The nacelles really do it for me. You?

After seeing the various angles of the new Enterprise, is anyone else in agreement that the radical departure from the original nacelles is an improvement?

Those babies look like they could carry the saucer and engineering sections and go - *BANG*! - Off we go at warp 9.whatever.

Yes?

Yeah, I'm digging the new nacelles in the toy photo. It's interesting that this new ship actually has less surface detail; than the original--no intercoolers, no inside warp grill, fewer windows, etc.

What I've seen in this toy image has certainly improved my opinion on them. But it's a toy so one can never be sure of its accuracy.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they look on the big screen in May.;)

Well even better than a plastic toy I hope.

I think they've done a superlative job in recreating the spirit of the ship as was presented in the 60's, but it's update is entirely appropriate and considerate of the original. Far more than what I thought they might've tried when XI was first announced.

I agree.

By the way I believe the picture in your first post was just the earlier prototype and the picture I posted is the final toy version. That's why wizard removed all these images from their site :)
There's an article on Trekmovie about it.

well, i guess i'm in the minority here but i absolutly hate them! they are just too big and bulky and destroy any graceful lines that this design might have had.:(

The pic attached in the original pic isn't the real Enterprise though, or at least not the main one used in the film.

The second pic attached, with the massive nacelles is the actual one. And I love them

Just going by the picture in the first post.

Its a very nice design but perhaps a bit large.
They look like they will bugger off on their own and leave the rest of the ship behind.

I've nothing against beefier nacelles conceptually, but I don't find the way it's been done here particularly appealing, they don't seem to fit with the rest of the ship. Madkoifish's design is still the best update to the original I've seen, but I can live with this one.

The interiors, OTOH...

I love em, they actually loos like they could be engines instead of just tubes
at the end of pencils. This Enterprise looks far sturdier and the nacelles have
alot more character.

Yeah I like them. A nice combination of 50s "Jet Age" cars and clean looks. Strangely, it's the saucer that seems to stand out as being a bit 'conservative', if you know what I mean.

But yeah, I need more angles and movement to truely make up my mind. The released image from the actual ship seems to be a rather unfair angle, because the brief shots from the trailer already look a lot better (especially the 'head on' view of the ship going to warp).

^^^ That's exactly it. I think that 50's flair has been missing from scifi for
far too long, I welcome it back. :)

I think going with a bit of a 50s look could be a good idea as it makes people subconciously feel like it's before the 60s, when TOS came out....and this movie is a prequel to TOS.

The funny thing is that they seemed to stop redesigning the ship with the nacelles and the secondary hull....they didn't bother changing the saucer from the movie era.

Actually if you look closely it looks like the new saucer has slightly upturned edges...
more sobrero like than the movie era refit...

I'd agree with that thought and extend it to what I've seen of the whole project. It goes without saying that you are going to have to update a TV show last seen in the 60's but I've been stunned by how the designs, uniforms etc have still managed to capture TOS. Likewise I'm delighted that we are getting a movie that follows on from the existing continuity. When this movie was first announced I feared it would be a complete remake. At the time Trek seemed dead and buried so I would have reluctantly accepted that as a means to seeing new trek but the fact that we are not getting a reboot (at least not in the BSG sense) has left me with a sense of excitement about seing a film that I've not had since I was a child.

They are a radical departure.

That's one view.
