feel that way about...the one thing I didn't have to learn or practice, but could always just do.

Hey! Stealing's not allowed! Although, that said, if it's for educational purposes... :)

I'm not really sure what you mean by drawing from the left...I'm right handed.

Also I usually have to have the paper at 45 degrees...
When I paint (and I'm jealous of your easel, Ted, I prop my canvass up on a cardboard box with and use a piece of wood I found on the street wrapped in wax paper as my palette!) anyway, when I paint I often contort myself into the strangest positions since I can't very well set the canvass on its edge!

Right ~ I'm going to become a starving artist! Man, Son and Sir Squeak (the Cat) can support me.
As long as you have the support! I'm a genuine starving artist--literally, I've eaten only beans for a week!

Thank you. And it's all mostly come out of my head (though I studied a toy model and a copy of Walking With Dinosaurs to make my T-Rex look right).

I've also edited my T-Rex pictures so they won't distort this thread page.
