The musical score

Other than Star Trek:First Contact, this film had contemporary music (Beastie Boys, anyone? :) I thought that was pretty cool, the music made the movie more down-to-earth so-to-speak.

However, who thought the ending musical score from TOS was a great addition to the film? I was actually surprised to here it, I didn't think Abrams would go that far. I remember reading a comment on another thread that someone didn't care for it, but I thought it was a nice change!

I think the film's original music was generally quite good. The music for the opening title and reveal of the Enterprise worked well.

Didn't care much for the contempoary music and the TOS music was unnecessary as far as I was concerned.

The "modern" music was ok (as JJ pointed out, the radio station was listed as an "oldies" station).

Michael's original music was pretty good, but he leans on his original Main Theme too much. It pops up at LEAST a dozen times, and is often presented EXACTLY the same way, right down to the orchestration.

The TOS theme at the end (including the monologue) had me in tears...there was NO other way that film should have ended. I liked the "homage" to the series closing credits too (with all the planets).

The end title music was really good. The new Trek theme for this movie is alright, but nothing can top the Jerry Goldsmith Main Theme.

This.

I hope Trek XII uses that theme, if only for the closing credits. That theme simply IS Trek. I don't care that it was first used in TMP, ten years after the end of the show. It sounds the most Trekkish of any of them.

That being said, I wish the music from the second preview of Trek XI had been used in the film. Didn't much care for the fact that they used music in the preview that wasn't in the film. Plus, that music was cool as well.

Enterprising Young Men (Enterprise reveal), the title score and the various uses of the same theme throughout the film were all wonderful, epic in scope and make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

But apart from that one same theme I thought the score was mostly forgetful to be honest.

I think it's been overused. That said, I love the Overture and other pieces from the TMP soundtrack. The soundtrack to the new movie was OK, and the TOS homage at the end was great (that the the space scenes that were to me very evocative of 60s-era scifi).

Agreed, a little too vanilla, surprising from this accomplished composer.

Could have used a few more musical nods from the original series, too, which had VERY distinctive music.

What I do hope is that they stick with this new Trek theme for the sequels. Obviously expand on the soundtrack and keep the TOS theme for the end credits etc, but I'd like this new tune to be synonymous with JJ Trek.

I've always thought that theme was a little overdone for Star Trek, kind of a John Williams Star Wars theme wannabe, but that's just my take.

Also, a score like that wouldn't have worked in this movie. Imagine the scene with the Kelvin ending, and the title card is shown to music that evokes Goldsmith's bombastic theme. As is, the movie's short and moving score was perfect given what had just happened.

Yep that makes sense

What I wondered is if the repetition of the short main theme is a trend in action movies.

I had the sound track to STIII back in the day, and I recorded the Klingon tunes back to back on a 90-minute tape and played them for weeks. I guess I did have a touch of obsession.

Yeah I think the Goldsmith theme needs to be retired. It's majestic, yes, but it's a bit... stately for to this incarnation of Trek. Also, it's now heavily identified with TNG, a connection which they would want to avoid.

As for the actual score, yes I loved it. Labor of Love, Enterprising Young Men, and Nero's theme all have very strong, emotional hooks. I will admit, there are a few times I find myself thinking of Lost, but I used to think all James Horner's sci-fi scores sounded like TWOK, so he's not alone there.

A lot of people have been gushing over the score, but aside from Enterprising Young Men and the end titles, I found it rather mediocre. Nowhere near the music of TMP, TWOK, TVH or FC.

Exactly. The GOOD scores, like Goldsmith, Williams, Horner, etc, I find myself listening to over and over.

Heck, Mik G's stuff on shows like Lost, Alias and The Incredibles are just as distinct.

The ST soundtrack seemed not to be nearly as distinct. Not wallpaper, but no catchy melodies.
