Game The Most Disliked 2-Hour/2-Part Episode

There are still some great episodes here, but I'm honestly going to put Et In Arcadia Ego ahead of all of them.

What this episode did was boil everything in the season down to one fundamental idea: Picard coming to terms with and being at peace with Data's sacrifice. It wasn't about all the (I mean no disrespect) nerdy, pedantic crap Trek fans like to naturally swoon over. It wasn't about the XB project, Zhat Vash, synth rebellion, "where's Crusher/Geordi/Brophy, etc." It all came down to Picard's personal journey in learning to deal with Data's sacrifice and death. And it was beautifully done.

Well......that and Riker showing up with a fleet and talking shit to Commodore Oh.

It was all about that too.

After a bit of dithering, I've decided to save VOY: "Equinox". I haven't seen it in years, but I remember being wowed by the opening of Equinox under attack, the nucleogenic aliens, the conflict between Janeway and Ransom, how Voyager and Equinox dropped out of warp during their chase, and disgusted at Ransom's use of the aliens, and at Janeway's torture of Noah Lessing. I thought this was such an exciting two-parter. In fact, I'm going to watch it now!

In a Mirror, Darkly - I was 14 when that first aired, and was very much looking forward to seeing this one when I found out that they would be revisiting the mirror universe and a TOS-era Starship - was not dissapointed. You could tell the cast had a great time making this one and I quite often find myself revisiting it.

You beat me to saving "IN A MIRROR, DARKLY"... that was going to be my next one.

So my next one after is "CARETAKER". It's actually a really great pilot. Good story, good directing, and set things up nicely. My only problem with it is that the series didn't fully utilize its own premise, which is not the pilot episode's fault. I still remember that night it premiered... and grinning at how Quark then became one of the very few lead characters to be in ALL 24th set series at the time.

I won’t be able to sleep if I don’t rescue DS9’s “What We Leave Behind”. Although not without its flaws, it’s nevertheless one of my favourite series finales of anything ever, and puts me through the emotional wringer every time I’ve seen it.

The war ends with appropriate spectacle and it’s a very bittersweet victory, as any war is. The intercutting between the firecaves and the war scenes admittedly make the timing seem off, and the Sisko/Dukat confrontation is unfortunately a tad cartoonish, but as a low key mythological geek I still enjoyed the supernatural and mythological archetypes woven into the series and found it richer for it. This is the only Trek finale that had a real sense of finality, and the parting of so many characters makes for a genuinely emotional final half hour. I get the feels even just thinking about it...! That closing shot, pulling away from Kira and Jake until the station itself is just a twinkling star is simply SUBLIME.

Its been 20 years and I STILL miss this show.

Saving Worforce I/II. It has flaws, but it at least gives a glimpse of what could have been done with the series following its premise more creatively, even at such a late stage. I would have liked to see more "married" Janeway, as well as others acting like civilians.

Taking out VOY, Season 3 & 4: “Scorpion”.

Awesome two-parter. Up until that moment, the stakes for voyager were mostly just to get home safely. In this two parter, for the first time they are caught in the middle of a conflict with much higher stakes, where no good choices exist --and inaction/fleeing from the scene is also a choice they may come to regret sorely later. The only solution seems to be a pact with the devil - and as we all know, those may turn (out) very wrong.

Spectacular visual effects (for the time), a new cast member, and a different direction for the series. This episode was as much a watershed event for Voyager as BOBW was for TNG.

I really like "Unification." I just love the universe in this... the Trek Cantina with the fat Ferengi and the 4-handed alien musician who bonds with Worf, the shipyard presided over by the officious Zakdorn that Troi must charm, the suspicious Romulan soup merchant convinced Data & Picard are government agents, the inhospitable environment of the Klingon ship, that cliffhanger with Spock's entrance. It's all pretty great!

My local station that carried the syndicated TNG reruns when I was a kid was SLAVISH about airing everything in production order, so "Skin Of Evil" was always followed by Tasha still alive in "Symbiosis", and "Unification II" always aired before "Unification I." I only saw these eps out of sequence until like 2010, now it's almost weird to watch them in their proper order.

Obviously you wish Sela's plan had been a little more impressive, but nothing's perfect.

DS9, Season 2: “The Maquis”

Am surprised this one remained so long on the list; one's one of Trek's finest - not just DS9's for story and narrative setup.Granted, I could have voted for it first...

That and there's a great scene involving the price of peace, told by Quark, that's really quite good.

"Flesh and Blood" raised some interesting questions, and even tried answering a few. I wasn't a huge fan of the "holographic rights" issues that Voyager raised, considering them at best imperfect analogies to human rights issues (which is why I appreciated that, even in this context, the show demonstrated that sometimes a hologram really is just a hologram), but here it was well-done. Robert Picardo was, as always, a standout, and the Doctor's conversion to Iden's cause (and later his realization of Iden's madness) played believably. Also, the follow-up to the events of "The Killing Game" was a welcome bit of continuity.

The Search is my next save. It opens season three with a bang, and a cool new ship, whilst setting up the notion that the Founders are actually Odo's species. It's a shame that in part two the writers felt the need to go down the old,'it's all a dream' ending. Despite this, it successfully sets up the Dominion as The Bad Guys.

I'm going to save DS9: "Image In The Sand/Shadows & Symbols". I love DS9, and this two parter has so much going on in it - the introduction of Ezri Dax (one of my favourite Trek characters), Sisko and his family, the return of Benny Russell, Worf & co getting Jadzia into Sto Vo Kor by blowing up (part of) a star. However, it was Kira vs Cretak that really held my attention - Kira slowly coming to like Cretak (the jumja stick scene!), only to discover the fateful Romulan treachery and then seeing off a squadron of warbirds with a few rattley old impulse ships and a newly convinced Admiral Ross.

I'm going to do the unexpected and save Endgame. I think it's underrated as a finale. My only real gripes are the Seven/Chakotay romance and that we don't see the crew on Earth. Everything else I like a lot.

Going to save ENT, Season 1: “Broken Bow” . Despite season 1 of Enterrprise not turning out as I expected, there was not too much wrong with the pilot itself. Of course it had its technical flaws, such as portraying Qo' nos to be 4 days away at warp 4.5, but overall, I think it did a good job of setting up the crew as a bunch of intrepid explorers with all the good intentions and ideals we know from the later series, but who still have a thing or two to learn about interstellar exploration and diplomacy.

These were my reasons for hating "Dark Frontier", when I was eliminating it a year ago in a Least Disliked game:

There is no clever angle in DF. They just felt they needed another big Borg face-off, and here we are. It's so lazy and tired, all it's ideas are half-baked gimmicks that are barely explored before being tossed aside for the next.

And I always marveled over how improbably successful "First Contact" was at making the Queen work, and here Voyager turns her into the psycho stalker ex of a Lifetime movie. Those humans have done her wrong and are the worst! But her main drive, her obsession, is just to be with (assimilate) them again...

I am so turned around these days, the same exact explanation works as why I am now pro-"Dark Frontier" and am saving it here. Everything that made it awful before makes it comforting now. 2 hours of silly Borg bombast with a cheesy soap opera villainess at the core? Sign me up!

I've always liked "Birthright", or at least the Klingon part of it. It was a nuanced take into the Klingon and Romulan cultures, a clear growth opportunity for Worf (having to confront his extreme anti-Romulan prejudice). None of the parties come off as cardboard, be it Romulans, Klingons or Worf, but all as having real motivations behind their actions.

Much less fond of the Data dream sequence, because it's a dream sequence and those are always terrible. Always.

While it doesn't stand up to scrutiny and is often lazy at times and makes ya feel ill by the end, at least on first viewing it's a lot of fun. Just like my ex...

VOY, Season 4: “The Killing Game”

There are still some interesting plot ideas (and chilling; the ship becoming a prison, and its inhabitants being used and manipulated under physical duress in the ultimate use of the Holodeck (and Holodeck trope)) and budget well-applied where needed. Indeed, I recall even a mention of energy requirements - nice touch. :)

The innovations that stem to form the episode's high concept ideas are loosely reminiscent of Doctor Who's 'The War Games', except for a lot of brainadope to get the characters to think they're even other species in their wars and even mannerisms and esoteric knowledge therein... and all for the Hirogen to use as target practice only to be healed over and over. Which was chilling. And yet, for that latter aspect, "The Day of the Dove" did it slightly more justice.

The episode sorta glosses over how the Hirogen took over, but that aside - I just rolled with it - the Holodeck stuff fits in with their system of analyzing prey. The Holodeck being quite a find...

Janeway handing out holographic technology is an interesting twist, though why would the Hirogen take to it so readily? Thank goodness for safety overrides where the challenge becomes real.

And why Earth battles when none of the characters has WW2 experience, even Neelix the Rat, eaten by Felix the Cat (and then Felix threw up but that's another tale best left for Fritz...)? Okay, as a budget control measure and the Hirogen stumbling on it in the databank thought the systematic wholesale one-sided genocide was cool. Okey dokey... when is the followup where Janeway giving them the technology leading them down a completely different yet completely obvious twist going to take place?

Also, and there's no reason to mention this, when adding new words into it, spellcheck decided "Neelix" should be "Netflix". :guffaw:
