I just noticed The Survivors, so that has to be my next save. A great little mystery, with two great guest characters that had us empathizing with them easily.

I love the powerful final Captain's Log from Picard about Kevin Uxbridge.

Good pick, Seven of Five, "The Survivors" would have been my next choice. instead I'll go for DIS "Brother". It was an excellent start to the second season in my opinion, with just the right balance of character, action and intrigue, setting up the central premise of the season quite nicely. Oh, and Anson Mount's Pike...love at first sight! I also adored Reno, too--awesome addition to the cast, and we need more of her.

I've always felt "The Survivors" was an excellent showcase of Picard's detective ability and why he earned the captaincy.

Someone already beat me to "Remembrance", so my next save is "I, MUDD".

It's a fun episode, and once you realize the absurdity of a few things in the episode and suspend a little disbelief, it actually holds up pretty well compared to a lot of other plots from the same series.

    Eliminating TNG, Season 4: "Brothers".

Well, I think it is safe to say they made Spiner really work for his paycheck for this one, as he had to play three of the protagonists :)

Giving us some more insight and depth into Data's history and background, the foremost reason I remember this one fondly is that, despite that Data is supposed to be unable to experience emotions, it still effectively manages to convey a developing sense of intimacy between Data and his "father". Particularly in the scene where Soong tells Data that he will mourn for him after his death, in his own way. A great Data episode.

"Past Prologue" Garak! It's a pretty satisfying early series set-up ep as well, the dynamics of the crew starting to blend are satisfying -- I love those scenes of Kira trying to report Sisko to the admiral, and her just feeding it right back to Sisko.

And Lursa & B'Etor are always fun to see, even when they're as tacked-on as they are here.

Another great episode from TNG's third season is The Enemy.

I love the three different strands at play here, with my favourite being Worf being adamant that he doesn't want to be a donor for the dying Romulan. It was a gripping episode.

"Remember" was another excellent Torres episode, with some solid work by Dawson -- she did a great job of distinguishing B'Elanna from Karenna, and playing the nuances of each character. And the episode tackled some important questions, about how otherwise "good people" could be swept up into committing and/or condoning horror, and about the importance of owning and acknowledging the failures of the past. Just good stuff all around.

You know, there's all sorts of problems with it, but I'm having a moment of being really drawn to early DS9, and so I will save "Babel." This is also one that I loved as a kid and I can still viscerally access that memory of the first viewing, so I'll let that nostalgic sentiment carry this save...

And there is something kind of fun about "Babel", in just how unformed it still is. It almost feels like an early tie-in product, it's such a sideways angle on what DS9 usually is...

Everyone knows that there'd have been bickering over getting the prize had it not been for Jean-Luc McClane...

    TNG, Season 6: "Starship Mine"

This one almost feels like a TNG movie with its tone and pacing. And so it should; this is another example of TNG going where few have gone before to explore other formats it can try to blend in with its own.

The Enterprise needing some maintenance that requires docking somewhere isn't a bad idea, though not one they could do too often.

Picard given some not inappropriate treatment - using wits and weapons otherwise unusable due to the nature of the cleaning being done - he's not swinging around from hoses affixed to the engine in some laughably bad motif. Then again, it took me a moment but old people doing silly yet unexpected things to startle people aren't too uncommon:

(Social distancing failure aside, that's almost like a live action cartoon except it's fascinating...)

In other words, Picard running around and doing backflips and swinging from cables affixed to engineering equipment and/or Death Star equipment isn't all that implausible anymore. Drat.

And the bonus of Data's handling of "small talk" was magnifique.

Indeed, I went over to a parallel universe where the baddies did run off with the goods and brought back a clip despite Quinn Mallory's protests:

All that said, there's one remaining little issue - a nitpick: The music is, by far, the weak point for this episode, but it doesn't detract too much. For the most part. Jay Chattaway's done some stellar work in previous seasons (and in DS9 too!) but this one's surprisingly dull and stuffy. But the series is still embryonic past its post-Ron Jones period where they wanted elevator muzak to be more engaging than incidental music...

You beat me to it, so I'll stay with the theme of honour and save A Matter of Honor.

We follow the "RULES OF ENGAGEMENT" and save it from this list.

It was interesting seeing a Klingon lawyer who truly looks at the court as another form of battlefield. Another good look into Worf trying to adjust to his new command role.

Plus, good call with the various people looking into the camera while giving their testimony. It made an otherwise simple, overused plot and turned it into something visually engaging.

I rewatched this film a couple of years ago after having not seen it since its release and I absolutely liked it more the second time around. I love some of the plot aspects (cloning and aging) , the villain overall was decent imho, and it was a good film for fans of Data. It also ties in nicely with the new series...

    I'll save Distant Voices next.

I enjoyed delving into Bashir's psyche as he was getting older. I loved how each character represented a different part of him.

Be quick or you'll miss it!

TOS, Season 3: “Wink Of An Eye”

While the plot hole of "the two disparate timeframes are incongruous" since the regular speed timeline runs much shorter and the sped-up timeline instances just have too little content to make up for the elapsed time*, at least the story recognizes it by showing other characters in other scenes as temporal markers.

    * combined with using the "race against time" trope since the real-time people have to stop the Scalosians, who are in accelerated time and have an advantage as a result

I don't recall this trope being done in sci-fi often, if at all before this episode. It's a novel idea.

"Tron" (unlike its sequel!) did write a story that involved disparate time zones and kept continuity straighter.

The episode ends in what's starting to become a trend in season 3 - that of "tragedy scribbled in with a #1 pencil" - as the Scalosians are just abandoned, with quarantine buoys set up. Of course, should a Klingon, Romulan, or Pakled ship ever traipse into the system...

There's also a neat in-joke: Kirk and Deela (as insinuated) are putting their clothes back on just after a commercial break. Back then, commercial breaks were roughly one minute long. Take that what you will.

"The Survivor" I have been really appreciating TAS for the first time in the last month or so, just watched this ep and it's great! It actually works as a love story! Very cool alien design as well, and a fun use of the Romulans.

Saving "Return to Tomorrow," a solid science-fiction story that IMO is the best of what's remaining. There's some real poignancy to the story of Sargon and Thalassa, and a bittersweet resolution that may have made me tear up a bit in my impressionable youth. Diana Muldaur's first role on Trek, and her most sympathetic (as Thalassa; we don't really get to know Mulhall).

    I AM KIROOOOO*cough cough*

TOS, Season 3: "The Paradise Syndrome"

The episode has a certain romanticism, atop yet another season 3 ending that was decidedly not "happily ever after". Possibly not just because season 3 had a shiny new production team and direction but because season 3 was a reactionary to seasons' 1 and 2's too-saccharine approach. It's like Gen-X before Gen-X was cool, man! When it works, it works. When it doesn't, it begs the wrong questions. Here, it works. Phew, does it ever work... over 50 years on and it still sends shivers.

There's some fantastic acting in this episode. BY everyone.

The asteroid being deflected after aborted attempt to destroy as a subplot is pretty epic, especially for season 3's minuscule budget.

Kudos to incorporating the use of consonantal shift, where "Kirk" becomes "Kirok" (albeit via amnesia induction).

The Preservers tie into the beings of TNG's "The Chase" (how all beings share a similar root species that explains the limitations of TV budgets ) and others, and were the first species Trek put out that discussed sentient beings of various traits being relocated for their survival across the cosmos. Overly romantic? Quite so. But it's still a novel and commendable one.

The ending works doubly so because this seems to be one of the few instances where (a) Kirk really comes across being in genuine love (not lust) and sees his love brutally murdered (with unborn child, no less - good gravy, that's massive by 1960s standards and wouldn't be done today either), and (b) it's not Kirk doing his usual "this is how love works" speech followed by getting beamed by Scotty but not in a way some slashfic was pining for. :sigh:

This episode too harks upon the motif "A society that isn't reliant on technology". It's clearly romanticized as anyone living older than 40 would be very few, pneumonia and other ailments and diseases that would lead to death had no cures back then... this is clearly a theme in a number of season 3 stories, of which "The Way to Eden" fumbles around when trying to refute said glossy romanticism and it's a shame.

If only Spock would do his silly Vulcan mind wipe for Kirk in this episode and not the one where he falls for a slinky robut. But if that were the case, we likely wouldn't get one hell of an ending:

This is also far stronger than Kirk's pining over Edith Bunker Keeler, but Keeler was just splattered in a random car accident and as a result the universe was serendipitously saved. I didn't really believe the two were in love either. To compare, Miramanee was brutally murdered and with a child Kirk helped create so there's more than mere implication going on. The acting really sold a genuine love from both characters. And it's amazing how a little change of context can make a much bigger impact.
