One more before bed! "Second Chances" is a knock-out of an episode. It's such a clever idea. My only complaint is that Thomas didn't eventually get reconciled into the Riker family. I wanted to see him attending the Riker/Troi wedding in Nemesis.

Alright, work over, so why This Side of Paradise? Well, I love episodes that put established characters on the back-foot, because it forces said character to behave in unpredictable and often revealing ways.

I think Spock's admission in this episode, that "for the first time in my life... I felt happy" is the most achingly tragic moment in the entirety of TOS and is a clear indicator that Star Trek was a science fiction show that was taking a deeper dive into it's characters than it's peers. It's at once illuminating, melancholy and beautiful and I think any romantic tale that can hit all of those notes in the span of 45 minutes is something special. Plus, Nimoy plays it for everything it is worth as he pretty much always does.

Putting Leonard Nimoy front and centre in a TOS script is always the right decision.

It also helps that Jill Ireland was gorgeous.

Saving "THE PARADISE SYNDROME".

Kirk happy and in love with a wife was nice to see, because you can see he loves fully and without reservation. It was truly tragic that he not only lost his wife, but his unborn child.

People tend to forget that TOS had a LOT of dark or unhappy endings... "WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE", "THE MAN TRAP", "CHARLIE X", "BALANCE OF TERROR", "THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR", "THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER", A PRIVATE LITTLE WAR", and a number of others. This was another reminder of how it's not always a happy ending.

We'll Always Have Paris. One of the better episodes of Season 1, and I don't consider that to be the low bar that some do. Casablanca is my favourite movie of all time, so there's that and also it's pretty rare we see Picard get romantically involved. It's an episode that has grown in stature for me over time.

Metamorphosis is the episode that introduces Zefram Cochrane to the franchise, so it's already a great episode seeing the crew interacting with him. Cochrane having to deal with the Companion's love is certainly hard for him, but when it transfers into the now-dead Commissioner's body, they can finally be together.

Also, a great planet set, one of the best of TOS, with nice touches such as drifting clouds and the feeling of lots of space.

The serendipitously obtained shot of the Companion in Nancy's body looking through her scarf and lowering it, beautifully evoking her transformation from an energy to a material form, is one of the most artistic shots in all of the TOS.

I love that so many early TNG episodes have already been eliminated.

I'm saving “11:59”. When I first saw it, I thought it was boring and I really loved "Someone To Watch Over Me". On rewatching, my opinions about those episodes changed more than any others I think. The love story in "11:59" is really sweet and very well acted. Seven and the EMH singing together is cute, but some of the EMH's behaviour in "Someone To Watch Over Me" is a bit creepy - if he wants to date Seven, he really can't be her mentor too.

The premise of "In the Flesh" didn't make a whole lot of sense -- why would 8472 choose to learn more about the Federation in that way, and wow wasn't their data about Starfleet Academy ludicrously detailed? -- but it was enough fun that I could just kind of roll with the absurdity. Ray Walston being in it helped. The ROTW was light and enjoyable, and I liked that, this time, Chakotay wasn't really fooled by the woman who was targeting him.
