Game The Most Disliked Majel Barrett Appearance

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: In honor of this weeks resurrection of two Majel Barrett characters on "Strange New Worlds" -- below is a list of TOS, TAS, TNG, & DS9 in which Majel Barrett appears. (The only exclusions are episodes where she is only the Computer Voice, as that would make the list waaaaaaaaaaaay too long)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

- This is the first Star Trek episode that I remember watching when I was a child, and it scared me silly! For years afterwards (before I became a fan), whenever anyone would talk about Star Trek and Klingons, I thought that they were referring to the parasites because they 'cling on' to people

TOS Feature: "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" is an easy first save for me as it's my second favourite ST film (although, Chapel barely features in it, unfortunately).

I loved Operation: Annihilate! It really earnt the exclamation point, and I too loved it as a kid. Those parasites, and Kirk losing his family, really stuck with me as a kid. Weird kid, I know.

I'll go with Half a Life, which is probably my favorite Lwaxana episode on TNG.

Her first is one of the best, since all the episodes of her as the computer voice can't count :

Confident, strong, big 70s 80s 50s 60s hair... her reaction of combined surprise/glare/taken aback to Pike when he says he's not used to it:

PIKE: She does a good job, all right. It's just that I can't get used to having a woman on the bridge. No offence, Lieutenant. You're different, of course.

Crass by any standard, clunky by 1964's -- but at the same time is also trying to push the boundaries to get beyond ridiculous notions that women cannot command*. Arguably, Pike isn't representing all captains, but may have not served with one. As Kirk would remind Styles in "Balance of Terror", he should keep his prejudice in his quarters. Had Pike's version of TOS got green-lit, we'd see this aspect improve considerably. Then again, we'd also lose out on Spock becoming unemotional and not shouty or with impish glee upon fondling alien plant leaves...

I recall reading that the suits did not like the idea of a woman in command*, but some also claimed Majel is not good at "leading characters". Whether or not that's true is moot, since the show gave the impression of being ensemble - albeit with most emphasis on the captain. The claim she was not a leading character actor doesn't hold up and to be honest, she was excellent in the role. That said, it's also been claimed that she and Gene were oinking** and the studio did not like it when any producer was bringing in anyone they were oinking** with, and that was the real reason #1 was disliked, hence Gene sneaking her back with a blonde wig... for the show, not necessarily as a fetish for oinking**. I wasn't there so it's only reflecting based on what was read. Now compound that over centuries and who knows what real history was like 4000 years ago when the Babylonian empire was getting busy**. The Amorites had it goin' on**, amirite***?

Note that the Talosions nailed it regarding their description of her. That's a compliment and, for once, has nothing to do with postscript-two below (**). While a tad clunky, the idea she is keeping a stern, stoic outer hard shell but keeps emotions contained is pretty much true for all people, or else we never would have gotten out of the caveman stage. By 1964 standards, showing the sheer opposite of the known stereotype was a big thing and novel enough to be a strong selling point. Though "Doctor Who" already did this for Barbara Wright, a show the Trek makers couldn't have possibly known about at the time, had "The Cage" been green-lit, we wouldn't have had Spock but fans would have adored Number One for the identical reasons. Then again, we wouldn't have had articles like this one. Do give it a full read, it's a piece of historical significance that's worth every syllable and more...

* the pilot being rejected being one of the influences for "Turnabout Intruder"'s scenes where it's said Starfleet does not employ women in command (in a very messy script, but that's another story...)

** substitute "oinking" with "copulating", "getting busy", et al, if preferred

*** that is not a word, but a slang amalgamation of a phrase that looks cuter than the teddy bear one had a kid

She's effing awesome in all three stories you'd mentioned. Not sure whether Menage or Half-A-Life is stronger, probably the latter, but she proves she can carry a show easily enough in those, assuming the suits from sixty-four were still watching...

For the sheer spectacle and new look to Trek, I'm saving "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". Its success paved the way for more films, and its design language can be seen in Star Trek to this very day! I can take or leave the carbon units, though (although Chapel was pretty awesome in the small role she served).

OK, the part with Chapel making Spock his soup is just god-awful.
Sadly, Chapel was often a thankless role.
But turning the premise of logical Vulcans on its head by giving them a savage mating ritual was utterly brilliant.
McCoy's solution to the problem was also quite inspired.
And, thanks in no small part to Futurama, the fight music has entered our culture.

It's easily the best Nurse Chapel episode of the entire TOS run, and it's a great little sci-fi episode in its own rite. One of my under-rated favorites for sure.

I have "Operation -- Annihilate!" on right now, and damn does it still play fantastically.

I love how many Lwaxana episodes have gone already! I'm a big Lwaxana fan, and it often feels like I'm the only one.

But instead of saving one those next, I'll instead go with "The Slaver Weapon", which is a favorite TAS of mine. I'm glad Trek can use the Kzinti again! I do also love Majel's voice work as the title character.

This ep is also particularly beloved by me for benching Kirk, McCoy, and Scotty for the week. Uhura and Sulu are favorites of mine, and it was great to see them sharing the focus with Spock without any of the usual marquee names getting in the way.

Obsession is a massively under-rated TOS episode. I think it's a lot of fun, and has a really creative "creature" that is a pretty terrifying sci-fi concept aside from just being "ugly creature of the week."
