If Bear McCreary doesn't compose at least the pilot, I'll be very disappointed.
I think they'll have one. It's not needed since those intros were like overtures calling viewers to the TV in the old days. But now that we Trek fans plan our whole day around a new episode premiere, it's not required. I would guess shorter than 45 seconds though. Or maybe they could use the "Mission:Impossible/Space1999/BSG method and a show fast cut shots of scenes from the episode.I'm just hoping we actually have an opening theme and that its longer than 5 seconds. The TV theme is dying. I could never figure out why. After doing some research, the reason seems be to squeeze in more ads and fear that the viewer would " change the channel" (I think that's silly).
But since this show will streamed with allotted ad-breaks, and no-one would be "changing streams" after going through the trouble to subscribe, I'm hopeful Discovery will have a proper theme that is at least 45 seconds to a minute (my preference would be around 90 seconds). Bryan Fuller's recent comments about how music is important also has me feeling hopeful.
I thought that promo had an example of the music they liked for the show. Fuller said he liked (whoever it was) that did the music on the promo.
I want something retro. David Carbonara knows how to do this. So does Michael Giacchino, but he doesn't seem to be doing anything with television these days.
Big, bold, brassy and dynamic would be a nice change of pace from the bland mood music we got in much of televised modern Trek.

Me too. Fuller did make reference to the TOS music, specifically the classic fight song from Amok Time. I think he said that they intend to incorporate some stuff like that into the new music. I love Michael G's theme, my favorite since Goldsmith's TMP theme.I want something retro. David Carbonara knows how to do this. I, again, have to post this Horner interview where he discusses, rather surprisingly actually, the structure of his music in TWOK. I don't usually hear composers break it down like that. They usually stick to more of an emotional "I wanted it to give the impression of..." not going into the mechanics of it so much. So that was interesting... But i'd like to see that thinking come back into the music. Even good soundtracks these days feel very "just lay down some background stuff" and less about touching the emotionalism. I'd say that's actually one of the strength's of the JJ films.
