THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS
OPERATION -- ANNIHILATE!

FRIDAY'S CHILD

A Private Little War is out. It ends with Kirk arming a formerly peaceful people in violation of the prime directive just to give them a slim chance at survival. It's such a stark contrast with the usual laughing into the sunset endings of TOS.

THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS

FRIDAY'S CHILD

Operation - Annihilate!, which does give some small development for Kirk in the form of Sam and his family, and so is a bit more impactful to the series overall than the other two episodes.

I have just created the poll for the final two episodes, "THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS" and "FRIDAY'S CHILD".

Please vote on which one you think is the Most Generic episode. After a week or so, which should be enough time for everyone to vote, a 'winner' will be declared.

In the meantime, the DS9 version has started, so feel free to vote in that arena.

I voted "FRIDAY'S CHILD" as the most generic as I can see some originality in the scenario of Return, which is absent from Friday's.

Huh, how come THE RETURN OF THE ARCHONS stayed at the list? First mentioning of Prime Directive can be generic? I am speechless guys :ack:

Only 3 left......I thought for sure 'Battlefield' would be the winner (loser?). Oh, well.........

People black on one side and white on the other? Not generic.

I voted "FRIDAY'S CHILD" as the most generic as I can see some originality in the scenario of Return, which is absent from Friday's.

I picked Friday's Child way back, and The Apple, for my choices. I was half right, that's better than I thought.

And isn't Return of the Archons the first time Kirk convinces a computer to kill itself? But then that can swing both ways, as not generic, because first time, but generic, because he does it enough to seem like it's a hobby.

We're on shore leave, what are you going to do Spock?
Stay in my quarters and meditate.
Sounds great, what are you going to do Jim?
Bones, I'm going to see if I can get the computer to feel regret and blow up.

I knew this exercise would end with one of these two - which are among my top 10 favorites - in the running if not the winner. Neither is even slightly generic. Scotty in command, the fascinating look at the culture of Capella IV, the first Kirk v. the Computer episode (excepting Court Martial), the Red Hour concept . . . .

So, vote for the other one. Problem solved! :techman:

I know what I can do, thanks. My problem is as @Phaser Two said, non of these two episode is generic. It is a surprising result to me. I played the game for ENT and the last two episodes were also surprisingly. Probably, we should define better what is generic for the game to common understanding. Is generic meaning to being without any special features or is generic meaning to being "characteristically" for the series? I am not sure if all the players understand the same.
Whatever the case, as I said before I appreciate the learn effect and " a ha" moments of comments and reasoning.

Two of my least favourite Star Trek episodes, what a dilemma
I like the title "Return Of The Archons" and I also like that it gave us the phrase "....of the body.."
My brothers and I, and our group of friends, used to use this phrase as a term of friendship or bonding, jokingly of course.
I voted "Archons" as most generic from the two left.
Incidently, if I could pick typical or generic episodes, or what episodes best sum up Star Trek, they would be, in no particular order, "The Corbomite Maneuver", "The Enemy Within", "Balance Of Terror", "Amok Time" or "Arena".
My humble opinion.

It depends how you define "computer", since one could argue that What Are Little Girls Made Of? was the actual first instance of Kirk doing that, assuming you include androids.

Strangely enough, in Sci. Fi. they rarely realize that robots are nothing more than computers with limbs and sensors.

Good point, so instead of about 4 different times he's killed computers by talking, it's more like 6?

Nah, no matter what y'all vote the most generic StarTrek episode is "The Apple".
  • Big 3 on the landing party? Check.
  • Evil planet-running computer? Check.
  • Paradise that must be ruined? Check.
  • Ship in danger? Check.
  • Girls (and boys) who don't know this Earth thing called "kissing"? Check.
  • Redshirt deaths? Check. Check. Check. Check. Check.
  • Prime Directive discussed and chucked out the window? Check.
  • Cutesy ending? Check.

That's why I picked it, too. Very well articulated!

I have to say, the poll is very close so far. With all the other shows, it was a landslide vote. I am very interested to see the end result.

Yep.

This is on the poster who struck it from the list, though. ;)
