The Muppets (2011)

I was really suprised at the end of SNL when they showed the Muppets with the puppeteers. I had never seen that before and assumed it was a bit of a no-no pulling back the curtain on the illusion and all that.

It's happened very, very rarely. The only other time I can think of, off the top of my head, was at Jim Henson's memorial service.

^Well, not his actual memorial service, which I assume was private, but in the television special aired as a tribute to his life.

But there have also been behind-the-scenes specials that have revealed the puppeteers, notably an episode of The Jim Henson Hour.

Yeah I've seen lots of pics, but I don't recall ever seeing them live on camera like that. Very strange to see. Especially the fact that, below the shoulders, there's not really much of a body to some of these characters. Just an arm and some loose fabric.

And I hate to say it, but I think the guy doing Kermit now really needs to work on that voice. I know it's never been a perfect impersonation, but I remember it being a lot closer than it was on SNL last night.

Meanwhile, whoever's doing Piggy and Fozzie Bear now is spot on. I'd swear that still sounded like Frank Oz voicing them.

I must not have good ears, because I've never really noticed a huge difference between Henson's original Kermit voice and whoever is doing it now. I think it sounds fine.

There were actually public memorial services.

But the point is, they weren't on television, so there wouldn't have been any pulling back of the camera.

Yeah, Steve Whitmire's Kermit has been variable over the years. Sometimes it sounds closer to Henson's than others. Then again, by now he has been playing the role for 60% as long as Henson did, so although I personally prefer and miss Henson, I'm not sure I can begrudge him for making the role his own.

Eric Jacobson's versions of most of Frank Oz's male characters are nearly dead-on, but I find his Piggy isn't quite as authentic.

I was really surprised that the reviews have been all positive. I might just see the movie now, as I had some concerns before that I might be a little too "old" for this movie.

I doubt it will happen, but if the Muppets do well, and muppet popularity grows for some reason, could this finally mean a return of Farscape somehow? Man I hope.

60 reviews in, and still at 100%. With Armond White off the tomatometer now, could we actually see it stay that way once all is said and done? That would be unprecedented.

He's apparently only off there temporarily, as he changed publications and they're waiting to authorize his new one, but yeah, I agree. It certainly would be nice.

Rotten Tomatos is up to 69 reviews and still at 100%, obviously Statler and Waldorf's review isn't in yet.

I'm excited to take my kids to this on Saturday. The Muppet Show DVDs have been getting a good workout in our house for the past month.

^Disney owns Farscape?

I would rather have a return of The Muppet show. Set in the theatre like the original show, not that revamp they did in the 90's.

Doesn't Disney own the Jim Hansen Company now, which owns Farscape? That's what I thought at least.

Yes, Disney owns Jim Henson. I don't know if Henson owns Farscape outright, but you're still going to need to get Disney involved if you want to use Henson's creatures.

The most annoying thing about that revamp was most of the original characters barely even seemed to appear. Instead it was all about the annoying prawn and jamaican dude.

More Farscape or Muppet Show would be cool, but what I really want is a DVD set of those early Muppet specials from the 70s. :bolian:
