The nature of Captain Thomas Hollaway in "Tapestry?"

Anyone else kind of curious about the guy who was captain for maybe 30 minutes to a hour? We know he couldn't exist in the universe before the episode because by making him the ship's Captain would be a alteration which is what Picard wouldn't agree to do when Q offered him a chance to change his life.

To me this means he must have been created out of nothing much like Dawn on "Buffy" and the universe was kind of papered over with false memories to make room for him. Which makes you wonder if his personality was designed to be similiar to Picard to help maintain some consistency and I wonder if people have memories off him being assimilated by the Borg, getting tortured by Gul Madred , having a romance with Vash and so forth.

Which sounds kind of cruel when you think about it. To be created and given life and have it erased like it never happened after what couldn't have even been a whole day. My other theory which is a little less cruel is that Q just created a double of himself and took on the role as a kind tether to keep the universe from changing to much from how it had been.

My third theory is Picard never did return to the 24th century and it was a illusion created by Picard as a example of what life would sort of be like if he didn't do what he had did the first time. The entire past could have been that as well because it makes me wonder if Picard now has a ruined friendship with his friend he slepth with, even though he never did that the first time around. Seems like all that changed from Picard's trip back in the past a second time was the fight in the bar played out in a similiar but not exactly the same way it did the first time around.

Q would not have played with Hollaway, like he did with Picard, since Q would know that this time line was temporary, therefore this was a Federation that had yet to encounter the Borg, and Riker still didn't take his own command.

Maybe in the standard timeline Holloway is captain of another Galaxy-class ship? He could have even been the second choice to command the E-D if Picard hadn't taken command.

After all his time travel, it's possible that Star fleet Command may have known that Jean-Luc was destined to Captain the Enterprise and was aware that the timeline would blow up if he didn't.

That's possible but those changes you think would create a very different timeline. In fact it seems very suspect that some of the exact changes would happen in this timeline like it does in the real timeline. Things like LaForge going from pilot to chief engineer or Yar being killed and replaced as head of security by Worf. Even RIker being first officer might not happen since he was personally picked by Picard. Who knows if Jack Crusher is still alive.

Yes but if that is the case then it means the ship he currently commanded in the standard timeline would also be changed because it would no longer have Holloway as captain. If you change Picard's life in the typical time travel fashion it means it effects many more people than just Picard. Granted it's possible that Q's promise was more along the lines that nobody would be dead that shouldn't be dead because of the change but I don't see how you could create a situation were everyone who is having a happy life would still have one in this kind of massive change. Maybe Holloway was in love with someone in the standard timeline that he encountered on his ship and he doesn't meet that person while in command of the Enterprise.

Picard made Q promise that the universe wouldn't change, just his own life.

But Picard is part of the universe. He impacts people so you change him you change his impact on the lives he has helped or even hurt. So everyone who has ever meet Picard will be altered. Some for the better, possibly but some for the worst as well.

Maybe Q put Picard into a timeline where for a day the crew decided to play a practical joke on him by dressing him in a different uniform and acting as though he wasn't captain? :p

That's possible! We never do see this other captain.

It was just one of the alternate time lines.
Like with Worf.
I think we all have alternate time lines.
(Key eerie music )
