The musical score

Anyone having trouble finding the soundtrack? I've tried four stores and none have had it.

Could not find it in Aus either Donners22 and bought it on ebay from the US.

I would suggest JBHiFi as the most likely store to have it. Perhaps they've gotten it by now.

For me, the score was the most disappointing part of the film. The score of the opening scene was great: the initial horns until the triple-time part where the shuttles flee the Kelvin. (Incredible shot too, that). The way the diegetic sound shut off and just the scored played intercutting between Winona and George in the opening was powerful and haunting.

Nearly all of the rest was just uninspired. Uninspiring orchestration; uninspiring harmonies; uninspiring melodies; uninspiring scoring generally. (Sabotage and the Bar scene were the best of the rest, both not written by Giacchino though).

Most of the wildly popular blockbuster movies have had really memorable melodies, tunes and scores that stuck in your head. Men in Black, Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park - even Transformers had a catchy melody for that matter.

And it wasn't just the melody. It was just mis-scored. Too many scenes seemed too busy, with kind of tired, overdone orchestrations. I've heard them called "cue music" and I can't disagree.

I have to blame Abrams for this, not Giacchino. His score of Up, in contrast to this, was lyrical and spare. I think Giacchino must have musical ability, as shown by the great moments he wrote in this score (from the opening until "Sabotage"). Somehow it didn't all come together.

The use of the beeping noise from TOS was great though.

Other than Star Trek:First Contact, this film had contemporary music (Beastie Boys, anyone? :) I thought that was pretty cool, the music made the movie more down-to-earth so-to-speak.

However, who thought the ending musical score from TOS was a great addition to the film? I was actually surprised to here it, I didn't think Abrams would go that far. I remember reading a comment on another thread that someone didn't care for it, but I thought it was a nice change!

I play cuts 5 and 14 all day in my car!!

Can you identify the music used in the Bar scene?

Cut 5, Enterprising Young Men, is excellent. I agree with you completely.

That's what's so weird here: Giacchino has the talent to make good tracks, he just seems to have lost interest, or for some reason Abrams chose to use mediocre tracks in the scoring.

But except for maybe three, or at most four, tracks on the soundtrack, the rest of it is almost unlistenable.

The goldsmith Trek theme played shortly before the end credits with the boldly going speech.

I didn't enjoy the soundtrack when I first listened to it by itself (and this was before I saw the film). I will say that the music has grown on me quite a bit. The main theme of the film still isn't spectacular - it isn't profound and emotional enough for me, but it does a decent job. Its arrangement in "Enterprising Young Men" is very good, in fact. I really liked some of the more emotional music. The piece "Labor of Love" is fantastic, especially when played during the film with the drama. A very moving sequence. There are a few other bits of score that didn't make it onto the soundtrack. I can't remember what they were (it's been several weeks since I've seen the film).

This score isn't Giacchino's best work. I think some of his music on "Lost" has been absolutely fantastic. But I don't think he did a poor job with Trek. I hope he returns for the next film, and gives us something more memorable, though.

I meant here the music played at the start of the bar scene. Supposedly it's called "Awasoruk Jam" credited to "Cyrano Jones" and is not available either on the soundtrack or anywhere else.

I love the soundtrack...I do agree about the main theme though, its kind of annoying how much it appears throughout the score. Is it the same piece of music that was on the official website before the movie because if it is then I called it first that it would be the theme music, everyone seemed to disagree with me. I don't think this is my favourite soundtrack out of the franchise series...that belongs to Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan followed by The Undiscovered Country.

Ironically, though I like Enterprising Young Men, it's far from my favorite use of the theme at this point. I think it's just that I've heard it too much - I find Enterprising Young Men just kind of standard and boring, while the other uses of the theme are far more interesting to me.

I found it rather mediocre. Nowhere near the music of TMP, TWOK, TVH or FC.

TFF reused the theme from TMP IIRC, but other that the other TOS films had their own individual scores. While it was nice to hear the original theme play over the end credits, it would have been nice for this film to have its own strong theme throughout. It needn't have been something bombastic, just something that identified it as it's own little chunk of Trek.

Really! Is that a reference to Cyrano Jones of Tribble fame you think? Or just a happy coincidence?

Seeing as how they were almost certainly written for the movie (as they're listed as being courtesy of Bad Robot Music), I'm guessing the former. :)

Tracks I liked:

-Labor of Love
-Hella Bar Talk
-Enterprising Young Men
-That New Car Smell
-End Credits (+ To Boldly Go)

I found a few things in Does It Still McFly? interesting as well.

I just downloaded it from iTunes. Labor of Love just makes me want to cry every time I hear it. It really is perfect.

Enterprising Young Men just came on!
