The most painful physical ailment you've experienced?

I had a migraine that lasted three weeks. The pain was so all consumming that i could barely function.

Ive had two absessed teeth, both while pregnant with each kid. I actually considered jumping out a window to my death just to be done with the pain. Speaking of kids..

My lovely son was 10lbs at birth. I decided, after the horrible experience i had with my daughter's birth, to have him at home. Ya, big mistake. No drugs, he got stuck, labor lasted over 12 hours, and i lost a shit load of blood. Ended up in the hospital anyway.

Also had a miscarriage. That was unbelievably painful too. Wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy.

Im going to have to go with absessed tooth as the worst kind of pain, though. It's unrelenting torture.

Oh no wait! I thought of another one! A sinus infection! Man, that hurts! I remember a few years ago i had tonsilitis, took a crap load of painkillers and by the time i went to emerg i was so doped up on painkillers they were more worried about that then the tonsilitis. A few weeks later i got a sinus infection. I was too afraid of taking any painkillers after nearly od'ing the last time, i suffered through the pain. Worst idea ever!

I bit off part of the tip of my tongue while crossing the street. I mis-stepped and stumbled on the curb, and somehow took out a chunk of my tongue. This in either 1992 or 1993, and I still have a small section missing.
It hurt like hell for a couple of days, and I really couldn't eat or drink without pain for a week.

You are an insane woman...but extremely brave!

I feel for your significant other and the sheer directed rage they very likely recieved from their labouring partner!

I've had nearly two dozen surgeries, but of those I only recall one being exceptionally painful (it involved cutting off a portion of my earlobe and grafting that onto the inner ear). I broke a toe by running barefoot through the living room and into a 15lb barbell a certain family member left in the middle of the floor, but that wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I think the most painful overall experience I've had was DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). DKA caused the worst nausea I've ever experienced (and I'd much rather be in pain than be nauseated), as well as difficulty breathing due to high CO2 blood levels, along with a host of other symptoms. I was so ill I lost nearly 10lbs in one day, and was in ICU for three days.

My carpal tunnel syndrome is pretty painful sometimes, but honestly the worst pain I've felt has been cramps, I think I've been pretty lucky overall, but I don't think men can understand how painful menstrual cramps can be. I am guessing that my most painful experience will all change in April when I give birth. It won't be natural, but I still expect it to be rather painful.

I got an infected ingrown toenail when I was a kid. My mom took me to the doctor to have it removed. He gave me a shot of novocaine and proceeded to remove the nail. Unfortunately, it turns out, novocaine doesn't work in the presence of infection, but that didn't stop the bastard. The nurse and my mother had to hold me down while I screamed bloody murder for ten minutes it took for the procedure. My mother never took any of us kids back to that monster.

I've had 6 such operations. The very first one was at the hospital, a student doctor who didn't have a clue what he was doing, no anesthetic, wrong (too large/serated) surgical scissors, so yeah.

The other 5 were carried out by a much better surgeon at the local health village, but the second surgery was complicated by the nail curving and impacting the bone, so it required more cutting.

Those were all pretty bad.
YIKE!! You have my sympathy.

When I was in high school I had surgery done to take care of ingrown toenails - they basically removed the whole side of the nails so they can never be ingrown again. The actual surgery was not bad - local anesthetic, with the disturbing side effect of being awake to see smoke wafting up from my feet and dangerous metal implants emitting sparks. It looked like I was being arc welded.

The real pain was on the trip home, when the anesthetic wore off in about .005 seconds. Worst thing about the whole thing was this happened right around Thanksgiving and so I spent the whole holiday in pain.

Lol, he might have suffered a bit.

The midwife hadnt expected my son to be that big, guessed him around 8lbs. So it should have been an easy birth. The thing is, his shoulder was stuck on my pelvic bone, and she had to get in there and pull him out. What they do is reach in and grab the baby under the elbow to pull him out, he, however, had his arms extended, which made it even harder to get at him. It was that, coupled with his large size that caused the bleeding. By the end i was pretty sure i was going to die, and told my husband goodbye, and sorry for the mess.

Do you really want to start swapping birth horror stories? I mean I reckon I could get you all backing off from your screens if I pitch it just right. After all there are some women on this board who still want to have children. I object to these kinds of discussions because, as I said earlier, the outcome is almost always joyful and if it isn't it still shouldn't be discussed in a thread about ailments. Pregnancy and childbirth are not illnesses.

You're right, but that doesn't stop me from me from trying to get my kids to feel guilty about it (not that it ever works, but never mind. ;)). The end results of childbirth are the best in the world, of that there's no doubt.

Oops, sorry. I love my son, and don't hold his large head against him. :)

Guilty? I did not ask to be brought into the world, but into it I came! :)

And about that gift of life? Yer welcome...

Two weeks ago, I was rushed to the ER in excruciating pain in my upper abdomen - I had never been in such pain in my entire life.

To make matters worse, I had also been breathing to try to control the pain, and hyperventilated in the process - my hands went numb to where I couldn't feel them at all, and my fingers stiffened and went in all directions - I thought I was having a stroke and was terrified. The paramedics in the ambulance told me these were symptoms of hyperventilation - but up until then, I thought I was stroking out.

In the ER (after about a billion tests), I was diagnosed with gallstones. I'll have to have surgery soon to get it sorted out....but in the meantime I have to be careful about what I eat.

By far, that abdominal pain was the worst pain I'd ever experienced. It was terrible, and extremely scary.

Damn! What a bunch of unhealthful people we all are!

Here's to wishing us all good health in the future!
