The Need Of The Many

Nedersong

Captain
The Needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

While it's a popular saying I can see how it can easily be abused. And here's how.

First of all, people have a thing called inalienable rights. The right to freedom of expression. The right to own a firearm. The right of religion. The right of association. So on and so forth.

Most people do not value these rights. What most people value is conformity. People just can not agree on what to conform too. This is a world that does not tolerate uniqueness. Those who are unique are often stomped on and washed out to become social pariahs.

The other way is that if the needs of the many outweight the needs of the few then there can be no protection of rights. People will always act to protect their own self interests, often to the detriment of others who do not share their view. We revert to mob rule and those who can not protect themselves have nowhere to go and will be stomped on.

The phrase ahs always bothered me because it does not seem to recognise that people, individual people, do have rights to things like due process and the like. Sometimes mere accusations ahve destroyed people's lives. Think of it like this, if you(general not specific) were accused of child molestation, wouldn't you want the chance to prove your innocence? In a world where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one, if most people considered you guilty you'd be guilty. Because they needed you to be guilty.

It's a bothersome phrase. When you consider how it can be abused, then it is not logical at all.
