As for Lwaxana, I'm not a massive fan of her, but he really has her moments of sincerity in her better episodes, which I always preferred to the more outlandish part of her.

Saving "For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky" - the idea of a space ship disguised as an asteroid is pretty cool and that the inhabitants don't know they are on a space ship. I'm sure there must be a lot of science fiction stories along these lines. TOS does this story well and it's good fun.

In a story that's all sorts of "fail", many of the lesser-talked successes involve Nurse Chapel - she is seen doing the legwork in getting Uhura back to ranks, as well as taking a big part in dealing with Scotty after he's hauled onto the sickbay bed. Neither is not her biggest moment in the show, but is definitely one of the more important ones. You don't see that often in TOS with anyone who's not "The Big Three".

The Menagerie was an ingenious idea to reuse footage from The Cage, whilst telling a story viewers wouldn't have seen by that point. Spock's loyalty to Pike in these episodes is great to see.

The Talosians were another interesting alien, too.

She even saves the day in a way that Troi could not.

The scene cut made me feel bad for Lwaxana upon Picard telling her what the holodeck was about... but a few seconds later she figures out the assassins with aplomb. And hell yeah, she steals the show.

And, yes, we know that Fleetwood Mac's music is "the bomb", but not at that conference...

(Granted, the Tarellians had a background worthy of more explanation, but the fact they got as much as they had in there is enough... and Lwaxana adds needed charm (and levity) to the episode as well...)

Seasons 1 and 2 have aged far better for me, even with the growing pains. S2 was almost perfect to begin with. It's sad that TNG-R had let a separate entity do a rush job on remastering because they wanted to belch out all 7 seasons as quickly as possible. Season 4 was passable, but season 2 was a mess. (though in fairness, some original SD problems were even fixed in the HD process, even if the HD release made a couple new ones, and the bulk of issues are in the f/x rather than live action film and having grown up on cheap BBC sci-fi, it's not as much of a disappointment to see rough f/x, but TNG went the extra mile to make their episodes to look as posh as possible so why not give them the same loving remastering treatment...)

This is a tight, exciting episode, one of my favorites of TAS, and far superior to "The Immunity Syndrome."

Saving "The Lorelei Signal." Shame that the first time we saw a woman in command on the Enterprise was when all the males were literally incapable of the job -- but the female officers and crew did make a fine showing, didn't they? Uhura and Chapel were cool and in charge, and the mini-skirted security guards more than capable. As an adolescent girl the first time I saw the episode, I found it empowering.

* And why not? He keeps saying how he's going to run out of samples (yet never does!), just as much as all of the 47 episodes where he laments on how all the good things were inwented by widdly owd wadies in Wenningwad (the typical season 2 joke)...

The same episode inspired a far more innovative take on the rapid aging trope, the by-far superior "Unnatural Selection" but even evolution has a starting point and "The Deadly Years" is such a case in that regard.

but the female officers and crew did make a fine showing, didn't they? Uhura and Chapel were cool and in charge, and the mini-skirted security guards more than capable. As an adolescent girl the first time I saw the episode, I found it empowering.

"The Ambergris Element" is trippy fun and a great example of using animation to push beyond what they could have achieved in live action.

It is also truly hysterical how many characters (five!) she's voicing in that one.

Also, Kirk & Spock possibly having to spend the rest of their time on the Enterprise in a water tank together feels like the premise of some extremely weird & inventive slash fanfic.

What is "The Enterprise Incident" still doing here? Shatner delivers a fantastic unhinged performance in the first half, before we see him don the Romulan disguise (classic!). Nimoy likewise delivers a standout performance as he falls in love(maybe?) with the Romulan Commander. Usually Trek's one episode long romances fall flat for me but this one works, especially that final scene in the turbolift between them. Oh yeah and I almost forgot: the 1701 cloaks! How fun is that! Top-shelf TOS in my opinion.

Possibly a little early in the game for this one, but meh, I'll be at work later. Saving "The Magicks of Megas-Tu." I have always appreciated the audacity of Kirk defending a character believed to be the literal Devil -- the character being presented as defendable was bold for the era too! And those psychedelic color bursts are the most 70s thing ever.
