The Moving Turbolift (Late to the Party?)

Ptrope

Agitator
Admiral
I was just looking through the HD screen caps on TrekCore, researching my 3D bridge model, and looked at the background of this shot:

http://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x03hd/wherenomanhasgonebeforehd052.jpg

It appears that, at that moment, the lift was behind the central command stations; I only noticed it because I couldn't figure out exactly which station was behind Mitchell, since communications and the captain's chair should've been there. Clearly they jockeyed the set pieces around for that shot.

So I guess, once upon a time, the bridge really was lined up with the ship ... :D

Here's another shot from By Any Other Name that further proofs that they did indeed shuffle around the elements of the bridge set.

Kirk: I don't feel like looking at the viewscreen today. I want to watch the hot yeoman come off the turbolift. Turn the command platform around!

Sulu: Must be Tuesday.

They didn't move the turbolift, they moved/rotated the helm/nav console. In that case, it was apparently to get the desired shot composition, while in the "By Any Other Name" screencap, it was apparently to save them the trouble of erecting the wild wall/console section that would properly have been in the background there.

Or the viewscreen which would force them to create expensive special effects just for the background.

Wow. Those two screen caps are a trip. I had never noticed those shots in their episodes before.

Yeah, I got that ;). Makes me think of the central set pieces like some enormous "See & Say":

"The Vulcan says - 'Illogical'"

"The Scotsman says - 'It's green!'"

...

Yeah, I got that ;). Makes me think of the central set pieces like some enormous "See & Say":

"The Scottsman says - 'It's green!'"

You do realize that you're now committed to animating such a sequence with your bridge model!

Sincerely,

Bill

Knowing something about film shoots, I can tell you why they did stuff like this.
1. Sometimes it's because part of the "wild" set was pulled out and no one wanted to take the time to put the set back together for a quick shot
2. Sometimes it's because the lighting is already rigged for the set in one angle, and it's easier and quicker to spin something like the helm than to relight the set
3. Related to 2, sometimes they plunk actors into the wrong stations on the bridge because that station's already lit. You can see it in a number of episodes, where someone is supposed to be at their station, but you can see that the station behind them is someone else's.
4. Sometimes the director just wants a shot that isn't possible with the set's normal configuration, but usually it's 1-3.

Can I just show Chekov spinning on the platform until he turns green? :D

Put it all into the comic project in the Art Forum.

I keep doing a double-take at the thread title, because a part of me is thinking, "Well, of course the turbolift moves -- it wouldn't work otherwise!"
