Game The Most Disliked Holodeck Episode

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of Holodeck episodes from the eight series that have used the convention. (Specifically Federation holodecks & Quark's holosuites. Alien holo-tech is on a different list)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

And "Hollow Pursuits" is the first to go! I loved the lushness of the holographic fantasy and laughed at the send-ups of our series regulars (especially the Goddess of Empathy and pint-size Riker). But I'd vote to save this episode even if it had nothing else going for it besides being the episode that introduced one of my favorite Trek recurrers, the endearingly neurotic Reg Barclay.

The quality varies wildly on this list! I'll go with TNG's early classic, 11001001, ss the Bynaurs were such a fascinatingly alien race. Riker trying out the holodeck and meeting Minuet was such a Riker thing that it always makes me smile.

[Farscape One]

There are 3 episodes on this list that I would immediately save because I love them immensely.

The first is "OUR MAN BASHIR". It was BRILLIANT! It took the trope of the 'holodeck gone wrong' without it actually going wrong. GENIUS!

And as a James Bond fan, this was just a joy to watch. Mona Luvsit! Honey Bare! Dr. Noah! Bashir... Julian Bashir!

And having Garak in this just tops it all off. I can honestly say I have probably rewatched this episode more than any in the entire franchise.

I'm going to go with a fun one, LDS: "I, Excretus" - I love Lower Decks, and this episode was another brilliant use of the lower decks set-up. Boimler running his scenario over and over again (and saving many, many Borg babies) to get 100%, and then having to sacrifice his score to keep the crew together just shows how awesome he can be (Rutherford is still my favourite, though)!
Oh, and Mariner getting trampled by that horse - hilarious!

I seem to be on a strange Voyager wave in this battle, but the next I would save is Author, Author. Any Voyager episode becomes immediately better with Robert Picardo at the centre of it. The EMH is a masterful creation and Author Author really gives Picardo a chance to shine in his perfectly tragicomic way.

You should watch "Fair Haven", which I am saving next for being a deeply moving tale of love--

Just kidding! I recently rewatched "Fair Haven," and I would only wish that on my two worst enemies. I'm actually going to save Prodigy's "Kobayashi", which truly is the ultimate holodeck episode.

Did I go nuts when the legacy characters started populating the Enterprise bridge! What better use of the holodeck could there be? On a technical level, it goes awry in the final scene between Spock and Dal, but I still respect the effort. And everything before that blew me away with how well done the integration of the old audio clips was.

It makes me really glad we have a partially animated and partially live action franchise now. You can do such great universe-expanding things in animation that you could just never do in live action.

Quite a few of my favourites have already been saved. I'm saving Once Upon A Time. Naomi's reaction when she finds out Neelix has been lying to her is so believable. Samantha Wildman isn't a main character so they actually could have chosen to have her die in this episode.

I'm going to save DS9 Season 7: “Take Me Out To The Holosuite”, because I went into it expecting to hate it and somehow loved it. It's the kind of story that could be told on any series and my interest in baseball is somewhere between zero and none, but it was nice to see the characters hanging out together outside of work together and they got the comedy right.

"Pathfinder" is an episode I find deeply moving. And it's also extremely clever -- it's such a smart way to get all the Voyager cast onto this Earth-set episode, making holographic recreations of them as Barclay's only friends.

The relapse is so poignant, too. Barclay really thought he'd conquered these problems, and then... there he was again.

I actually didn't see this ep for the first time until a few years ago. It was such an exciting discovery, this VOY/TNG crossover I never knew existed.
