TOS has Romulans stating they're a "warrior race". TNG brings out the "it's always game of chess with them" line. Without getting too deep into too many tangents, since the flying squirrel is kept under control by the duncel moose, let's start with:

TNG Season 5: "The Next Phase"​

Conniving and scheming, the Romulans were testing a new weapon/shield design that sort of went boom-boom in their faces. Yes, there's the convenient physics thing. Yes, Troi cannot read minds out of phase. But the sub-plot handling of Ro and Geordi not being dead was great, the incidental music was first rate, and it shows some Romulan scheming at their best. There may be better examples of that, but all of the elements come together so nicely - leaving the obvious and/or fun nitpicks about selective gravity and all very quickly forgiven, due to how the viewer is drawn into the story and kept there. The best TREK will forego scientific accuracy for convenience if the philosophical (or any other) bent is strong enough and this one is a great example of the trope, not unlike "The Enemy Within".

And what did Riker say? We will never know.

Ronald D Moore whipped up a masterpiece IMHO. So many good episodes exist but this one always has a special place for me.

From the very beginning, the Romulans were an intriguing race, with a broad mix of personalities, from Mark Lenard's war-weary commander to Lawrence Montaigne's politically-connected hothead Decius. The parallels between the RomCom and Kirk were strongly drawn, making the new one real to us and adding layers to the more familiar one. Other facets: Stiles's all-too-realistic prejudice. The sad loss of the young bridegroom, an acknowledgement that even victory in war comes at a cost. McCoy's wonderful speech to Kirk.

No, "Balance of Terror" -- one of my TOS favorites -- doesn't deserve to linger on a "Most Disliked" list.

Eliminating The Pegasus for reasons: it is does not have sufficient Romulan content for the list. There is only one Romulan in the episode, and he only appears in order to provide an oustide character for a story that is really focused on Riker and his adversary, the Admiral.

So many good choices, but I'll select The Enemy:

- I like that Worf wasn't swayed. What he did was bigoted, but it was natural for the character at that point in time. It's not even that he didn't want to give his blood, it's that he just couldn't bring himself to. It shows how the aftereffects of war linger on after its end, something that is too often glossed over.
- The uneasy cooperation between LaForge and Bochra was interesting.
- The episode has a few funny exchanges/lines:

Picard: "Commander Tomalak. It would appear our away team has rescued a second man from your one-man ship."

Bochra: "You're my prisoner!"
LaForge: "Right… congratulations. Surely a strategic triumph for the Romulan Empire. "

Bochra: "You're lying!"
LaForge: "I never lie when I've got sand in my shoes, commodore."

I'll save The Enterprise Incident. I loved the twist that this was Starfleet subterfuge at play. The relationship between Spock at the Romulan commander was interesting as well.

I remember really liking it when I was younger, and finding that it still holds up years later on rewatch.

Nice to see the good ones already taken!

TNG Season 3: "Tin Man"​

The Romulans are used only for a chase trope, but the chess metaphor is well-handled, right down to the use of two ships.

It also leaves the episode open-ended.

Tin Man/Gumtu seems more a magical maguffin but it's more a plot device for a rather refreshing character, Tam Elbron, who is almost analogous to a high-IQ human with ADHD and Misophonia and other conditions. His intrigue of Data was fantastic. Not a single character underused or misused.

Even the music is so fitting of the material; seasons 1-4 TNG really were special - as made by all of its composers. Jay Chattaway's take is nothing less than magnificent.

Really great episode.

Saving "Message in a Bottle" mostly for the interaction between EMHs Robert Picardo and Andy Dick -- there were points where I laughed so hard I had to catch my breath! The action plot was also pretty good. I could wish the series had followed up more, and sooner, on the ramifications of the first contact with the Alpha Quadrant, but that's not the fault of this episode. (Even though us not actually seeing the Doc reporting to Starfleet is. What a missed opportunity!)

That and it's cool that Worf can tell when a Romulan warbird decloacks before it does so.

But we get more delicious Romulan guile, with a side order and generous helping of mashed potato Data development in this episode that consistently remains enthralling.

As usual, TNG's music remains at a visceral high point; complementing an intellectually-compelling (and atypical as a bonus) story rather then carrying the dramatic weight as proxy for any empty, hollow "script" that a lot of modern TV chuck out. But before I digress, I'll reel myself into a role that made me think of another actor who may have been just as well-suited for it, a hobby I engage in surprisingly rarely: the Romulan in that video - she reminds me of an actor who could have been inspired casting, not unlike Linda Thorsen for "The Chase":

Jacqueline Pearce (Servalan from Blake's 7, Chessene from Doctor Who, and other memorable characters) would have nailed it as the Romulan spy in this episode... IMHO, go fig...

Saving TNG Season 6: "Face Of The Enemy"

Great episode that shows us a rare peek into some of the inner workings of the Romulan empire ... the distrust and loathing that loyal military commander Toreth (she probably would have made a fine Starfleet officer) has for the treacherous methods of the Tal'Shiar vs. the arrogance and b*tchiness that "Rakal" is forced to project to be convincing. Also gave Sirtis the chance to play a very different role for once.

Oh, I forgot. It's also simply a fun hour filled with suspense, that makes you keep wondering how Deanna will get saved from her predicament.

The writers felt more interested in exploring different technology (Romulans nicked membrane keyboard designs but not engine schematics), but it's also a one-off that could go in many directions (peace or war) later if need be.

TNG Season 6: "Timescape"​

But any high concept story by Braga is one I'm not going to miss, and this one packs a great little mystery that's, at its core (*snarf!*), very true to Trekkian lore. Critters from another continuum use black holes to incubate their young and as Romulan ships run off of a power source analogous to black holes...

But without bringing in Enterprise and her crew, this story could not be made in quite the same way, if at all.

It's definitely more a pulpy sci-fi than overly soapy runabout for this adventure.

Removing DS9’s “The Die Is Cast” because that simply can’t be on ANY “most disliked” list. Romulan Colonel Lovok is probably the weak link in the guest cast, but with actors like Andrew Robinson and Paul Dooley that’s no real slight. I already praised this ep to high heaven in the last thread, so all I’ll say is that it was a game-changer for DS9. Great stuff.

I will do my part and save "IMPROBABLE CAUSE". This was an excellent character piece for Odo and especially Garak, it's always a rewatch.

My favorite moment has to be when Odo correctly guessed Garak blew up his own shop, and the look of shock on Garak's face. I'm pretty sure we never saw that look again. Crafty guy, that Garak... but Odo is hip to your tricks!

The Romulans didn't have a lot to do in ENT's "Minefield" other than be ominous, but it was a solid episode anyway. I liked the interaction between Archer and Reed, the latter IMO being something of an underused character. Dominic Keating, given the opportunity, does nice work.

Also, this is the first ENT episode I've eliminated in all of this year's "Most Disliked" games -- I would have saved "In a Mirror Darkly" in the 2-episodes round, but wasn't fast enough. So I couldn't resist!
