The National Rugby League Thread

^ LOL. Currently listening to ABC Grandstand. Waiting to hear the game. Should be starting in 30 minutes or so. Shall be interesting, as our form isn't that bad over the past month.

Started not bad for the Raiders. Putting the pressure on the Eels...as I type Willliams just scored.

6 - 0. I wonder if I can call and get the game to stop right now...

^ That is evil. Now 12 nil. :( Need some ball. Canberra is a very hard road trip, especially when it's cold like it is there.

HT: 14 - 0, but as the ABC commentator pointed out (can't remember it exactly but it was about dog handlers or something) the Raiders have fallen apart in the second half and let go of good leads.

They also talked about both teams having the weakest attack. But I'm happy that Eels are on the board, with what sounds like a soft try. Another would be great.

Raiders struck back quickly, but I wonder what the stats are with the Raiders and conceding the first try of the 2nd half.

Edit: 25 - 12 to the Raiders. An own goal! Now, a soccer try! This game has gone crazy.

Ugly victory with a lot of luck to seal it, but when you're at the foot of the ladder you'll take them anyway you can. Glad the Titans (for the battle of the wooden spoon) lost as they have a bye still to come, but our for and against is at least getting better.

Not good news about Shillington. You know you're having a bad season with injuries when three of your starting 13 are from the under 20s, though 1 isn't strictly necessary to start.

What do you think of the field goal rule? I don't have an issue with it...but it favoured my side.

As an American, I have to say that your Rugby league is the closest thing that I've seen to our football. As I result, ive been entertained by your Origin series. Wish that we got to see more here in the states!

An unusual decision. The Eels 3/4 is a lot weaker at the moment than last year, but impressed with Loko and Morgan. Not sure when Reddy returns. I think one of these players will move to the wing, so Reddy will resume his centre position.

Awesome. Not sure about any more NRL games to be played there in the future. I remember hearing about taking an Origin match to USA. Most likely a 4th match (normally it's a three match series).

Russell Crowe (who owns South Sydney Rabbitohs) has taken his team to play some games in Jacksonville a few years. I know there is an American Rugby League contest, that runs when the American Football isn't being played.

Sorry for the double post ... but slightly disappoiinted with tjje Eels' performance tonight. The attack was rather crap. Am looking forward to next year, with Sandow and Roberts coming to the club. But was impressed by the return of Reni Maturi (or however his name is spelt). Too lazy to check. Really missed Hayne and Mannnah.

Thinking about going to Penrith in 2 weeks to see Hindmarsh play jhis 300th game. A chamption of the game. First Eel to also mark this mile stone.

(continues to get drunk as I forget about tonight's game)

That was a terrible attempt at tackle by McGuire to allow Gillett to score the match winner. Given how livid Hindmarsh was after the siren I wouldn't want to have been him in the sheds after the game...

Raiders don't play until Monday, hoping that they can run over a deleted Roosters with a misfiring Carney. Only person they will be missing is Shillo from last week.

^ So true about Hindy. he didn't seemed pleased. he will be remember as one of te Eels great forwards up there with Ray Price, Bob O'Reilly and Dick Thornett. Heck, if there was a team of greatest Eels players, Nathan would replace either Thornett or Peter Wynn.

If Raiders are home are at ome, they sould win. But Roosters have been very disappointing. Saw someting about wsackning Smith today.

^ It's at the SFS and there is some crazy stat about the Raiders not winning there against the Roosters since the mid-90s.

I think it was last week that the Rooster's chairman was on either The Game Plan or One Week at a Time and he said Smith's job was save. On the other hand the big boss coming out and saying your job is fine is often quickly followed by the boot...sometimes you have to wonder who would want to be a coach?

Good win over the Roosters, 38 - 12. There are few teams I really enjoy beating, one is the Broncos (byproduct of living south of the border) and the other is the Roosters due to the number of good players that the Raiders bring up and the Roosters poach. I know its part of the system with the salary cap and the fact that the Raiders can't compete in terms of 3rd party and extras as the Roosters can since Canberra is...well, Canberra.

Watched the HL and the Rooster's on line defence was terrible. The Raiders score two or three tries despite been involved in tackles with multiple Roosters. The Rooster's two tries are great. One pure vision and exploitation, the other just nice hands, positioning for a long range try.

The Raiders horror injury run continues with Lahrs gone again, possibly out for the season. Pre-season I'd doubted the worth of signing Brett White but with the frequent injuries to Shillo and Lahrs I'm glad he is there. With a bad season so far it is hard to impress, but White has put in a lot of effort with little recognition.

After 25 min in game 3 and I'm calling this game gone for NSW. Even if they managed to get back the defence they have had to do will see them blown away in the final 5-10 minutes, much like in game 1.

It's cliched but its clear QLD want this far more than NSW.

22-0 in 33min. This is pathetic.

Edit: 24 - 10 at HT. One fluky try and luck going to NSW. I'm not convinced that the ball wasn't thrown into a QLD when NSW got 6 again to score the try at the stroke of half time. NSW has done 90 more tackles, close to double that of QLD...I'm going to stand by my earlier statement that NSW will get blown away in the final 10.

Queensland deserve to be winning at the moment, with the amount of ball they have at the moment. The game ain't over if NSW scores first.

Did you just see Thurston's injury...ouch. A leg should not bend that way.. I wouldn't be surprised if he's going to be gone from the NRL for some time.

Still no points. If they don't score before the 65th the game will be gone. There is no chance this QLD side, with the possession they have had will leak 14+ points in the final 10.

Slater and Inglis have scored. Hayne has brought one back, but the game is gone. 8 point try, the second in Origin history I believe, both have gone to NSW.

You have got to be kidding, I think it was Gidley who threw a stupid intercept pass in NSW 10 and QLD nearly get another try. If this was Union that would be a try.

34 - 22. This scoreline flatters NSW who have been thoroughly dominated.

Edit: Some slightly drunk ramblings. I think Stuart might have a bitch about the refs allowing QLD to slow down NSW ball. I don't think I've seen as many players get "tangled" or having a lie down on the wrong side of the ruck as QLD during the 1st half and half of the second half. Particularly in the second half it hampered NSW from getting back into the game. I find it hard to believe that every single instance was innocent, I think it was a bit of cynical play and if the refs don't call it up there is no reason why they should stop.

Stuart will say NSW made progress and in the sense that they won 1 more game than left year he's right. But they are still in pretty much the same spot they have been for the last 6 years, incapable of being competitive for 3 full games in a single series. QLD has only had 1 whitewash, but have competed in just about every single game over that period.

They are saying JT might be out for the season. If I was a Cowboy's fan I'd be seriously worried that despite sitting at 4th at the moment that the team might not make the cut in 2 months time given the Cowboy's inability to win without JT.

Quite happy with the Eels winning tonight. Didn't watch the game, as my reception was being super sucky. It will be interesting to see if Hayne stays at 5/8 next week. Could be a great, only time will tell. But also heard that Willie Tonga is returning back to the Eels next year

Tigers were pretty ordinary, makes you wonder if things are a bad as they are rumoured to be over there. The Titans were also poor. It says a lot that they had to call in Matt Rogers out of retirement. Not that he did much, but you can't retire and come straight back in and expect things to flow.

Looking forward to the Sharks vs Raiders this evening. Both teams have shown a bit of decent form in the last few weeks so it might be a decent and close game.

Edit: 26 - 12 with 10 mins left, but the game is over. The Raiders have decided to return to their inept best and have just produced, error after error. If this was against the Storm or Dragons the score would be 50 - 0. All I can say is thank god for the Titans, they might be the only thing that save the Raiders from the wooden spoon.

Another injury (though it may not be serious)...they're not playing well, but the injury toll that has been piled on is just unkind by the Footy Gods.

Heard the Shark fans were throwing drinks at Ferguson as he left the field. They've been giving it to him all night and that's fine. He left and was brutally honest about why he left, he didn't think the Sharks would win a title and that he felt the Raiders had a better chance. That's going to upset people and he would know he would get it from the Shark players and team, but throwing drinks at a player is a bit much. Just like earlier in the season when a Raiders fan/s keyed Orford's car during the 8 game losing streak. Some fans need to have a good look at themselves.

Glad the Union international season is about to start so I can divest myself from the NRL guilt free...that is as long as the Wallabies go well, if not I'm going to be looking for a nice high bridge...or switch to following netball. :p
