The Music of Discovery

Who would you like to take charge of the music department in Star Trek Discovery? Me personally, I'd love to have Michael Giacchino on board to compose for the show. He brings that classic brassy sound to his work that I think really suited well into his Trek scores.

I did not hate the theme for ENT, but I want it to go back toward its trek roots. No clue who should head it up, but it needs to be something that inspires, like say the DS9 or VOY theme.

Yes I too would prefer a new instrumental theme with a sense of wonder and adventure. Enterprise's theme was beyond awful. I'd prefer something fast and exciting like TOS's theme. A jaunty tune. Here's hoping Discovery delivers in that department. :)

I thought that promo had an example of the music they liked for the show. Fuller said he liked (whoever it was) that did the music on the promo.

Just no Dennis McCarthy please. He did fine with Trek from TNG to ENT. But let's get a new "voice" in the room.

Someone like Brian Reitzell, who is a very versatile musician and did the music for Hannibal, would be a blessing. As would Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones). But of course I'm hoping for some new talent, too. The music in the teaser was okay, if a bit generic. It's funny how people hear Klingon influences in there, even though it was merely music someone sent in as his demo tape, very likely with no prior hint as to what the series will actually be about.

It doesn't have to be Horner or Goldsmith, but I do hope it has power, intensity, emotion, and subtlety.

As much as I was a Beastie Boys fan growing up, I don't want anything like it in Trek. It needs to be orchestral with perhaps some electronic influences to simulate some of the classic TOS sound.

What do people think about a voice-over during the intro? Will it flat out not work if it does not come from the captain? I am half thinking they will start with the leads log in a way that simulates the opening voice over.

I loved the soundtrack for Stargate Universe. I'd love to see Discovery's music be along similar lines. I'm a bit tired of the same old orchestral Trek cues.

After the slowness of Deep Space Nine and Voyager's intro music I now want something faster like TOS and TNG's intro music.

I know he is talented but I found Michael Giachinno's 2009 score overpowering in a lot of places - like George Lucas said making Star Wars, I'm a believer that a soundtrack should be unnoticed by the audience at it's best.

Or maybe it's because the music sounded like it came straight out of Lost.

So, yeah, I would favor the guy from Hannibal, or Bear McReary, or the guy who did the trailer score - or indeed all of them. I also love me some metal, and electronic ambient music, and ethnic music - so Sitars, Synthesizers and Satan are all game :)

In fact every episode should open with the Discovery leaving the asteroid to the sound of Deep Purple, Smoke on the Water.

EDIT:

A lot of people have miscontrued this post, so just to clear things up: I do not advocate musical wallpaper - George Lucas's meaning in his interview was not that John Williams was un-memorable - he basically meant "there's a big difference between elevating the drama and distracting the viewer", to quote another forum member.

I disagree. For me, Good music is a character in the film or show, what have you. I don't think anyone could say John Williams's music was unnoticeable. In fact it was always noticeable in a good way. ST09's music was a bit repetitive yes, but Giacchino Improved with Into Darkness and Beyond as he had more themes to work with. I don't think music should be tuned out to wallpaper. If the music is truly good and fits the scene it should be there. And it should be memorable.
