Game The Most Disliked Romulan Episode/Movie

Not going to run around, I'm just going to cut to

TNG Season 6: “The Chase”

Every species has a common bond is something of a charming theme. Doesn't mean they'll all be nice overnight, but it's an eye-opener.

The treasure hunt/chase plot works as well.

It's not a great story but it's by no means a bad one. I suspect, if made in season 4, it would have had a bit more oomph and excitement to it though.

I think this one is one of Ronald D Moore's more fully optimistic stories, as opposed to being all dystopian, and/or a mixture of both.

And it's got Linda Thorson, remember her from "The Avengers"? :D

It also reminds me of "Cupid's Dagger" (The Orville) where a planet has claim of ownership by 2 different species, but DNA reveals both species had a parent lineage.

Saving Inter Arma ... .This is probably the deepest dive into Romulan political culture, with a sense of the complicating plotting that occurs. It gives a sense of honorable and disreputable Romulans, and how others might be drawn into its darker operations.

I can't remain neutral any longer:

TNG Season 1: "The Neutral Zone"

TNG knew it needed a TOS-era villain. Not as a crutch to lean on, but as universe expansion. The Romulans were the perfect choice to re-introduce, given their limited usage in TOS. And the rest would be history, in so many great ways. And a few really, really bad ones too...

Also, the writers' strike rendered the script stuck in first draft mode. A refinement would likely have taken care of the more contentious bits, especially regarding unusual arrogance on the part of Picard et al.

That and any show that has a human's family lineage being comprised of Muppets and the first six actors that played Doctor Who, two incarnations as parent groups no less, makes a hilarious in-joke that was not meant to be seen given the low density of CRT television sets. It's doubly unfortunate the Blu-Ray release didn't show the original screen as an extra...

It goes on, too: her sons married Ginger Grant and Maryann Summers (both named after characters from Gilligan's Island); they had kids called Jonathan Frakes Raymond, Denise Pookie Raymond ("Pookie" being Denise Crosby's nickname), LeVar Burton Raymond, and Cheryl Gates Raymond (Cheryl being Gates McFadden's actual first name). Then Jonathan marries Brent Spiner, Denise marries Marina Sirtis, and Cheryl marries Wil Wesley, and they give rise to the next batch of the Raymond line, all named after M*A*S*H characters: Charles E. Winchester, Sherman T. Potter, Francis J. Mulcahy, and Walter O'Reilley [sic], and together with Margaret Houlihan and Kellye Nakahara, they bring forth some of the ones you mentioned as well as Mary Richards and Louis Grant, both characters from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Past that point I can't make anything out, but this was certainly one of the more enjoyable Okudagrams to sift through.

Continuing my "Picard" run, "The Impossible Box."
Everything clicks together so pleasingly in this episode, it's such an effective crescendo moment in the story. The chase through the Artifact is excellent. Such a great tension build throughout this episode.

Okay, I'll own it: I liked the first Kelvinverse movie. It was a good adventure story and great space opera, and I could mostly believe that these new embodiments were my familiar TOS characters as they might have been in a somewhat different universe. Especially Karl Urban, who has been aptly described as channeling De Kelley. Less so Simon Pegg, but he's just so -- Simon Peggian -- that I can mostly forgive him for not being much like Jimmy Doohan. Bruce Greenwood is my Captain Pike. (Though I'm willing to consider Anson Mount, once I watch that Discovery season.) And of course Faran Tahir, as Captain Robau, is simply the most memetic badass to ever badass.

She's barely in it, but

TOS Feature: "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"

is the first Trek film to incorporate Romulans* and in a plot that attempted to be epic and an epic comedy at the same time.

* as well as proper shuttlecraft, imagine if TMP had one going into the bay when it was shown at point blank range...

The notion of a three-way treaty is not akin to the Simpsons episode where the 3 kids buy the same comic book, though TFF doesn't begin go in the same direction - to its credit and not because Kirk and Klaa reading a comic with the Romulan Commander in go-go boots would remain interesting for about two seconds...

Though the shared planet could have been delved into deeper; just getting talented actors like David Warner is not enough. Indeed, would the Federation of the one to abandon the planet and there's nothing in the movie to explain it? (Hence one reason Roddenberry calling this movie "apocryphal".) It's almost as if the movie is trying to cram in a ton of set pieces but not flesh them out as fully as they could be.

And yet the renegade Sybok (wonderfully acted) luring in the Federation, with Klaa watching from a distance... there is something of a good story in the 2 hour mire.

The comedy is what tears down this movie the most (but not all). Indeed, the second half - largely devoid of humor - really stands out and almost makes up for its first half; Shatner and fellow writers were wise to keep the camptacular stuff to appease the studio, which adored the use of it in the preceding film, to the side.

The reveal at the end of Kir'Shara that the Romulans were behind the entire military Vulcan government, manipulating them for "reunification" was a thrilling moment, giving us the first taste of the upcoming (but never seen) Romulan War far better than the machinations of the Aenar trilogy. Romulans are best when they're the spymasters.

But, I'm being difficult again, picking an episode not on this list. My true name choice is The Survivor. An underrated gem that I watched just last week for another one of these contests and grew an appreciation for. There is alot to be said about the quality of TAS episodes, and I'm not one to judge. In just 20-some odd minutes, they tell a compelling story, a romance in the vein of The Man Trap, but where the monster doesn't turn out to be a monster.

But for the purposes of this contest, the Romulan presence is top notch. The unnamed Commander here (they never give their names in TOS... that's a neat idea I never thought too closely about before) is sarcastic or a little jaded, almost breaking the fourth wall in his acknowledgement that Kirk breaking the Neutral Zone is a routine thing.

Commander: You appear to have a propensity for trespassing in the Neutral Zone, Captain Kirk.
Kirk: It was not deliberate, I assure you.
Commander: It never is.

Possibly one of the greatest lines in all of Trek, and reveals so much about this character, and if you dissect it further, how he probably doesn't enjoy being on a treaty-violating spy mission (a nice transition, too, between their two TOS appearances and how they are portrayed in the TNG era and retconned in Enterprise. Even Kirk didn't deal with honor-bound Romulans all the time).

"EYE OF THE NEEDLE" gets saved.

This was a great character episode, with a nice twist at the end about Telek R'Mor being from 20 years ago. Vaughn Armstrong was called back again and again in STAR TREK for various roles, and it's no surprise when you see him play this Romulan. Great season 1 entry, and the best use of the 'quick shortcut home' plot VOYAGER did in the first few seasons.

I'll save Image In The Sand. Cretak was a very personable Romulan, and the relationship with Kira was nice. Well at first. ;) The Romulan presence wouldn't be a problem until the next episode, but I like what they did initially with Crektak.

Worf having trouble opening up with people regarding Jadzia's death, as was O'Brien, Bashir and Quark's role in his story.

And on Earth, Sisko is at home, with the revelation about his true parenthood happening. I always loved the episodes with Ben, Jake and Joseph together, as they had great chemistry and played off each other so well.

Then the cliffhanger with, "It's me. Dax."

DS9’s “Shadows and Symbols”. Great climax to the previous episode’s slow build, I enjoyed the intercutting of all three storylines and the building tension. Megan Cole made a great Romulan and I wish she’d stuck around longer. I got a little fed up of Ezri this season (she what, what, three episodes devoted to her while O’Brien got none and Jake virtually vanished) but enjoyed her intro a lot.

Taking out "Birthright, Part I". The reason is simple... except for the couple Romulan guards at the very end, there are no Romulans in the episode. (I'm not counting Ba'el, and her appearance was very brief, anyway.)

I feel it doesn't belong on the list, and therefore can't be judged as a 'Best/Worst' episode.

I'll save The Mind's Eye, again. ;)

I just love the mood of the whole episode, really. Jerry Fleck as the Romulan working on La Forge was very good, as is the whole mystery of the actual nature of the Romulan involvement in Klingon affairs.

Hearing the mysterious voice from the shadows of course hints at the future story for Sela and the Klingon civil war.

I can see two good possibility in my mind's eye...

TNG Season 4: "The Mind's Eye"

Romulans kidnap Geordi, who's alone in a shuttle and traveling to the planet of the cooties (Risa) so they ultimately did him a favor. Bugging his VISOR and indoctrinating him, he becomes a puppet for an assassination. It's a decent story in its own right, but it also brings in Sela - the offspring of Yar (from an alternate-timeline brought into ours) and her Romulan captor (of high rank). Though she is not yet revealed and the handling is pretty good. Unfortunately, this is probably Sela's best story, save for her explanation to Picard as to who she is, as she's poorly scripted - more as a generic stick figure - in her other stories. Season 1 gave Yar more depth. :(

D'oh! :guffaw:It got saved while I was typing it out! LOL! But nobody's perfect, so...

TNG Season 4: "Future Imperfect"

It's one of those "Let's a put Riker through a mind****" routine. It does a great double-bluff by making the audience think Romulans are behind it all.

There are some nice touches, including the ship's computer lagging to sell the issue to the audience...

...but, contractions. This is, what, the third time TNG has resorted to a compromised Data via "You can't use contractions, nah nah-nee nyah nah"? Except Data has used them many times already in the show and there's no retake...

Of course, being season 4, the show is finding crutches and using continuity references already. (After which we'll doubtlessly see new characters, perhaps even Cousin Oliver, as means to scope out new script possibilities, but I digress...) This time, it's Minuet, but the usage is so nicely done - and Riker really felt she was real (and still does!). Indeed, the part where Riker seems to be under the control of Romulans may have been the seeds for "The Mind's Eye".

And all because a little boy is lonely. Who looks like an extra from an episode of "The X Files". Be careful Scully!

Gotta save "Unification II." For Riker and Co.'s espionage, and the then-rare glimpse of actual sleaze in or near our dear Federation, for Romulan treachery and Romulan honor, for Data arguing logic with someone we know to be a master. But mainly for Spock, Leonard Nimoy bringing his A-game even after all these years, and to such a meaty role! He pretty much offsets Denise Crosby as Sela, a leering villain who only needs a mustache to twirl. (Honestly, folks, you can't set up an archenemy when one half of the conflict has no freakin' idea what the other half is talking about!)

And I must save "Unification I", for having the best pre-"Picard" Romulan world building. I do not have enough praise for that scene with the soup merchant!

Saving "Maps and Legends".

Laris and Zhabon are in it. They are such a great duo of characters. You could make a series just on them.
