The Most Unsatisfying Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Disappointing Tv or Movies

Most Disappointing Scifi of all time?

  • Total voters
    62
  • Poll closed .
If they just removed that one scene with the fridge....I would've been happier with it.

Dunno. For me there's an implicit line that it just crossed with that scene.

Soviets just aren't as much fun as fiendishly evil gestapo guys either.

Not that I dismiss the film outright,....it's a reasonable romp all in all.

- I loved the ending of BSG and consider it one of the best endings ever. No disappointment there. BSG is one of the few shows to actually get a conclusion.

As for the poll, I voted for Lost, Fringe and Schumacher's Batman.

I didn't like the ending of Lost. They dropped the ball on the island stuff and tried to pretend it was about the characters all along. Fringe was a pretty decent show but it's ending was more of a stopping point than a wrap-up. It's like they didn't know what to do. Batman, that's been discussed extensively already over the years. It was a departure from the first Burton movie and not in a way that appealed to me.

Other disappointments...

- Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict could have been up there with Babylon 5 if Tribune hadn't dumbed them down for business reasons.

- The movie Sunshine started off as excellent sci fi but it completely fell apart in its final act. A real disappointment there.

I think we are talking about the biggest disappointment, not the worst film as such. I mean, I expected Prometheus to be terrible, and in that I was not disappointed.

I cast 3 votes, 2 for popular choices and 1 for an outlier:
  • Phantom Menace - I'm not even a huge SW fan, but I expected to be entertained, not pained.
  • Crystal Skull - Directly compared with the original three, the film-making is by far inferior.
  • Avatar - As with Phantom Menace, I didn't expect a masterpiece, but the carbon-copy plot, dull FX and overwhelming self-importance made it a negative experience

My theory is all people who hated Alien 3 saw Aliens but hadn't seen Alien. Otherwise they'd know: everybody dies.

No Alien 3 option then...
I liked Alien 3 for what it was. What I thought really worked about those first three Alien movies is that each one had a style that was distinctly its own. They were stories that centered around the same character and concept but they could easily have been three separate movies, each standing on their own.

I've selected: Attack of the Clones, but I actually have a soft spot for Phantom Menace, despite Jar-Jar and other, assorted problems. And it does seem to be the only prequel script that George Lucas actually put any real effort into. AoTC sucks, all around, though. It's much more brief to discuss what it got right than what all that it did wrong. The "mystery" motif in this movie is very thin and holds no interest, at all. Hayden's so scrawny and whiney, in this one, that to see AoTC the first time, it's like, "... is this supposed to be the real Anakin?" For an instant, I thought there might've really been 3 people in the elevator and this wirey dude with his robes hanging on him, like he was a hanger, was just some ... extra help, or something. But no.

I really didn't get him in the part, at all. But to see him all buff and everything for Revenge of the Sith, he looked much more believable in the role. Padme's costumes were all shite. The Kamino aliens and their spoon chairs with floodlight seat cushions shining up their arse couldn't have been more laughable. CGI Yoda looks like a painting. The young Jedi sabre duel with the decrepit Count Dooku was bad enough, but when Yoda bounces all around like a rubber ball, it was like George Lucas giving us the finger. George ... He knew better than to release this movie. Tell me something, George: why do you gotta be like that? I'm a paying customer!

I would've liked it if they ditched the fleet on Mars, began a settlement there and then cut to the 21st century where we have a panel show with an eccentric guy arguing for an old Mars civilisation with scratchy photos that look vaguely like ruins with everyone else chuckling at him.
And how would they have lived on Mars exactly when it doesn't in any way support human life?

People have different opinions so whatever, but for me I love Season 4 and Daybreak is my favourite BSG episode of all. Just outstanding.

Only 2 of those were really disappointing Phantom Menace must have sucked the air out of all SW fans.

The Joel Schumacher Batman

Some of those were expected to be bad.

The Expanse is fantastic. So was Man of Steel.

I really didn't care for Batman Begins. It was a bit too long for my liking.

It did have great visuals and a sense of world about it, but I really didn't get that engrossed in that world they had created. Production was good though and I give them credit for all the things they created in that movie but I just didn't warm to it.

I was not disapointed in any of the movies or shows on that list that I have seen.
I loved Fringe, Lost and BSG all the way through.
I loved Cloverfield.
I enjoy the SW prequels.
Promethus was actually a lot better than I expected.
The Expanse has been great.
While it wasn't at the same level as Raiders, or Last Crusade, I still thought Crystal Skull was OK.
I don't really remember Superman Returns, but I don't think I had any major issues with it. MoS was enjoyable.
Avatar might not have had the most original story, but I loved the visuals and the world building.
The Schumacher Batman movies are kind of fun if you don't take them seriously.
Green Lantern wasn't the complete disaster I was expecting.
I think I've seen Escape from LA, but I don't remember it.

OP: Why not have a choice for all? Each film was a mistake, either suffering from ass-brained casting, or did not need to be produced in the first place.
