Game The Most Disliked Regular Star Trek Character, 2025 Edition

I'm saving Jett Reno for her dry humour, technical competence and cool name.

Up next is the Commodore

Wesley Crusher,

the ultimate computer-like trainee.

Okay, I'm done with the silly puns - at least for now, especially as those above pertained to TOS. Just no promises as to how many TNG-related ones I might make...

In season 1 - especially the first half or more - he's the worst possible plot crutch to use in how he can outdo every stinkin' adult on the ship at every turn. "Datalore" in particular is the nadir. At least we get "Coming of Age", which does him some genuine justice as a character. But, no worries, it does get better:

In comes season 2, for which the scripting for his character improves even more so. Any teens who (a) liked the show, (b) like the character, and (c) wanted to watch would see how to make the first moves in classics such as "The Dauphin". Actually, I like this one because of the hurdles that Salia has to endure, especially guardian Anya, who took a professional liking to Worf. There's a lot of fun little snippets in this episode. Shame it took me a few decades to fully appreciate it, but it's all good.

While TNG also made command more prominent than other divisions, the treatment for Wes in "Pen Pals" is also worthy of some praise.

The less said about his needing a potty break at just the right time in "Where Silence Has Lease" is that much the better. See, tv shows didn't talk about the toilet - unless they were refreshingly crude sitcoms or game shows - at the time, which is why we never see Wes ask Picard, who in turn would say it was okay for him to go to the potty. That, or such a scene might terrorize the 8-year-olds in the audience having to deal with second grade teachers and all.

But all is great until season 4, when he leaves, and then returns in season 5, where there's more season 1 material that's suited his character far better. Even "I'm with Starfleet, we don't lie" is leagues better than any post-season 4 Wesisms. There's no Weslonality left to this slick character for sure by the time season 7 comes along, never mind the nothingburger that's otherwise entitled "STAR TЯEK NEMESIS". Okay, I'll ditch the Wesley puns as you might wrongly think I'm Wespuning them or something just as grotesque.

Harking back to "Datalore", however, have you ever had a time where you tried to point out something no matter how simple to others who were so wound up on their topic and they wouldn't listen (and, for now, it doesn't matter what the reason is)? Even season 1 Wesley may have been a cringeworthy sledgehammer in terms of approach, but part of me wants to think there was an idea in those early scripts that were just let down by the execution. After all, some do say the TNG bridge crew feel like a clique, as exemplified by the treatment of Barclay, Ro, numerous guest planet people of the week, and others.

Saving Boimler. Trek has had a lot of bad takes about what leadership means. Their is a tendency to confuse leadership and command. Boimler himeself failed to understand, but progressive, this is a character that develops self-aware and grows. I love I Excretus for showing using challenges and tests to impove abilities.

I just saw that Captain Archer is still here. Saving him now.

I thought he was well cast, and was a good starter captain for all the others later to follow, mistakes and all.

He got his hands dirty, and I appreciate that about a leader.

I was always a big Kes fan and thought it was such a shame she didn't go the distance on the series. She and Seven could have had such an interesting relationship. That was a character they could have done anything with, the short lifespan would have allowed them to completely reinvent her almost every season (not that the writers would have been actually allowed to do that, but in theory).

Many of her showcase episodes are absolutely top Voyager installments for me - "Persistence Of Vision", "Warlord", "Before & After", and "The Gift." (And I like "Cold Fire" all right too. And Jennifer Lien did the most anyone could do with a script like "Elogium")

The next choice is by far the most logical and I wish I'd remembered earlier:

Tuvok

is easy-peasy. Not since Spock has there been a Vulcan from which we really get to see more of Vulcan lore. Especially one who is not a "neurotypical" Vulcan and often has to practice ritual to remain emotion-free. VOY was the perfect show to explore all this with, what with seven seasons and all.

Paring him with Neelix is an inspired result as well as, honestly, is there no better "odd couple" style pairing?

Tim Russ is also fantastic in the role. Even more so when he has to play Tuvok-fighting-influence, and you know I can't stop frothing and drooling over how awesome the episode "Meld" is.

Slowly, the length of the list is getting more manageable.

(Btw: One of the lesser sides of the game in this direction is that pickings get less fun the further you are. First there's great candidates to pick, at the very end all choices are highly questionable. This is not meant as criticism though, it's unavoidable).

Also, I don't know about 75% of the names on this list. Mostly from those newer series I have no access to, I suppose.

As such, I'm going to pick B'Elanna Torres.

Strong, fiery and ultimately courageous (and not just in the Klingon sense) woman who had to go go through a lot of issues to learn that weaknesses and vulnerabilities can also be strengths.

And, of course, finding someone to be vulnerable with.

Saving Hoshi Sato.

Of all the ENT leads, she might edge out as having the most growth, despite getting so little overall material.

She goes from timid and lacking self-confidence in her abilities in "FIGHT OR FLIGHT" to being a very brave woman who was ready to kill herself to help save Earth (in "COUNTDOWN" when she was about to jump off the platform) and actually standing up to the Earth Prime Minister in "TERRA PRIME".

You can't deny that Linda Park made the very best of everything she was given.

I liked Beverly Crusher from the moment she strolled into the room where a supercharged admiral had already taken out Riker and Worf, and proved she was the smartest person in the room by promptly phasering the guy before he could get close enough to her for hand-to-hand. Cool under pressure, and an excellent shot!

Meow, man!

M'Ress

is next.

An original creation, she is really well-acted/voiced by Majel Barrett.

I thought Ezri Dax was a wonderful addition to DS9, and the post-series novels really ran with her character development - Captain Dax of the Aventine was a force to be reckoned with!

( I think I've removed every character that has been saved while I've been writing this - all five or six of them! I'm so slow)

He could be hit or miss,

Chakotay

but Beltran definitely steals the show when given a chance and more than the usual rubber stamp dialogue. Evil Chakotay ranks up there, almost more since no parallel universe was done but a more creative way (recollections of people transcribed and recreated.)

I removed a couple names from the list below (e.g. Erzi Dax) and believe this is now up to date. Especially as I transposed Arex and M'Ress and fixed that up so I fixed that then looked and hopefully got them all...

There are still so many characters I love here.

I'll go with Jack Crusher. What an arc that was. His reconciliation with Picard inside the hivemind during the Picard finale, that makes me sob every time.
