It wasn't a compliment toward the episode. In fact, if "THESE ARE THE VOYAGES..." didn't happen, it would easily be the worst episode of ENT. As proof, it DID win 'Most Disliked' episode of ENT at least once.

Saving "LIFESIGNS". It was a beautiful story for The Doctor. Susan Diol played Dr. Pel with grace and dignity. They were a really nice couple.

TOS, Season 3: “All Our Yesterdays”

The story is rough around the edges, but the idea of Spock devolving due to a time machine's shenanigans is something worthy of DC Fontana. (If only McCoy and Kirk started going under, or at least explaining Spock. A little exposition might have helped, though there's enough to infer based on what Mr Atoz said. Still, why not McCoy and Kirk? Is Vulcan brain physiognomy/physiology/magic so different to Sarpedions compared to differences between humans/Sarpedions?)

Jean Lisette Aroeste's script is brimming with ideas and, especially considering the state of TOS in season 3, the fact it's rough around the edges yet so compelling just shows her quality as a writer under harsh production conditions. As with many TOS scripts, a mild rewrite would have polished up a lot - but at the time and being even trailblazing in its own right, TOS was inventive with its ideas. It kept enough in to keep it interesting. It's tough having to be a writer or even script editor even in the best of times, But good ideas make rolling with any nitpicks so much easier... I loved both her scripts and I think her other one got saved, which was more an "unrequited love" story that's a bit underrated IMHO...

- Oh, I suspected as much I know much derision is poured upon "Precious Cargo", with even one of the writers and some production staff having a go too, but I must admit, I don't really understand why. The sheer volume of scorn is quite bewildering, but no one has actually said why they loathe it so much (that I have seen, anyway - perhaps I've blocked it all out?).
One day, when I can prepare myself for the ridicule, I'll start a thread asking for people to 'constructively criticise' the episode so I can see what I may be 'missing'

Anyway, back to the task at hand... DS9: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" is the next to go. And only partly because of Dr. Zimmerman's romancing of Leeta (which I only like because it makes Rom, eventually, step up and declare his feelings for her). No, the main reason I'm saving this one is for Dr. Bashir's amazing and loving mum! That little speech she gave him as to why she and his dad had little Jules genetically engineered has me welling up every time

"Fascination" is a beloved DS9 for me. It's so fun! And gorgeously directed.

It used to have such a bad rep, but I feel like it's been awhile since I've stumbled upon any negative comments about it. Has the fanbase at large got around to embracing it, I wonder, or does it just not come up anymore?

Oh god, agreed. I get so annoyed everytime the producers say that in another interview, "we're going to tie things into Calypso!" JUST DON'T. It's a terrible idea. Anything that could come up with will be as idiotic as that end of season 2. "All the seeming continuity errors are ordered CLASSIFIED! See, I told you we had an amazing way to make it all seamless..."

Just let Calypso be it's own thing and leave it be. Any attempt to connect it back to the main narrative will just harm both of them.

It was the episode that ended my fandom back in the day! I started waffling in Voyager season 5, slowly missing a greater number of episodes as we went along, and when I caught "Precious Cargo" I declared for the first time "that's it, I am DONE with Star Trek!"

The story delivered a powerful depiction of how ordinary people can become complicit in atrocity, and how important it is to remember even terrible truths. The latter is a theme that's revisited in another of my favorite Voyager episodes, "Living Witness."

While writing, my latest choice,

TNG, Season 1: “11001001”

was taken. Ironically, the romance - which is focused mostly on how Riker can get his jollies with an unreal fantasy in the truest source of the word (!!) - is about as shallow as it gets, especially as the Bynars make full use of this - in order to get what they love, which is their planet and lives being able to continue. And they go to extraordinary lengths. Indeed, an aspect of that folds into my next choice. But the surrounding story in 11001001 separate from Riker's jollytime antics is rather clever and original sci-fi, and the Bynars (whose ruler is named "John", but few under 60 and fewer under 50 and far fewer under 40, and nobody under 0 will appreciatre the name "John Byner"...) are fairly awesome in their own right. We all want to see them back, but how would you do it with the best chance of keeping them so high up in that list we all love of loved creations? Like Doctor Who fans loving the Zygons, but they return and the consensus was "meh", there's a lot more that's needed to eke out a new aspect for beloved characters to keep them as great as they were in their first outing.

So here's my latest choice:

TOS, Season 3: "The Way To Eden"​

This one has a surfeit of romances. More than meets the eye but not led by Optimus Prime. Or even Oculus Prime for that matter.

The first is the more literal, if not obvious Chekov/Galliulin romance, which is almost a cut/paste template and only developed so far, but at least Chekov, for once, isn't comic relief fodder or the butt of a joke. (Season 3's not all bad, Ckekov getting serious material creates a much welcomed balance for the character.)

The next romance is the "space hippies"' love for Eden, if not their belief of it an definitely their desire to go live there because everything's perfect there (like the Nexus but far easier to buy into as a concept). Most of them seem sincere of this quest, and some even question when asked to commit hate (you know, stuff like deceit and murder). Certainly willing to break treaties and risk all sorts of things just to get there.

The next is Dr Sevrin (and arguably Tongo Rad?) and Sevrin's love of abusing his "brethren" in a quiet position of glory as a quaint cult leader. Putting aside Sevrin's disease (which is interesting of itself, never mind that "civilization" can create and manifest a physical disease as he claims, aided by the name McCoy calls it, and in real life some diseases require special handling to prevent contagion. ) Heck, Trek has later shown groups of people separating from their society and they're as sharp as the horse hair destined to become a wig.

It goes without saying that Kirk's love of his ship and crew is omnipresent.

Spock having love as we know it is implausible, but he... loves?... the quest for knowledge and understanding to listen to this splinter of society.

And, of course, McCoy loves to bicker but that's not much on display in this episode and that's okay.

The original script was to be rather different and the end result filmed was clearly a mess, with tons of possibilities of which none were properly fleshed out - which is probably its biggest mistake. But I can think of episodes properly deserving hate.

I'm positive someone somewhere hated Herbert Armstrong, though whether he is the reason for the pejorative epithet "Herbert" - might be a coincidence, but if it doesn't not fit there are other contenders...

I love the ending - it's not merely a clever metaphor for "the serpent" (another clever metaphor in of itself), it's the biggest irony of them all. And a reminder why civilization was built. To safely determine what's edible, why we developed clothing (because the elements alone can be harmful, though in this episode that's something of a stretch... until you dance in a patch of poison oak...), etc. Not just a cynical statement of "acid", "smoking grass", and so on - though there are clearly a number of ways this can be interpreted and who doesn't love that?

Also, this never gets old and some of the lyrics are impressively poignant - especially the opening ones:

- Oh, I suspected as much I know much derision is poured upon "Precious Cargo", with even one of the writers and some production staff having a go too, but I must admit, I don't really understand why. The sheer volume of scorn is quite bewildering, but no one has actually said why they loathe it so much (that I have seen, anyway - perhaps I've blocked it all out?).
One day, when I can prepare myself for the ridicule, I'll start a thread asking for people to 'constructively criticise' the episode so I can see what I may be 'missing'

[Edit: I don't need to start a thread - I found a couple here and here. And they weren't too bad - my opinion hasn't been swayed ]

Anyway, back to the task at hand... DS9: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" is the next to go. And only partly because of Dr. Zimmerman's romancing of Leeta (which I only like because it makes Rom, eventually, step up and declare his feelings for her). No, the main reason I'm saving this one is for Dr. Bashir's amazing and loving mum! That little speech she gave him as to why she and his dad had little Jules genetically engineered has me welling up every time

I'll give you my analysis on why "PRECIOUS CARGO" was appalingly bad.

First, 'Romance of the Week' episodes rely almost entirely on the chemistry of the couple in question. Here, the 'chemistry' was so forced and artificial that it just automatically brought down the episode.

Second, while having two types of plots or stories used in the same episode is old hat by the time this was produced, it just didn't work. A kidnapping plot and romance between them just felt like no real thought was put into it. (Despite the fact it was a direct callback to TNG's "The Perfect Mate", which was a FAR superior episode and romance.) Slapping together two stories and hoping it works was not a strategy conducive to a good production.

Third, her character was just so IRRITATING. Maybe it's a personal bias, but I cannot stand snobs. They are annoying, rude, and are just such a chore to even be around that it's impossible for me to hide my disgust. Watching snobs is even worse... it's one of the reasons why I don't watch any reality shows. So many of them are snobs of the worst kind, and really show just how much humans don't really deserve to exist.

Fourth, the guest actress was terrible. Just absolutely, horribly, terrible. STAR TREK usually does well in the casting department, but this was an utter, total failure. Which is a major problem here, since the episode relies so heavily on the guest romance.

If I were to be completely honest, "THESE ARE THE VOYAGES..." is actually superior to "PRECIOUS CARGO". And everyone knows how much I DESPISE that episode. But that episode MIGHT be better if it was not the series finale, and Frakes always gives his all. But it will always rank as my most hated episode because of so many factors that would make this post far longer than it should be.

But "PRECIOUS CARGO"... nothing precious about this episode. It is one of the extremely few episodes in the franchise that I cannot defend its existence.

If you like it, more power to you. But I hope I clarified on why this episode is hated. At least, from my point of view.

 

[Farscape One]

Since I mentioned it in explaining of "PRECIOUS CARGO", I will save "The Perfect Mate" next.

There was some serious chemistry between them, and it was a solid story. Picard's refusal to answer the ambassador's question at the end was very telling. Wonderful episode, and acted superbly by Stewart and Janssen. (Great actress. If you ever get a chance, watch NIP/TUCK. Her character, Ava, was one of THE best ones in the entire run of the series. And it was an excellent show... personally, Ryan Murphy's best and crowning achievement.)

Saving "House Of Quark"/"Looking For Par'Mach In All The Wrong Places." Quark and Grilka are simply the best mismatched couple in Trek. I love the way Quark uses his own strengths to save her house, and the tremendous courage he shows in facing down D'Ghor. Miles's efforts to make Keiko happy are also heartwarming.

But who am I kidding? I would have saved this one just for the scene of a roomful of Klingon warriors scratching their heads trying to figure out the mysteries of accounting! I giggle just thinking about it.

I'm gonna save one of my beloved trash episodes -- "Angel One." What can I say, season 1 and 2 is actually my favorite era of TNG these days. I am also impressed with how sexualized and feminized they allow the men to be in this. There's usually such a barrier against that.
