Next up in these themed elimination games: EPISODES THAT RECYCLE TITLES

I feel like I have to justify this one, in that most of the list themes relate in some way to the actual content of the episode, whereas this one does not at all. I find it a satisfying framing device anyway (and I hope you all do as well), because one of my favorite things about the Trek canon at this point is the sheer size of it, these hundreds and hundreds of hours over 9 series and counting. And this is a fun way to highlight that size for me, that the universe is already so big that the writers essentially have to give up on always having an entirely-unique title.

And it's a good way to carve out a diverse bunch of episodes into a game-list-size portion, it's one of the few themes to touch every property in the Trekverse -- we've got episodes from all 9 series and some movies in here. There aren't many themes that touch every show, without also being unplayably long.

(And a note on LIST PARAMETERS: any episodes reusing the same titles because they are two-parters or part of a non-consecutive arc [ie "The Naked Time/Now", "The Trouble With Tribbles/Edward", etc] have been excluded)

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below are the Star Trek episodes that recycle the same titling convention, or recycle the exact same title, just plural, or with a 'the' added, etc. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

I'll kick it off with a save for the 2019 Least Disliked winner, DS9's "Emissary." The first Trek show to premiere once I was already a fan, so the first pilot I got to anticipate with great excitement, and it did not disappoint! It's such an epic, vivid introduction to the DS9 world, this pilot is firing on all cylinders. I can basically quibble with Odo's "here's my backstory!" speech, and I have no other complaints. I loved all these characters right away and was just thrilled to get to see more from them.

In fact, I'm excited to turn it on right now, "Emissary" is tonight's Trek middle-of-the-night insomnia viewing...

(Heh, and just realized it's also the first time I noticed any title recycling. I remember getting the title spoiler and, young trivia nerd fan that I was, immediately thinking "they couldn't find something TNG didn't already use?" )

^, oh, for a moment I thought I had read 'the most disliked recycled plot episode' . But I suppose you would have had an unending discussion on your hands in that case...

Eliminating I, Borg. Great episode about a Borg being liberated from the collective that apparently never had been an individual before. Picard had been in the collective for a few days at most and "only" had a challenge in coming to terms with what he'd done as a drone and how they raped him, and Seven at least had her childhood memories, but Hugh seemed to really encounter the concept of individuality for the very first time. Also, this was done before Voyager when the concept was still original.

Also of course an episode with a great moral conundrum for Picard & crew. Should they use this as an opportunity to try to destroy the Borg, or not?

Yay, thanks for another game Sakonna! This one will keep us going a while.

I started scanning for classics, only to find that many of these are fairly middle of the road episodes...IMO the only real classic here is DS9’s “Children of Time”. This one often gets overlooked I think mainly because it’s in latter season five which is uniformly excellent and building to that climatic season finale. Admittedly it feels more like a general Trek episode than a specifically DS9 one, but it’s a great premise and the central moral dilemma is an absolute killer. The characters and their different perspectives are beautifully written and performed, and the guy playing Yedrin Dax does a great, if understated job. It’s just beautifully done, and the Kira/Odo scenes are both affecting and alarming, leading to that painfully awkward and bittersweet closing scene. Some nice location shooting too, even if it looked a tad windy.

You're welcome! And I agree that "Children Of Time" is one of those underappreciated classics, I love that one.

A desire to watch "Far Beyond The Stars" this morning lead me to suddenly realize that should have been on this list... so using this turn to add and then save it (and adding TAS "Beyond The Farthest Star" for someone else to save later -- maybe me, I do like that one...)

As for "Far Beyond The Stars", I do actually think that climactic breakdown from Avery Brooks is a bit overplayed, and otherwise I have no complaints. The atmosphere in this one is just so enticing, the world they create is so lush and vivid, it's one of those that just pulls me in and puts me in a trance. I always did think DS9 had the strongest cast, and they all have great fun with this opportunity to dial into another role for the week.

Professor Gegen is one of the most memorable of all individuals representing an alien species the crew happened upon during their journey. I loved how this episode was told more from Gegen's perspective than any of the crew members and I sympathized with his plight. Unlike many I also like Chakotay and this was a good ep for him as well; overall I consider this to be one of the best VOY eps of the first 3 seasons...(plot holes aside of course).

I feel like I rarely go with TOS for my saves, but I am eliminating "Journey To Babel", which is an absolute TOS highpoint for me. Such a good episode! Introducing relationships so rich, they are still driving story in the franchise today! (Or at least were, last season on Disco)

And visually, I just love the conference and the assembly of different aliens in this one.

The Andorians are so great from the jump. The Tellarites were never better.

I'm going to go for an offbeat choice and save Voyager's "Muse." The exploration of storytelling and the meaning and value of art just did wonderful things for this overage English major's soul. Kelis was endearing, and B'Elanna had a rare focus episode that didn't focus on her being Klingon or angry. I loved this episode.

Ok, I’m gonna save TOS “The Man Trap”. It wasn’t the greatest episode ever made, but as the first aired episode of Star Trek it changed the world. I just rewatched it a few days ago and it’s a decent little story with a suitably eerie, unsettling vibe. The maturity of Star Trek’s storytelling and ethos is immediately apparent. Far from simply a ‘monster of the week‘, the creature is depicted in a sympathetic and tragic light; it’s the last of its kind and isn’t doing what it’s doing because it’s “Evil”, but because it’s simply trying to survive.

Shatner is great to watch in The Enemy Within, which is my first save. Being split into two people, and then trying to cope without the other half, is a wonderful premise, and the producers exploit it well.

It's also fun to see a Star Trek before they invented the shuttlecraft, anxiously leaving the away team on the planet whilst the crew work out what is going on.

This episode is a new sentimental favorite for me, I didn't like it much until last year, when I watched it with a family member who'd never seen it, and we both found it hilarious and laughed the whole time. The highlight of this list for me is "First Contact". An excellent look at a 24th century first contact mainly from the contactees point of view. The rather disquieting beam in of Picard and Troi to Mirasta Yale's lab made for an intriguing and gripping start and everything that happened thereafter just added to episode (with a nice bit of humour in Lanel's lust for "captured alien" Riker). Carolyn Seymour, as always, was perfect as Yale.

Well, I will save the other First Contact, then! The best of the TNG movies, FC had a strong plot, some great action, and real emotional resonance, especially for Picard. Stewart was the standout and star, of course, but everyone in the core cast had something to do. Not to mention the great guest stars: James Cromwell, Alfre Woddard, and Alice Krige.

Saving "BLINK OF AN EYE".

One of my favorite episodes of VOYAGER. Excellent concept and execution. Joe Menosky, as usual, did an excellent job with this episode.

It's one of THE best Treks of any incarnation. They took a neat concept from "Wink of an Eye", innovated on it in enough ways to make it its own (and then some), and even didn't commit the plot hole the original had (the deviation between the two disparate timelines, normal vs accelerated, don't add up).

"Second Skin" Kira episodes were usually highlights, and this one was no exception. Nana Visitor acts the hell out of this one, as always, and the results are fantastic. A great Cardassian and Garak episode as well.

Remember Me is a real highlight in season for of TNG for me. Crusher gets to be the star, which doesn't happen very often. It was good to see The Traveller reunited with Wesley as well.

There are some really funny moments as well. "If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe!"
