Simple radio transmissions can be received still, but time is a factor. USS Horizon's message wasn't received by Starfleet for about a hundred years. USS Enterprise's subspace radio was many hours to weeks out of response time on the outer fringes of explored space, (depending on what subspace relay stations were in place).
