Since we have an "Underrated Movie" thread, I thought why not have one for the other side? Which Trek movie is the most overrated and why?

For me, it's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, it's not. I just think it's a bit overrated.

One vote for TMP - at least amongst fans. Critically only TWOK is rated in any way shape or form whatsoever.

agreed...

i know it's supposed to be a classic and is well loved by so many fans out there... it's just never been one that i've fully enjoyed... tried watching it over and over, it just never did anything for me...

The Wrath of Khan is an excellent movie, but it often seems like if someone does not like it they aren't a real Star Trek fan. It's the go-to choice for best star trek movie, but still a bit overrated.

I'm actually going to go with The Voyage Home, too. I do like it, and it's a bit of goofy, light fun, but that's about all it is.

I really don't think any of the top Star Trek films are overrated in my book. I think the top movies that are usually rated the best really are the best in my opinion.

Now the fact that after multiple viewings they can get a little tedious because I can practically recite the dialog verbatim is another story all together.

The Voyage Home...sure it's fun, has nice humorous moments and is well acted and directed it's just not "teh awesome" as it's reputation.

First Contact for me, easily.
Sure I enjoy the hell out of it. But for all the praise it gets, IMO it does a lot of harm that outweighs the good.

I won't write an essay here, but I'm bothered by the mishandling of Picard's character and the portrayal of Cochrane. I don't buy the creation of Cochrane's warp drive as depicted. The Borg having to use time travel and the introduction of the Queen really screwed up the whole Borg idea.

And I still get the feeling of this movie being "The Best of Both Worlds II", where they wanted to take TNG best eps and re-do it on the big screen.

I got other problems with FC, but those are some main points. God help me I'm really entertained by it, but as a fan I gotta consider other aspects.

I would say TVH. It always strikes me as a ham and cheese fest, what with the bad humour.

I agree.

Also, a very trite way to wrap up the seriously-themed "trilogy" that began with Wrath of Khan.

Save the whales, save Earth, get slap on wrist and a new ship that's the same design as previous movie Enterprise. RESET BUTTONZ!

Also, it annoyed me whenever a new Trek movie was mentioned...the producers/etc. would say "in the spirit of Star Trek IV".

Oddly, none of them were in the spirit of that movie.

I go with TUC. As others have said about other films, I'm not saying it's a bad film. I enjoy it. I just think it's overrated. I think without Harve Bennett to oversee him, Nick Meyer went a bit overboard in some aspects that detract from the film. There are some plot points I object too, and some of it was a bit too predictable as well.

Again, not a bad film, just I think it's overrated for what it is.

Unquestionably TVH. I never understood the raves over what I felt was a badly written PSA. The plot holes (oh, no! He used that dreaded phrase) were even more prevalent than in the other films and the way they just glossed over messing with the time line (in complete opposition to the way it has been handled in prior Trek) with a laugh and a wink was just darned insulting... Oh, well.

TVH. And First Contact. Never got the gushing praise for either of them. Oh, and TUC.

This.

Wrath of Khan was watchable, enjoyable, but no classic.

The Undiscovered County was way too pretentious and took itself far too seriously. There was none of the fun that made classic Trek great.
