The never-ending sacrifice and 1984

implies that there's some biological factor that causes one person to be fervent about some belief (whatever that may be) and one person to not be fervent about any belief.

There might be. "The God Gene," anyone?

"Might be" is still a pretty broad claim; I'm pretty sure nearly all geneticists and molecular biologists would say that the "god gene" theory is bunk. :p

And even if the claims were true, the "god gene" would be nothing more than a predisposition towards spiritualism. That's far different from saying that there's a genetic factor that makes someone predisposed towards general fervency and it would just take environment to determine what the fervency was directed towards. What I was saying was that it was akin to saying there was a factor that would guarantee that a given person would be fervent about some belief, whether it be religion, atheism, liberal beliefs, conservative beliefs, vanilla, chocolate, whatever. That there would be some test you could perform where a positive result would guarantee that when they grew up, there would be something they would very strongly believe in, whatever that may be. Which is obviously silly.
