The mystery of Jose's peppers...

The comment earlier asking about Dominguez growing his own peppers reminded me of the pilot movie of Babylon 5, "The Gathering" and the later series.

In "The Gathering" Lt. Cmdr. Laurel Takashima, B5's XO, has a little coffee plant that she grows and gets a little bit of real coffee out of. The actress, Tamlyn Tomita, was not on the series. She, and her character, were replaced by a new XO, Lt. Cmdr. Susan Ivanova played by Claudia Christian. In one scene Ivanova comments about inheriting the coffee plant.

So I keep picturing Jose leaving behind his pepper plant for the next Starbase commander.

Is this before or after Holt learned to appreciate Boyle's food methods when trying to cook something special for Kevin?
I don't remember. I loved B99, but I haven't been through the entire show more than once, so I don't have the chronology of the series internalized the same way I do TOS.

Before. Plus, given how particular about textures and order Captain Holt is, I would imagine that Holt would follow Boyle's blog out of personal information curiosity and statistical analysis, which he loves.

Alien biology can be quite unpredictable; it is conceivable that peppers are an aphrodisiac for Tellarites or catnip for Andorians. Just how remote was that Starbase, anyhow? Maybe Dominguez would occasionally put on the ritz for visitors.

Fiction has to sell (literally or figuratively); therefore, more often than not, fiction has to make sense. Reality, on the other hand...reality could really do with some halfway-competent editors.

Put another way:

"Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn't."
-- Mark Twain, in Following the Equator

I'm not sure Twain could avoid being savaged in this particular decade.
He claimed to fear that exact thing when he decided to have his autobiography released in three volumes 25 years apart, starting a hundred years after his death.

That ended up being ignored after it was decided it was more likely to be a ploy to extend the copyright for his heirs than that his opinions were scrupulously divided between ones that would take a hundred years to a hundred-fifty years to become uncontroversial.

Besides writing “The Man Trap,” George wrote episodes of the Twilight Zone, Kung Fu, many other TV shows, and co-authored the novel Logan’s Run. He was a 40-year-old hippie. Not at all what I thought a successful writer would be like. I learned a lot from him.

For one thing, he always fought to keep the networks, who answered to their sponsors, from cutting things out of his scripts he thought were important. In this episode in question, he convinced them to leave in a mention of the demise of the North American Bison after the salt-sucking monster--the last of it’s kind--is killed.

That and Kirk’s extended statement changed my mind about the intent of the line? Sequence? It’s short, almost a throw away . . .

...

It would also be horrifying to be trapped in part of the galaxy with no access to chili.

...

it's the only mention of Mexicans or Mexican culture in Star Trek. Cutting it would obliterate the entire Lationoid Continuum from the universe. Which would be too bad, because its existence brings up some interesting possibilities.

...

It also shows a side of Kirk and the Federation that there was precious little of. Did parts of La Cultura exist in their universe? Why would the Corinth Starship Base be commanded by a Mexican while the rest of the Federation is run by white-haired white men?

Also Dominguez seems to be Kirk's good friend. Why else would hand-picking chili peppers be a job for a starship captain?

That's interesting, but the guy forgot about Commodore Mendez and that smoldering Latino, José Tyler. And arguably Khan, who looked and sounded a lot like Ricardo Montalban. Also, Marlena Moreau has some Spanish in her.

Don't forget Esteban Rodriguez in Shore Leave. He's a much more obvious person of Spanish type decent than trying to make Khan the character match the actor playing him.

Clearly the writer needs to watch more Star Trek...

Don't forget Spock confirmed Khan's identity later. Since he didn't say "oh snap he's Mexican" I would say she was on the money.
We learn his name, and that he was a "ruthless dictator" who was "absolute ruler of more than a quarter of your world. From Asia through the Middle East."

While "Singh" does strongly suggest Sikh, "Khan"--whether as name or as title--does not belong to India at all, and "Noonien" is at best of uncertain origin. We don't really know.

"Khan" was used as a title of nobility in the Mughal Empire, although it did not originate there. But if Khan Noonien Singh was indeed of Sikh origin as Marla McGivers guessed, then "Khan" as a name would be even more of a head-scratcher, since the Sikhs and Mughals were historically often at odds.

"A poor likeness, it must be said."

Khan likely used McGiver's fantasies to his advantage.
