The Never Ending Sacrifice

Bec

Commander
Red Shirt
I asked this question in the Fearful Symmetry review thread and no one picked up on it so I thought I'd post it here - Do we know if this novel is set in Cardassia of the DS9-R timeline or if it is set sometime in the DS9 past?

I only ask because I noticed several mentions of The Never Ending Sacrifice in Fearful Symmetry and it turns out it's quite a popular book in Cardassia. I assume that could just be a tongue in cheek promotion technique though.

And what do we know about this book, besides that it revolves around Cardassia and Una McCormack's writing it? Or is that all we know? ;)

Garak first mentioned it onscreen, contrasting it with Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. It's a cyclical epic about each generation of a Cardassian family giving of themselves to the Union in turn.

And we were told that McCormack's book would advance the DS9-R, so at the very least part of it must be 'present day' in the relaunch.

It actually begins in Season 2 of Deep Space Nine, and continues through the current post-TV novels, moving some months beyond Fearful Symmetry and The Soul Key.

It's really just a happy coincidence. The references to TNES (which was first mentioned in DS9's "The Wire") in Fearful Symmetry predate the decision by Una to title her novel The Never Ending Sacrifice.

What I can tell you at this stage is that the decision to begin the story in Season 2 is not a random one, and that readers will learn for the first time what it was like to be on the ground on Cardassia in the years before, during, and after the Klingon invasion, the destruction of the Obsidian Order, the rise of Dukat as Union leader under the Dominion, the Dominion War itself, and the postwar years--all from the perspective of someone who isn't Garak.

Now you know more about the book than most people do at this point. :)

My only question is: why is Never Ending two words? Shouldn't it grammatically be Neverending or Never-ending?

Thanks for the info Marco. This sounds like one of those many years epic books like Art Of The Impossible, Articles Of Federation and Terok Nor. I love those.

A quirk of Cardassian grammar.

Or bad translation. That's what happens when you let the Universal Translator do all the work. ;)

Seriously, though, this sounds quite promising. Are we going to know the character who's followed through this, or is this someone entirely new?

Sounds excellent. I've wanted to know more about what happened on Cardassia when the Dominion arrived. We heard in "Ties of Blood and Water" that the Chief Archon tried to resist the takeover - by law or force?

Wow, I'm all the more excited about this book. Ever since reading A Stitch in Time, I've been fascinated with Cardassian culture and this book looks like it'll go a long way (along with the Terok Nor trilogy which I'm still consuming) to satisfy my hunger to learn more about them.

Interesting Idea to name a "real" novel after a fictional novel. But of course that raises the question of when we can expect KRADs "Burning Hearts of Qo'noS" and Sherman/Shwartzs "Vulcan Love Slave"....? :p

This sounds really interesting. 2009 looks very exciting with these new types of books appearing with non standard focus: Seven Deadly Sins, KRAD's Singular Destinty which features a new character and this book with a non-Garak Cardassian perspective. Dare I ask if its an original or known character or shall I get an enigmatic answer?
