The Muppets (2011)

I've felt for a long time that Kermit was getting increasingly marginalized in post-Henson Muppet productions. The emphasis in the movies and specials over the past couple of decades has been shifting increasingly away from the core of Kermit, Fozzie, and Piggy and more toward the favorite characters of the current lead Muppet performers -- Gonzo (Dave Goelz), Rizzo (Steve Whitmire), and that irritating prawn Pepe (Bill Barretta)

That's a pretty hilarious criticism of The Muppets, considering Gonzo had maybe a dozen lines in the film, Rizzo was only seen (and not heard, at all) in two shots and Pepe had one scene.

No, you just didn't pay attention. It was not a criticism of The Muppets -- it was a criticism of the Muppet productions of the past couple of decades prior to this one. If you'd actually read the entire paragraph I wrote instead of just the part of it you quoted, you'd know that. What I actually said is that this movie was the first time in a long time that Kermit, Fozzie and Piggy have been front and center again, so I was hoping it would reverse that trend; but I was sadly still disappointed with how Kermit was portrayed despite his renewed central position.

Next time, do yourself a favor and read someone's entire post before you mock it and make yourself look foolish in the process.

Man or a Muppet up for Best Original Song at the Oscars

http://social.entertainment.msn.com...spx?feat=6c3a8bb2-2365-4994-a9aa-0f14294b2603
Out of 39 songs that were eligible for the award, only two were deemed good enough to be contenders: Sergio Mendes’ “Real in Rio” from the animated “Rio” and Bret McKenzie’s “Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets.” That’s it. Even though there were three more potential slots, the Academy voters said no to songs by Mary J. Blige, Elton John, Pink, Glenn Close, Sinead O’Connor, Zooey Deschanel, Chris Cornell, and will.i.am, among others. (Golden Globe song winner Madonna had already been disqualified from Oscar contention because her song “Masterpiece” appears more than a minute into the credits of her film “W.E.”)

It actually surprises me that's the song that got nominated. I would have thought "Life's A Happy Song" to be the one they would push. Not that I'm complaining. It would be my personal pick, as well. Though a lot of what made that scene so memorable in the movie was Jim Parsons' completely unexpected cameo.

Well, "Man or Muppet" has a little more "depth" (for lack of another word), so I can see why that was chosen.

On the other hand, it's kind of awesome (and weird) to be able to say that Bret McKenzie is an Oscar nominee.

Okay, now, that's the assertive, confident Kermit I wanted to see in the movie.

Well, maybe we should take that as an indication that Kermit will be coming from a place of confidence and assertiveness in the next Muppet movie. :bolian:

Man, if the Muppet Show ever comes back, I'd love them to take on the format of satire news show, with Kermit and Piggy as news anchors.

No, I take it as an indication that the way Steve Whitmire ad-libs Kermit is different from the way Kermit ended up being written in the final draft of the film's shooting script. Since Whitmire probably won't be the screenwriter on the next movie, there's no reason to expect this to be predictive of that.

Well, Kermit has years of experience as a roving reporter for Sesame Street News, and he was the first reporter to set flipper on the planet Koozebane. So he's certainly got better journalistic credentials than anyone on Fox "News."

Yeah, seeing the video reminded me of that. Looked a bit like a news studio, so I think it would be a natural fit to his talents :)

Reporter Kermit was always one of my favourite segments on "Sesame Street" when I was a kid. Along with Ernie, they were my two favourite characters on the show.

Yeah, and I think he was considered a roving reporter if I'm not mistaken. In that case, being a co-anchor would be a promotion :)

Oops, I just realized Christopher already did mention the fact that he was roving.
