Game The Most Disliked Klingon Episode/Movie, 2025 Edition

In "Day of the Dove" we get a nice example of enemies working together to defeat a threat. Those Klingons might be sneaky and dishonorable but they aren't stupid.

Beat me to it, woohoo!

Here's my version of the save:

As some might say, having two in the hand makes a gooey mess:

TOS Season 3: “Day Of The Dove”

Never mind the bush they're cooing on, which will probably bloom brighter next spring as a result.

So, the unknown space swirlie thing enemy lives off the emotions of other beings. Did it originate on this planet they were visiting, or do they live in nebulae and only go to planets out of abject boredom (but for now, I'm keeping it focused to being a terrestrial life form for now)? Is it a rogue? Just vacationing where there's not even a hotel? Last of its species? Even "Skin of Evil" provided a solid backstory to explain the alien fritter while leaving more open-ended (the discharge of a large and otherwise nondescript species believing that shedding all its evil would make it better, interestingly...), yet this is just one swirly thing in space that is red when feeding and pale when it's starving. Nice detail, my next rewatch I'll pay attention and see if that trait is consistent...

More, if there is a home planet loaded with tons of swirly things and you went to vacation there, which one would want to take you in the most and why? Which one would you want interfering with your thoughts to make you act out? The one that feeds off of hate, or happiness, or jealousy, or greed, or people who keep writing the word "shrimp fork" incessantly, or what? Even more fun, if this were a Phase II script, would they all go all disco and strip and jiggy as a result? Inquiring minds don't want to know. But did all these fritters die out because they fought each other and now opted to seek out other life forms and strange new worlds as a warped parody and, indeed, how do these swirly gasbags travel faster than light? There's a difference between some open-endedness and actual vagueness, but let's put all that to the side:

Nice exposition for anyone tuning in at just that precise moment, too. Superb music, applied with care, and a first-rate performance from DeForest Kelley. The story is loaded with terrific set-pieces and acting from all, as well as going quite far for 60s TV, but as this naturally involves the "most disliked", I've still got to put in something dislikedable and nitpickery. (the most-liked, to compare, I'd have to refrain from being nitpickery and just praise it. The story's worth a lot of praise, regardless, nitpicking can be done out of trying to fill in the missing pieces, mentioning something out of disappointment, and a slew of other possible reasons. I mean, "Oi, we're out of anchovy ice cream with gerbil-flavored topping, so now I need to gripe, grrr!!!" is an actual reason used by, at least if not by most, 0.000000000125% of the population, possibly...)

The TOS-R CGI of adding in the Klingon ship with smaller explosions is a very nice touch. Also, at 0:49 in, are those bright pink feathers taken from a burlesque show and plonked into a bit of styrofoam? We've seen the flamingo frills in previous episodes, just not as incessantly as any given episode of "Lost in Space". Which is okay, Trek has reused props before and nobody really cared as much because the scripting was more often really good. Which wouldn't stop people from noticing and, being sci-fi at the time, it was far more costly as sets and props could almost never be reused due to being so iconic. I think "Mork & Mindy" got away with as much as they could, solely because it was 11 years later and had fans other than Trek fans so nobody would notice the modified Col. Green outfit, the spacesuit from "The Tholian Web", the large egg that Cap. Kirk didn't sit on, and so on.

Also, the alien has a neat practical effect, filming water going down a bathtub drain and superimposing it over the live action...

Lastly, Kang realized when he ran out of gerbil:

Amazingly, the swirlie couldn't tell that Kang was faking it and projecting a really hard slap. Now it's a two-parter, whoops! Well, not really, the fritter knew the crystals would be depleted and would then leave and find another host at another hotel anyhow.

In terms of just the Klingons' intent or ideas therein, a few cross my mind. There are a few that also focus on Kirk or others but include Klingons, but for me for now it's just about the Klingons. Having to balance these, either as ideas and/or how they are executed, can be a pain at times. That, or it's when I look at the list and which one really comes to mind at the time. Or all of that. All that must have been painful to read, so speaking of pain:

TOS Feature: "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"

may stumble on the execution, BUT it's got some great ideas that are worthy OF exploration and are almost proto-DS9 in some ways:

1. We have a rogue Klingon, acting outside of his government, thinking it'd be a real thrill to kill Kirk. This has much potential on multiple levels and we're given only a glimpse. The movie crammed in a lot of ideas, which - along with the comedy - led to its flopping in the box office. Then again, given the new movies out in 1989, I doubt any Trek movie would have bested them as TWOK and its sequels had already been played out, and TNG was being given the "serious" treatment with verisimilitude and all. Sybok managing to mindwarp all of them is also an interesting point.

2. We have a grumpy Klingon commander of a station of what was supposed to be a planet of galactic peace, which failed because nobody involved gave a damn, and/or other possible reasons. This is DS9 arc fodder long before there was a DS9 and the movie went in other directions instead, some arguably needless or superficial, leaving some plot potential unexplored. Indeed, there's almost a prequel where some actual creativity could really explore why all three sides' gave up or otherwise.

3. And then we have Vixis. People love Vixis! Everyone digs Vixis! What's not to like about Vixis! Well, maybe the name because it is reminiscent of Venison or Vixen or something but that's not important right now, but imagine a spinoff called "Vixis". Really. With some lyrics like "♪ and then there's Vix ♫", sponsored by menthol-flavored soothing rub for your respiratory ailment, what's not to like!

Obviously, the comedy and the attempts at it are a huge letdown. The script sometimes feels rushed. It not prioritizing much except for the big "Sybok reads The Big Three's brains" is a huge letdown. All of a sudden, Spock has a family tree sprouting out of nowhere, but Laurence Luckinbill does portray him extremely well, but still. Uhura and Scotty is another cool idea but, as with most of this movie, the prioritization and depth needed for all of these elements to really work went the other direction (think 135 mark 235), at warp nine point nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine nine two four seven.

So, yes, it's flawed, but it does have potential so it's not just a banal inane dumb and other adjective-laden mess, and it does recapture the flair of the 60s TV show - something people would not have expected at the time as they were used to the big movie feel.

(And, yup, in later saves I will explain my weighting a bit more. Or a few bytes more, maybe a kilobyte if the word count needs it...)

I'm not really a fan of Klingons in general, but there are certain individuals who I do have time for - Ma'ah and his brother Malor from LDS: "A Farewell To Farms", for example. I love this episode as it's one of a few that show a side to the Klingon culture that we don't often see - something other than the Warrior types, as well as Klingons being rather dismissive of the warrior lifestyle. Plus Malor is adorable! :klingon: :adore:

For many years, the only episodes of TAS that I owned were on the tape with "More Tribbles, More Troubles". It's a very derivative episode but you can never have too many tribbles falling on Captain Kirk.

Saving "Subspace Rhap...

No, I can't even tell that joke with a straight face.

"THE HOUSE OF QUARK" gets saved. It had a great A and B story.

Not only does Sisko shine as a great leader in his talk with O'Brien, but it's a great example of why their marriage was so realistic. Plus, Bashir offered some truly adult, great advice.

And the Quark/Grilka story was just AWESOME!

Bonus greatness: Quark explaining finances to the High Council. That NEVER stops being funny.

~ Phew! Because I wanted to save "Subspace Rhapsody"! :D

I LOVE this musical episode!! I love that SNW did something different, and the way the musical elements came about made sense to me. And even though it seemed light and fluffy, there were some real serious, emotional beats - Spock's "I'm the X", for instance :adore:

I also would have saved "Subspace Rhapsody" next. Along with "wej Duj" that I already saved, another instant classic of the modern era.

Next I'll save SNW "The Broken Circle", for doing an incredible job repairing the shambles that the Klingons had been left in by Discovery. Spock getting wasted with Klingons, so good.

All of TNG season 1 & 2 is almost impossible for me to resist, so saving "Heart Of Glory." It sets up so much of what the Klingons are today.

Though fortunately someone thought better of keeping Kling as the name of the Klingon homeworld.

It was a blink and you'll miss it appeance from the Klingons here, but the ship's destruction in the beginning added a sense of forboding regarding the V'Ger threat.
@Farscape One has always argued for having this one on the list because it's the debut of the modern Klingon look, and I always thought the appearance was too brief to put TMP on, until suddenly this year I felt it HAD to be there. :bolian:
Tacking into the Wind is a pretty epic episode, especially as we saw Worf killing the man he used to support back in the day back on TNG.
I love that it's killings committed by Worf that are responsible for not one but two successive Chancellors. He must have such an interesting entry in the Klingon history books.

I'm saving my favourite Trek movie, “Star Trek III: The Search For Spock” (It would have been my first save but I didn't realise it was in the list - must have skimmed past it. Oops!) TSFS along with TVH are what got me into Trek and made me a fan. The cast are all brilliant, the world building epic, and the emotional stakes & humour are easy to get caught up in. I love it!
Plus: Klingons with pig-tails :klingon::D

Beat me to it! I do love this movie, but I do love picking nits and this one does have a few... (if this were talking out the least-favorite in a most-favorite list, I'd have to be only positive, eschewing nitpickery.)

My original save entry follows:

As someone once said, in another tv show, "Search, search, search for the truth". So my next save isn't exactly the greatest show in the galaxy, but...

TOS Feature: “Star Trek III: The Search For Spock”

But it's not without its moments, despite not having much to it -- there's virtually no story to this sequel, even though it starts the TOS movie "Klingon Intrigue Arc" that culminated a few movies later, warts and all. So, as with TFF, it's got seeds that might have sprouted contest-winning contests later on as a result.

So this flick has Klingons in it. Why Klingons? Why not the Kelvins, Platonians, the return of the First Federation via the Fesarius, or even the Scalosians? Or Platonians? Why not that obscure species of dustmite that became sentient and now wants terraforming technology? Could be anybody. If nothing else, they're distinctly bad again, unlike their presence in TMP (for which their use is closer in feel to TFF, in some ways).

At least it wasn't Khan popping out of the planet... Originally, the flick was to have Romulans but then someone said it should be about Klingons, and they weren't wrong. Meanwhile, had it not been for "The Enterprise Incident" citing how the Klingons and Romulans had traded technology along with that raisin bread recipe, now the Klingons have ships also donning that bird feather motif because Klingons are obviously that cool, saving the real designs for their uniforms, and a long time ago one of them tried gluing feathers onto to their arms and the glue melted off but that's another story.

The movie is really about returning to the last-minute script adjustment in TWOK where Spock says "remember" and manages to upload his personality into hapless McCoy's soft'n'squishy part since most people don't use 90% of their brain's potential and you know that, somewhere, Spock would make a quip about McCoy being primitive (he did so in TOS, such as in "I, Mudd".) So Spock uploads, dies, now we have to return. It's actually ingenious and yet, it's got some problems that are more than just excessive kneeslap comedy:

So Kirk pretty much risks everything to fetch the corpse, who is now rejuvenated and walking around on a planet that shouldn't be, but would be if the Genesis Device were detonated on an actual planet as intended as opposed to a teensy starship loaded with radioactive and toxic elements that were well outside of the experiments but, no worries, we'll devote shaming Dr Marcus for 15 minutes by an equally obtuse Saavik who refuses to recognize she's comparing apples to giraffes while being impressively haughty for a Vulcan. Sheesh, it amazingly wouldn't have been as much a stretch as all that if Khan had popped out and said "Yoohoo!", instead of finding an antagonistic faction wanting this torpedo technology that is referred to not by Carol's original recording stolen by a re-recording said by Kirk.

Not to mention, the Enterprise has really hi-def recording gear in Engineering. Makes DS9 look even better as a result.

For all of TFF's issues, Saavik berating David in TSFS is far, far stupider. Especially when all the shiny new ideas involving transwarp, protomatter, et al, aren't used ever again. Amazed the Borg, when assimilating some Federation databanks, never used any of it upon learning of it, or didn't need to, though it did create transwarp conduits -- suggesting their attempted assimilation of humanity had some value to them as a result. Oh ish, that's small universe syndrome fluff talking so let me get back on track like a choo-choo:

David is murdered because, well, Kruge needs to be seen as even more bad than already so, and as the plot armor is stronger with neophyte Spock and Valeris, I mean Saavik, what's left is just his kid -- and that ups the ante. Even more so, as Kirk still offers Kruge a helping hand as the Federation was not going to use this as a weapon. Only when Kruge now wants to drag down Kirk is Kirk finally fed up. This is a pretty huge scene that almost makes up for a lot of this movie's problems.

TFF has better ideas, but nitpicks aside, TSFS is executed far better. That said, TSFS fumbles a major plot point for the sake of fishy drama, villainizing David for no reasonable reason at all.

He ain't no friend of mine. He's my luver, and as such he's also:

TNG Season 3: "The Enemy"

They say modern Trek nicks from other movies and things but, yep, TNG and shows before it all did the same thing. Apparently, TNG's "The Enemy" is influenced by "Enemy Mine".

To be fair, this episode paves the way for the even better "The Defector", which is shown like a mere two weeks later, and Geordi and Bochra have a great releationship building. Kinda like the premise for Star Trek Voyager only this one somehow succeeds and in far less time. I still can't fathom how...

But I have one nitpick (studio audience: "Naaaaaaaaw, really?"):

The plot's contrivance to ensure that ONLY Worf could be a blood doner is so idiotic that it ranks up there with some of season 5's gems... Nope, a direct sibling species somehow has too many bio-rejection issues and differences that can't be filtered out, yet this other species that has a vastly different biological structure is somehow more compatible. While some ribosomes are compatible across different species in real life here on Earth, you're always better off getting another human part when possible, since you don't want your immune system trying to attack the replacement substance. The script even confirms it:

CRUSHER: Different species, yes. But many humanoids have comparable cell structures.

Yet Vulcans don't. Yeah, right.

One Romulan is given a name that is also used as a curse word thanks to the follow-up story "The Defector": Patahk. So Trekkies, please don't do your kids any attempts at favors by naming them "Hell" or "Damn" or-- (insert record skip scratch noise here*) and if you think I'm spelling out any other four-letter words, only a Veruul would do that... or Zuul. There is only Zuul when you think about it...

All of TNG season 1 & 2 is almost impossible for me to resist, so saving "Heart Of Glory." It sets up so much of what the Klingons are today.

Heck yeah!

DC Fontana's script is imaginative and in so many ways.

The scene with Geordi's VISOR is so good that it's not difficult to overlook the fact they're testing it in what is a situation requiring urgency.

The Klingons are well-realized and there is this amazing aura of mystique that was never recaptured. I could rewatch this a hundred times, unlike stories that forgot Geordi's VISOR had too many useful but otherwise plot-ending abilities. And yet "Heart of Glory" uses the VISOR to genuinely great effect, once the show'n'tell is done. That's why we need Geordi on more away teams, he can see microscopic detail, heat and radiation emanations that nobody around him can. Among scores of other reasons.

The death howl was ingenious, as is the minute sound echo added.

The verisimilitude of the piece really shines through. Yep, that's my new word for the week, since "gravitas" sounds like the name of a nougat candy bar where you're chewing into it, it seems tasty, but then all your tooth fillings get yanked out because it's too chewy and it's all gross and stuff.

Though fortunately someone thought better of keeping Kling as the name of the Klingon homeworld.

I wish the name had clung... or, rather, Klung... there we go... or maybe not... I'm really not sure what's worse, augmenting the planet's name to recognize the dominant species, or playing "fourth wall phonetics" as "Qo'Nos" is pronounced like "Chronos" and ties not only into all the Shakespeare of TUC, but also that movie's themes of time running out, forging a peace, etc, etc. Given the spelling, I'll go with "Qo'Nos" as "Kling" isn't great and since we're not called "Earthers" or "Earthlings" anymore and our planet isn't called "Humanidity" or anything just as dumb, no - we just call it the same thing we call dirt: "Earth". Hey, that's what we can call people: "Earthworms". :shifty:  Well, maybe not... :guffaw:

Saving A Matter of Honor. This set the structure for many Klingon episodes in TNG and DS9, what it was like to serve in a command structure of a different culture. It was also a great fish out of water story. My opinion about the resolution has shifted over time: it just seems like too big of a loophole for the Klingon military not to have figured out. It's still cool.

A Klingon-centric story that's pretty great is:

TNG Season 2: “A Matter Of Honor”

Wesley's comment about Benzites notwithstanding, or the dumb comment about subatomic bacteria, which makes no technical sense unless it's bacteria made up of subatomic particles-- meh, the line is acted so well, in an episode acted so well, that I can't nitpick too much.

An inverse of this episode would appear in season 3, introducing Worf's brother and, in turn, TNG's equivalent to "Dynasty's Draugr"*, "Dallas in the Dumbbell Nebula", "The Colbys in the Coal Sack", "Melrose Place in Space', etc.

Naturally, the food/dinner scenes, on both Enterprise and the P'ah, are top notch. Great stuff.

Definitely a highlight of season 2, proving TNG had largely found its footing after an experimental season 1, which isn't as consistently terrible as some claim, but definitely can be uneven at times. It's easy to defend and does have a charm of its own...

* Draugr, a term from Norse/Scandanavian mythology and adapted into some sweet sweet video games, involving dead warriors coming back to life to terrorize the living (moohahaha)...

GAAAH, JUST NOTICED, NINJA'ED! LOL
