A NOTE ON LIST PARAMETERS:

As with most of these other themes, ROTW has expressed itself in a wide variety of ways over the life of the franchise. Compiling the list, I started to feel like I was sitting in a jury box on "Star Trek: SVU" -- Trek has mixed romance and mind-control/alien possession A LOT, and closed many of those eps with the suggestion that maybe it wasn't really the external influence causing their behavior, maybe they SECRETLY had these feelings -- so figuring out which of those episodes belonged and which should be excluded was tricky.

I ultimately settled on excluding anything where one half of the "romance" is an alien trying to seduce the other character so they can use them as food ("Sub Rosa", "Man Of The People", "The Muse", "Favorite Son"), because those never felt consenting. But if our character seemed left in a wistful place of "we might have been amazing together, if you weren't an evil alien queen!", those would stay.

The list also (somewhat controversially ) includes romances where the audience experiences the full story of the romance within a single episode, even if the in-universe time it lasts is greater ("11:59", "The Inner Light", "Homestead", etc).

Episodes about long-running pairings they played with multiple times were also left off ("His Way", "Blood Fever", "Data's Day", "Ferengi Love Songs", etc).

The few two-parters with ROTW elements were listed as single items.

Romances between one-off guest characters were excluded, but recurring characters that got ROTW's made it on.

And I'll kick it off by eliminating "Rejoined." Beautiful episode, absolutely my favorite ROTW Trek has ever done. Since the whole Berman era only made two attempts at queer romance storytelling, I'm at least happy this one was a total home run. Their chemistry was through the roof, and the end is devastating, in the best way. What a great actress Terry Farrell has become by this point! Almost hard to believe from this episode how rough she started out.

It's an unusually well-executed plot-device ship-threat B story, as well. That effect of Dax walking on the forcefield at the end is excellent.

It's like picking out my least favorite set of cooties, but...

TOS, Season 3: “The Enterprise Incident”​

High adventure! Suspense! Espionage! Cloak and dagger stuff, literally!

...but Spock getting busy?!... yup, this one has the kitchen sink too and it's because Spock was faking it...

...with a Commander who is quick to order her own explosion upon Tal seeing her on board Enterprise...

And, of course, the biggest romance of all - Scotty trying to get the cloaking device's plug into the engine's socket.

This one is definitely one of the stories on the list that's 7/10 or higher (IMHO, YMMV) -- but I see quite a few that qualify, which I can't wait to prattle on about. But TEI has always been one of my favorites...

I'm going to drop out Lessons. I tend to hate Trek romances of the week, to be honest, but this is a fantastic romantic episode, which acts as a "sequel" of sorts to The Inner Light (which I notice is also on this list - I don't think of it as a romance, otherwise I would eliminate it first, since it's one of the finest episodes in all of Trek). Wendy Hughes puts in a great performance, and Nella Daran is a fabulous love interest for Picard that is more than a beautiful face. Of course it fails - but it fails for believable reasons. This episode speaks to something true regarding human relationships - and never comes across as corny - which is a rarity in Trek romance.

"The Game." This is the very first Star Trek I ever saw. Was I ever swept away immediately, even though I basically processed it as the pilot of a spooky space adventure series about Wesley and Robin Lefler. I was ready to watch them every week! They totally seem like the heroic series leads for most of it!

I'm just as happy with what the series actually turned out to be, but as my first Trek ROTW, they really stand as a favorite.

I mean Romance is really not Star Trek's strong suit and ROTW are most often bad anyway.

But I'm gonna eliminate

Haven

I like the exotic ideas and props the episode employs, especially the idea of two lovers sharing a mental bond across time and space and the romantic idea of Haven as a planet so beautiful it has healing powers. And I like the scene with Wyatt and Lwaxana.
Plus I thought for as awkward and forced as it was, the interactions between Deanna and Wyatt weren't terrible.

As a story, it's pretty darn awesome. Partly because it distracts from some gross realities of Riker asking CGI Minuet about how far this pseudorelationship could go, in one of the most bizarre seasononeroddenberryisms of the bunch. And both actors were really selling the near-impossible by acting their socks off too. Definitely a favorite, for numerous rfeasons.

I like the exotic ideas and props the episode employs, especially the idea of two lovers sharing a mental bond across time and space and the romantic idea of Haven as a planet so beautiful it has healing powers.

I got halfway thru "Haven" as I drifted off to sleep last night, and I was surprised how much I was enjoying the whole vibe of it! The communications with Valeda Innis, First Electorine Of Haven, might be the best example of world-building-via-viewscreen they ever managed. That backdrop, her accent, the dress, the hair, the crazy title -- it really feels unique and thought-out.

I also was surprised how believable and lived-in the mother/daughter vibe was between Marina and Majel from the jump. They nailed that right away. I'm thus inspired to save "Half A Life", probably the best of any Lwaxana episode. Usually a ROTW suffers from it's abbreviated screentime, but they really make that work for them here by making the stolen time the whole point of this story. I find it really moving, almost too sad to rewatch.

This ROTW even has a little time travel thrown into the mix to make things more dramatic. I think the relationship between Edith and Kirk is very believable, which is what makes the ending so tragic.

TOS, Season 3: "The Way To Eden"​

The episode is the latter-end season three laziness, which is a shame as there are a few interesting plot points:

• disliking constructed society (so a cave without plumbing will be more fun? Or worse, no medical facilities to treat all the free love-induced maladies!)
  
• new diseases propagating in a closed environment that otherwise would not exist in nature (which a step or two away from untreatable or drug-resistant diseases)
• rebellious teenagers (played by mostly 40 year olds, but I won't peek if you won't)
• the complexity of politics (e.g. Tongo Rad)
  
• cults and following an insane leader, wasn't this before the Manson murder mayhem?

While the episode isn't more than the sum of its parts, it gets kudos for trying to be more than a generic ship-fest and I'll check off Chekov from my list in a moment and it's why I like the episode beyond its concepts/ideas.

I'll get to the romance part in a moment - I've never cared for romance, so I'm tending to gravitate to something that's out of left field or atypical as opposed to "Person A hits on Person B then they go swap saliva then other fluids then get tested positive for something they didn't want." because that's generic and ubiquitous. Like in that Outrageous(ly bad) Okona episode... I just noticed it's not in the list. Could it be added, noting that it would win, probably with a breeze, "most disliked" forevermore?

We clearly see the dichotomy between the spacehippies: Regarding Irina and Adam, who are clearly sincere (if not naive) in their beliefs. And Rad who's just an enabler, if not a snotball - not really sure. Assuming I read the body language correctly, he's mostly there because he's a dignitary's son. Dr Sevrin is somewhere in the middle, leaving the 3 viewers still viewing to guess what they want to. But I think he was sincere, even if driven to insanity. Fanon headcanon makes me think the one in the all-brown outfit was the officer in "The Galileo Seven" who left Starfleet to pursue space hippies beliefs (same actor, different role, why not ).

Walter Koenig disliked the episode for making Chekov serious as a character, but compared to his season 2's persona, "backhanded compliment" and "comic relief" tropes amalgamated, his season 3 seriousness was far more refreshing.We also get an interesting backstory, which fits - season 2 Chekov would seem more the type to vamoose, without any anchoring. This episode provides some. Chekov can be flippant but for the less way-out stuff (e.g. off-screen adventures or season 3) he will remain grounded. Plus, there's some great dialogue between him and Irina where both feel insulted due to the other telling their beliefs. Somehow, a marriage just wasn't going to work out. Never mind a third date. To me anyway, this is a lot more compelling than "If you see some old guy across the room, come across and give me a holler. Speak up since I'm half-deaf, sagging, and bring that cache of little blue pills while you're at it." With the other saying "Looking forward to it and I half-resemble that remark too!" With mushy elevator music. Which is admittedly sweet. It's also sad because I'm starting to resemble the former, though I don't need blue pills... yet. And speaking of sweet, what was the person who discovered castoreum's taste being analogous to vanilla or raspberry for those Valentines's Day (VD) candies? Eww...

If nothing else, it gave us a cool song, which I think a lot of people would love, written by Charles Napier himself:

It was actually! "The Way To Eden" aired Feb '69, Manson murders were in August of that year.

Like in that Outrageous(ly bad) Okona episode... I just noticed it's not in the list. Could it be added, noting that it would win, probably with a breeze, "most disliked" forevermore?

I left off the ones that were romances between non-recurring guest characters. But yes, this episode is terrible, I would burn every copy if I could!

Time for another elimination! I'll go "The Inner Light" this time. In recent years, I've been kind of down on this episode and not rewatching it, because I found the force of the probe off-putting. How could Picard ever be the same after this!, I thought. It must have been a traumatizing experience! These aliens needed to allow an opt-in! Maybe "Hard Time" got me thinking this way. But anyway, I just recently rewatched it, and I was totally swept away all over again and remembered why it's regarded as a classic. Count me back with the pro-Inner-Light group now. It's a tough device, but they execute it right. And Picard gets to live an epic love story in only 20-some minutes, so another clever device to cram a lot of romance into a small container.

I'll start my saving with "LIFESIGNS". An exvellent character episode, one of the highlights of season 2. Robert Picardo just continues to amaze us.

Besides the thin Paris plotline, which was unfortunately needed because it was being peppered throughout this part of the season for that Kazon arc, this episode was flawless.

If there's a bigger reason to save this episode then it's a grey area.

VOY, Season 3: “The Q And The Grey”​

Once they get to the Continuum, the episode is sunk. Not because they did the suicide trope a few times in TNG already, but in that the idea of not merely demystifying but "humanifying" the realm of the Q just didn't sit well with a lot of people, including me. Indeed, as much as I don't like fantasy, if it's woven in well it's a lot easier to roll along with. But Trek has a habit of attaching real science and plausibility to things otherwise deemed magic. Why did "Sub Rosa" just cross by mind?

But before we see the land of the Q, and where the romance is played out and that's where it's fun... they knew how to write this one silly-yet-engaging (no pun intended!!) but somehow keep it from going over the top. By a hair, and guess which one... For the comedic value that just about fits, since there's no way any legitimate, much less soppy, romance is going to stem from this and maybe that's why I liked it. The episode plays with a trope and does nothing but subverting it, in somewhat clever yet conscious ways.

This episode never ceases to amuse... as well as to almost horrify - because Q discussing "Kathy" getting older is strangely not followed up by using wine from fermented sour grapes combined illicit pills, making him - oddly enough - far more benign than the aliens we saw in the 24th century that kept asking about why humans do it. In fact, since it's hard to describe all the antics and attempts at caterwauled cajoling followed by a luurve triangle effectively, they're best seen to be disbelieved:

Hrrm. Its already getting harder. So much mediocrity here. I'm going to save Voyager's Someone to Watch Over Me. It's a genuinely good romantic comedy (how many romantic comedy episodes has Trek done...let alone good ones?) and while I was never one of the people who had the hots for Seven, I could always relate very strongly to the position of The Doctor in this episode - developing feelings for someone unexpectedly, but being too paralyzed by fear to get up the nerve to tell them. Plus Scott Thompson is in the B-plot! Voyager seemed to get all the best (or at least the highest-profile) guest stars.
