Game The Most Disliked Recycled Title Episode

"Rules Of Acquisition" is a surprising success from many angles... a good ROTW for Quark (one of two that season!), a good handling of Ferengi feminism (the only time that ever happened?), plus the ballsiness of that backdoor Dominion intro is delightful.

Though overall they're not the most successful alien, I like the design of the Dosi.

The crazy thing about this ep for me is anything around Zek. Sisko & Kira treat him appallingly, given that he is a head of state, but also his "comic" sexual harassment of Kira is NOT aging well either. Problematic from both sides!

Since we're out of good episodes, what's left are a gaggle of "lesser evils" and or "good intendeds". This may be the worst episode in a way or two, but not in others.

DS9, Season 6: "Profit & Lace"

Some of the themes behind the episode are sound enough, though nobody's going to deny the episode's execution is just... warped. And on so many levels. And inconsistently despite some shocking predictability, but if the plot themes were so serious, then does it make sense to go all outlandish on something else? Like Bart Simpson Bender the Robot jumping up and down screaming "Hey look at me, I'm causing a distraction!" That's just too silly to contemplate.

But they were combining in serious themes with drag pop culture as a source of levity to compensate, and the result of this recipe was still in bad taste.

The episode goes out of its way to tell us it's funny, right down to the Grand Negus' cane staff having the head of Yogurt ("Spaceballs") on it.

And, of course, getting Henry Gibson - who would pique the interest of many an audience member, since he's noted mostly for comedy ("Laugh In"), but has done serious roles ("Wonder Woman", others) as well. Unfortunately the expectations led to letdown.

Another positive is the inclusion of Odo, but the Odo/Quark pairing is inevitable.

And, as with all things DS9, those costumes would really shine in a Blu-Ray restoration from the original film negatives. The episode might even become watchable, if largely for the lush and intricate designs.

So here's a little more by Henry Gibson:

Oof! Late to the game again. I'm glad to see all the eps I would have saved already saved :) Out of the remaining few, I have to save DS9 "The Muse" as any Lwaxana episode is a good episode (did I or someone else say that somewhere before?). Odo offering to marry Lwaxana so she can keep her unborn son just shows how much he's connected to her at this point. And his awkward vows/speech that turns into a heartfelt and true account of his feelings towards her during the ceremony are a highpoint!
(I did kind of like Jake's part, but it was all a bit "meh" really - Lwaxana stole the show as always).

"Profit & Loss" is a satisfying episode. I always thought there was something interesting about how they patiently built all these plot threads about the Cardassian Dissident Movement, and then all of that is just blown up and made moot by the Dominion/Cardassian Alliance. That's life!

An alternative viewpoint:

TOS, Season 1: "The Alternative Factor"

Engineering has a new section that looks somewhat cool, if not small as a compartment and never seen again. An engineer grade wearing blue is also unique to the series, save for one or two other times we see someone in blue. After all, some of Spock's duties could arguably overlap in engineering sciences as well so it's not really out of continuity.

The alien craft with upturned goldfish bowl looks decent enough.

Some of the direction, complete with the old "vaseline on the lens" trick, is nicely done.

And it's trying to do epic scale sci-fi. It doesn't quite work was just enough dialogue just doesn't fit in, resulting in 49 minutes of mostly plodding plot. Later episodes pull off the concept better, in part as they focused in on the threat a little bit better. Just seeing some guy in a white room, with black curtains, near the station - especially without Cocaine - doesn't cut it. For more on White Room and Cocaine, check out Eric Clapton on youtube. Or the Misc/Videos thread as, if I ever see a cool video to accompany some first rate music and vocals, I'll probably plop a post there...

I could feel for Neelix's concerns in "Once Upon a Time," and his relationship with Naomi was well-depicted. Scarlett Pomer made Naomi easy to like.

ENT, Season 4: “Demons” is good on its own but sets up for the best emotional pay off of any ENT episode in "Terra Prime" (which should have been the finale to Enterprise as a whole). I like "Demons" because it finally has ENT explore Earth culture in Trek, which in part puts Archer's bigotry into perspective, and we see the potential firepower of relatively primitive Earth when the Verteron Array is used to fire on the Moon. Pew Pew.

Also, of the episodes I can remember just by name, this is the only one I remember as being genuinely good.

I was curious what the last intact pairing or trio of names would be. And it's the "Eye Of The Beholder's"!

I'll now finally break them up and save the TNG version. That episode wasn't bad, it was an OK hallucinatory-head-trip hour. I didn't mind it. Marina Sirtis overperformed her material, as always.

"DEMON" gets put on my shoulder.

The sequel to the episode is better, but the concept of this one is excellent, and the execution is solid. It gave Kim more to do, and if you think about the ending of "COURSE: OBLIVION", it puts an even more depressing note into his character since he basically was the first duplicate here.

Funny coincidence... both were directed Anson Williams.

I think "Everybody Tells the Truth" would make a better episode. After all, it's the title of an episode of "All in the Family" that's also a hilarious one...

TNG, Season 3: "A Matter Of Perspective"

Gina Hecht was also in this one - remember her from Mork & Mindy?

The holodeck recreating even the technical specifications was a nifty twist...

And, of course, the double facepalm that became an internet sensation a couple decades later! A triple one for where they photoshopped Worf into the same photo disturbingly convincingly.

There was a decent review of the episode but I'll have to dig up the youtube channel later as I can't find it right now. :(

So, because of Discovery’s serialised nature it’s often hard for me to match up the episode title with what happened, so I looked up “The Wolf Inside”, and this was a strong episode; engaging and emotionally compelling. The scene where the Kelpian slave bathes a horrified Burnham was particularly poignant and the Ash/Voq storyline reaches a gut-wrenching climax as she appears to beam him into space (and I actually thought she’d killed him).

As a whole I quite like the Discovery MU arc, though "What's Past Is Prologue" is it's weakest link. It's just so deflating that Lorca's incredibly vast & complicated plan amounts to such a simple, lackluster defeat.

Still, the Disco take on the MU is overall very successful... it managed to freshen it up and modernize it, but also honor the previous visits to the MU. The arc is the highpoint of Disco season 1 for me.

Ooh, I don't know, TAS might be losing its clean record this round....

I'll throw a life preserver to "A Matter of Time," if for no other reason than the irony of watching Picard try to get a (pseudo) time traveler to violate said traveler's own version of the Prime Directive. Shoe pinches on the other foot, doesn't it, Jean-Luc? Though the fact that Rasmussen is ultimately a fake, and therefore couldn't give Picard the information he needed, means that no lessons need be learned.

I saving "THE TIME TRAP".

I thought it was a great concept, and could honestly be used in an episode of a live action series today. Nice tidbit of DS9 making this episode canon, with Kor's ship being name dropped.

(And with that, I have saved an episode from every series except PICARD... someone beat me to that one.)

Of what remains I've only seen the TAS episodes (never even heard of 'Children), and of those I prefer:

TAS, Season 1: "Once Upon A Planet"
It wasn't exactly original, even in the 70s, but the AI turned nemesis I guess was a bit interesting and the Queen of Hearts got to utter that famous line at McCoy.
 that's all I got.

TAS, Season 1: "The Eye Of The Beholder"
ST, Season 2: "Children Of Mars" [spoiler tag your elimination reasons]
ENT, Season 4: "Daedalus"

I haven't seen season two of Short Treks, and I've only ever seen about a third of TAS, so I don't feel that I can make an informed decision, sorry. :)

I'm always a captive audience for zoo stories.

TAS, Season 1: "The Eye Of The Beholder"

It borrows from "The Cage" and lets the Enterprise crew go because they're too intelligent (unlike cats and the lesser bird species that any given cat would pounce on for a cheap fast food happy meal), but they take it in different and new directions. Which isn't to say this story is the go-to for the best use of the trope either; season 1 of TAS had more memorable and original episodes..

What's left (is a 2-way tie acceptable?):

ST, Season 2: "Children Of Mars" [spoiler tag your elimination reasons]
ENT, Season 4: "Daedalus"
