Game The Most Disliked Regular Star Trek Character, 2025 Edition

He won't whine "woof":

Worf

Gene Roddenberry did want Humans and Klingons to make peace for the 24th century, but it's really Michael Dorn's portrayal and input that took Worf to the next level, making him one of Trek's better characters all-around.

He's also the perfect character to show up in DS9 to give that spinoff a second wind.

What? The Doctor is still on here? Well, I'll just take care of that. Robert Picardo's skill and charm took this character from a minor role to a beloved regular character, one who grew and changed during the series run.

Saving Neelix.

He was quite the jack of all trades. And very much the spiritual sibling of Lwaxana, given his family's death and his exuberant personality. I'm glad he got a happy ending. (And until the current era, the ONLY character from VOY who actually got an ending.)

I don't think he deserved all the hate he got over the years.

Confusion between Captain/Admiral Janeway and Hologram Janeway from the first time we played, and whether or not they all counted collectively as one character. Maybe I should say "non-hologram Janeway" or "the flesh and blood one."

Beckett Mariner is my next save. So chaotic and likeable. That is a next level vocal performance from Tawny Newsome.

I'll save Kathryn Janeway (the real one)

While I like to have fun with her, representing her as some ridiculous caricature every once in a while, she is an iconic Star Trek figure, and one of the Great Captains of classic Trek who had to take up a heroic lead in very difficult circumstances (inspiring her crew, while not showing her own doubt while making some very difficult decisions). She probably got far more than she bargained for when she got that first command.

(And mostly, my criticisms on her are actually more criticisms on the writers, who wrote her somewhat inconsistently, didn't quite always know what to do with her femininity, and wrote her a bit too much as a smug figure (The One Who Always Wins And Gets To Revel In It) in later seasons.)

But even with those remarks, she's one of the figureheads of Trek (and probably a role model for many), no one can deny that.

Chapel is my favorite on SNW. Am I ever shipping her and Spock.

Also, Jess Bush does such a great job of incorporating just enough notes from Majel into that performance that it still connects to the TOS original.

Poor T'Lyn, she made it to the posters but not the regular cast. Seeing as she's not an option I'm going to save... William Riker. Whether he was being everyone's best friend or yelling at them, he brought an energy to the bridge that balanced Picard's detached thoughtfulness.

Janice Rand anyway, in her short appearance, I thought that she had a sweet chemistry with the cast, and wonder where it might have gone if she hadn't been fired.

Great minds think alike and spiked at the curb! :D

Here's my intended write-up:

He had character, for a while!

Hikaru Sulu

Botany, fencing, a sharp magnetic personality early in season 1, has that lovely evil side, he does become "Course set, sir" once "THE BIG THREE" are established, but that's happenstance.

Tending to space critters before the show could showcase shuttles.

He gets a little more to do in the movies, most notably TSFS when overtaking a security dude, and TUC in captaining Excelsior and assisting to save Enterprise from Chang's machinations. Well, he also had a thing for Vixis along with Chekov, and in GEN we would find out that he had found a way to make the time to make a family as Demora proved, complete with my aforementioned save of Scotty ribbing Kirk over it, now that I recall ("if something's important, you make the time".)

Plus reprising his role as Captain Sulu in VOY was a bit bittersweet.

He's not quite Best(er), but I'll Chekov the list my next vote:
Pavel Chekov

Started out as a gimmick to lure in all the Monkees fans, complete with Davy Jones wig, be glad he never wore the wig Dr Smith would don in a later episode of "Lost in Space".

Chekov would often be used as a backhanded compliment, given all the lines he'd spew only for Kirk or someone else to promptly correct him. Which explains why, in season 3, he's played more straight - IMHO, it's a change for the better.

We sadly never got to see much of Chekov in season 3 as well, but I would opine that his best story might be "Day of the Dove", showing Chekov as ideal and Chekov as under the influence of the emo-vampire fritter. Indeed, Walter Koenig's acting skills are quite strong when given something worthy to do (as "Dove") showed and, of course, as Alfred Bester in "Babylon 5".

"The Deadly Years" would be the runner-up episode: Somehow immune from the radiation of the week, he has to endure some medical testing - and this is before the 24th century with the magic wavy blue lights:

Interesting sound overdub in that clip, noting the lack of door whoosh sound at the end. Very clean and easy to hear, though!

I will make the SNW cast the first one to fully leave the board and save Christopher Pike. (DS9 would have been finished awhile ago, if not for Ezri hanging around...)

Did they ever nail the casting on that one. He was so perfect in the role they had to build an entire series around him.

TOS is already done as well. M'Ress and Arex are from the animated series, not the original. ;)

EDIT: My bad. Looks like someone clipped Janice Rand off the list.
