The Measure of a Man
is a stand-out episode. It features the first major debate about artificial rights, and much of it is done as a courtroom drama rather than space opera.

Let's jettison "The Best of Both Worlds II". It may be a reversal of TBOBW part 1, but it's by no means generic and it fulfills the metaphor in the title as Locutus is arguably the best position to have in a Borg collective. Until the Queen played her hand.

"The Host" is dislodged. It's the first and only (as far as TNG is concerned) Trill story, with the complexities of having different people incarnate the same entity. First time in the franchise that female homosexuality is shown as a possible option. A big step, given the general timidity of the franchise vis a vis those questions.

"The Arsenal of Freedom" has been set free. This was the first TNG episode, and the franchise really, that fully utilized the entire cast, something that honestly wasn't done a great deal. Additionally, it was the first credited directing in STAR TREK of Les Landau, who would go on to direct each spinoff except DISCOVERY (for now, at least), ending up with 45 episodes under his belt... almost two seasons worth.

"Time's Arrow" flies like a banana...:D

Data's head is found in a mine on Earth, Guinan tells Picard he should go on the mission... or Universe ending paradoxes may ensue... mysterious... I wonder what the conclusion of that story will be... wink, wink.

"Ethics" gets a dishonorable mention. Different kinds of medical procedures are confronted and a choice is made towards one that's debatable. The question of whether any progress could happen without taking risks is not honestly asked and too hastily answered. Beverly doesn't take into account the will of the patient which IMO is fundamental. At any rate that episode is unique even if disputable in its results. Doctor Russel is diabolized regardless of her success and the fact that she may be just as caring as Doctor Crusher but as was done with Jellico she was marked to be the bad guy of the episode. Too bad.

I don't have a problem with Russel being the bad guy. Earlier in the episode she used experimental drugs on a patient before the conventional treatment without the consent and possibly cost him his life. Maybe Beverly shouldn't have resisted offering the risky treatment but in insisting experimental short cuts not be made around consent, she was absolutely right.

Silicon Avatar is shattered. One of the few episodes where somebody is not won over by high minded morals.

As with many in season 5, Dr Kila Marr is scapegoated as being Cruella De Vil (har har) and the creature (which isn't sentient) glorified beyond belief. The fact her name isn't spelled "Kyla" also shows some laxity but at least the episode dared to show more than one side, and I'll admit I liked the cuttlefish scene too...

Good news: It's game over for "The Game". Yes, the story's elements are "time tested tropes" if not bordering on cliche (everyone is taken over, except for meeeeee, and they're all out to get meeeeee, there's someone that can stop us so stop him first) is there, and the fact that a sense of threat is built up during the episode is a good sign that the episode, and show itself, hasn't gotten stale (yet). It almost has a season one vibe, and yet it works, overcoming the most basic aspects of the story, while not coming across as a throwback.

Nor is it all that dated. But without using too many more words, let's use a video instead:

Can't wait for that to be re-released in HD! The shoulder pads alone would make that worthwhile...

I don't have a problem with Russel being the bad guy. Earlier in the episode she used experimental drugs on a patient before the conventional treatment without the consent and possibly cost him his life. Maybe Beverly shouldn't have resisted offering the risky treatment but in insisting experimental shortcuts not be made around consent, she was absolutely right.
....

And Beverly thought that she could just force Worf to accept his condition by restraining him indefinitely and by that she's just as cruel and unjust as Russel is said to be, except in a different way.

At any rate, the matter is as I said debatable and I don't like the pat answer given by the episode.

Besides, there's always a point where drugs will be experimented on patients. Sometimes it's people who are fatally ill, sometimes it's just people who are in good health and are just looking at earning some extra money (the latter expose themselves to unknown risks that could possibly mean getting a very serious deterioration of their bodies, even death in extreme cases, let's not bury our heads in the sand and pretend that these people don't exist.)

"Who Watches The Watchers"
has been spotted and taken off this list. We idolize the captains and put them on almost godlike pedestals at times. This is the first time that concept is taken literally, something that would be taken even further with Sisko's eventual fate.

"Interface" is disconnected. Geordi can't accept the possible death of his mother and is willing to go to any length to prove that she's still alive. An entity takes advantage of that to get Geordi to save it from death. Data goes along with Geordi's risk-taking fantasy in spite of his ethical program that should tell him otherwise. It's also a stain on an otherwise blameless record for Geordi.

And Beverly thought that she could just force Worf to accept his condition by restraining him indefinitely and by that she's just as cruel and unjust as Russel is said to be, except in a different way.

At any rate, the matter is as I said debatable and I don't like the pat answer given by the episode.

Just because Beverly was wrong to withhold the option does not mean Russel was right. Yeah, people experiment on patients. In structured studies, with consent. Not in the field because you feel like it.

"The Loss" is unique in letting Troi cut loose and be bitchy for once!

I wish I could just give the answer now...because there's a lot of episodes to go, and I think it's an interesting question worthy of some debate.

And I feel like I have the answer.

But that feels like cheating.

"The Perfect Mate": The story of a woman that sort of takes pride in becoming someone's sex-slave...disturbing and unique, fortunately. (I'd hate it if it was the standard episode.)

Just because Beverly was wrong to withhold the option does not mean Russel was right. Yeah, people experiment on patients. In structured studies, with consent. Not in the field because you feel like it.

That part was put there to forcefully discredit Russel's side of the debate. I agree that it's excessive but so is Beverly's idea that she'll keep Worf in restraints until he changes his mind about killing himself. And as I said it's just as cruel as whatever Russel has done. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" has some truth to it even if you're not a believer.

"Hide And Q", for being part of an arc but also for being filled with weird ideas that don't connect to the rest of the arc at all. Q's fascination with Riker, his true form being a ball of light with three snakes growing out of it, the Q's whole approach to humanity here -- none of resonates with the other Q episodes. It feels less like an actual episode and more like a tie-in product where the writer was kept mostly in the dark re: what the show was doing.

And a weird ep to write Troi out of! She would have fit fine here. That's a pairing they could have played once, Troi and Q go on an adventure (though hey, at the rate CBSAA is churning out content maybe that's an episode of a Trek to come!)
