TOS Season 3: "Elaan Of Troyius"

Klingon guile is worthy of TNG's Romulans in this one, though they used guile in "Friday's Child" when they drew the Enteprise away as well.

The space battle at the end with approaches from warp 4 loses its luster, but has its moments as Enterprise is a sitting duck.

Elaan is definitely well-portrayed, but it's a cliché by now that Kirk can overcome any ailment by his wuv of his shwip.

Jay Robinson also has a field day with his role.

Not the best story, but has a decent use of Klingons and somehow remains generally watchable even in its lowest moments.

"Apocalypse Rising" has wall-to-wall Klingons, many of them Our Heroes in disguise. There's a little twist at the end, and the Klingons become allied to the Federation in the matter of the Dominion War - a point which is important for the rest of the run. Pretty good fun too.

Saving "THE SWORD OF KAHLESS".

Kor was always awesome to have around, and I really like this quest.

My favorite thing about this is that the Sword had no weird effect that caused Worf and Kor to act like they did... it was simply a, for lack of a better term, religious relic that just brought out the worst traits in both of them. It would have been an easy out for the writers to just have a scifi trick that made the sword do that to others, but they chose the more realistic one... icons like that can simply be a source of bringing out the worst in us just by virtue of its existence.

This sort of illustrates why DS9 was so excellent... it doesn't rely on the scifi tropes and tricks to say what they want to say about a character or their mitivations. They just utilize it as a tool, not make it the entire reason something happens to them. And we get better stories because of this.

Mental conditioning, the shadowy figure, the plot to assassinate, it's like Star Trek VI -- but different!

Apart from another assassination goal, the Klingons are barely in this one. Others I'd rather save, but this one gets the tone and flow right and remains engaging, despite being spoonfed enough of the plotting upfront.

Geordi's given up on real relationships so he's off to the humplanet to catch some jiggy-induced cooties, which no longer exist because those were dealt with before "the common cold" was (thank you Wesley). Romulans show up at just the worst possible time - at least for Geordi - as he's otherwise trying to recite, in alphabetical order, more Treknobabble than would have ever been conceived in so many seconds, so for us the audience it's the best possible time:

So anyway, Nanclus was the shadow figure in TUC, in TNG we've got... Sela. Reminds me of a mattress, but nobody knows what a snoozefest she'll become in a nondescript number of episodes' time. Here she is, kept in the dark so we remain in the dark, and voice altered just enough so that it's not obvious that it's Denise returning for a new role that should have been so much better in later episodes.

Unlike Saavik Valeris, Cartwright, Chang, Colonel West (first and middle name: N. Adam, for which the N stands for Nanananana), this time it's probably just the Romulans conniving, but looking at the 1991 flick that came out long after this story, who's to say that Nanclus didn't giggle "hehehehehehe" while winding up the Federation and Klingons? (As if it were needed, anyhow.)

Hmmm, we were told how season 5 would have direct tie-ins to TUC. I think this episode does a better job of that, without even knowing it.

Amazing how much of the ship's interior the Romulans do know, regarding their mindwarping of Geordi. (Or did the shuttle taken have a full complement of blueprints?) It's not as egregiously numb as "The Defector"'s example of where Data blaps on and on and on (and on) about how they know virtually nothing of Romulus but, seconds later, programs the Hollydeck there to show, in clearly perfect detail since Setal froths and drools over it in sheer awe, the Valley of Chula and ♪ woomp there it is ♫.

I'm amazed that the next story - correct me if I'm misremembering - didn't accelerate their machinations because, as Data wouldn't say, "the jig was up". Maxwell Smart might, however.

There's a lot of things wrong with "Will You Take My Hand?", but I loooooooooooove the world-building they do on Qo'noS. That Orion district is one of the coolest things Disco ever did, and I rewatch this ep quite a bit just for that, despite the story being largely a mess.

That last shot in the Orion district especially, in the pre-dawn, with Tyler saying goodbye to Burnham and then walking off down the alley... so good. Disco really knew how to nail the romanticism.

We'd see some of this re-done in "The Way of the Warrior", but it seems more effective in this one - at least for the gimmick. It's not the gimmick but the payoff in "The Way of the Warrior" is far more interesting...

Amazing Toral still doesn't understand that there are "Prime" reasons the Federation left, despite whining earlier about the Federation allegedly wanting to meddle in their affairs? Nope, this is a Klingon story of all Klingon stories and the humans were never involved.

Also, ooh, it's Denise Crosby in a dual role! Best three months ever to wait in finding out why and it's a really ingenious one. Shame they'd drop the ball later on, but for one shining moment that had something really cool. If it wasn't cool, or any reason given, how many audiences of 1991 would accept "same actor, different role" that was still not uncommon throughout the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, and so on? (TNG has a few other examples and no "connect the dots" was attempted. Or needed to be. The realization of Sela HAD a reason and it's a dang great one. But I'm jumping ahead...)

Saving "RULES OF ENGAGEMENT".

It was shot extremely well, being the first time we get characters talking TO the camera while on the witness stand. It made the story flow better and feel more alive. LeVar Burton proved he is one of the best STAR TREK actors-turned directors of the bunch.

Plus, it made the Klingons more devious and cunning, more like how they were in TOS.
