Game The Most Disliked Hallucination/Illusion Episode

I'm pulling TOS "Spectre of the Gun." As a kid, this one was probably my absolute favorite. I loved the weird, surreal sets, the Melkot alien and warning bouy, Chekov's apparent death, etc. It was so delightfully strange. I also think the "bad guys" give a bizarrely sinister performance while still conveying that something about them is slightly "off."

I am saving "MOVE ALONG HOME". I know I'm in the tiny minority of those who really love this episode, and I think I've defended this episode more than any other... maybe even more than "Masks".

There is a lot to love about this episode.

1. Quark's great scenes... particularly when he realizes the four missing officers are the pieces and his begging Falow.
2. The costumes of the Wadi. They didn't show their alienness with makeup, but more than made up for it in costuming.
3. An excellent story idea... being stuck inside a game. How many of us have wished we could actually do that with our favorite games... Nintendo, Dungeons & Dragons, Munchkin?
4. Wadi technology... between this and the Tosk/hunters of Tosk, it really shows the Gamma Quadrant to be REALLY highly sophisticated with technology, and that this is their main focus. Superb way of showing how different the Gamma side is with just a little detail like that. I always thought it interesting that the Delta Quadrant was where the Borg came from, and a number of races there seem to be a fair bit behind the Federation, while the Gamma Quadrant seemed to be much further along. I don't think this is a coincidence.
5. We don't see proper First Contact Starfleet protocols often, and this is a rare time... made funny when Falow just wants to go to Quark's. Because Quark's is fun. He didn't walk... but he did RUN! (I know that is from "THE QUICKENING", but I just couldn't help myself.)

So true -- Braga eventually became such a negative for the franchise, I can forget many of his early contributions were FANTASTIC.

I've really come to appreciate "Shades Of Gray" as well. The framing story is quite good, and, decades past original air, all the clips now just feel like a YouTube playlist of fun scenes.

I'll now saved a beloved guilty pleasure ep of mine -- "Night Terrors." It's not good, but I love it anyway, and go to it frequently. It features many of the most comical "useless Troi" moments of the series, the flying thru the green void gets me LOL every time, but I also never fail to get authentically creeped out from the bodies sitting up in the morgue.

I know this is off topic and we can maybe start a thread on this, but Brannon Braga does get a lot of unneeded flak.

A lot of his episodes and stories are great concepts and well done... both in his early days and on VOYAGER.

Having said that, I do think he worked better with a partner, like Joe Menosky. He sometimes needed someone to reign him in a bit. I do think he was a better writer than an executive producer, though... ENTERPRISE is where I think he failed at. He needed a different writing partner than Rick Berman.

ENTERPRISE might have been better had Berman stayed away from writing in seasons 1 and 2 and focused on the production side while Braga wrote and maybe partnered with someone else. Would have been even better if he got Manny Coto in season 1 and teamed with him.

I know all about your weird "Move Along Home" thing, but I somehow totally missed you also are into "Masks"! :bolian:

I'm going to AGAIN go Voyager -- I guess this is the topic of episode where I think Voyager really excelled -- and save "Bliss", which I find absolutely delightful (though it does slightly lose steam in the last act). It's such a great combo of comedy and creepy. I love everyone's glassy-eyed ramblings about how perfect their new Alpha Quadrant lives are going to be, the Seven and Naomi might be the best "saving the ship together" duo we ever get, and W. Morgan Sheppard is a top-shelf guest star. Thumbs up all around!

I'm a huge fan of TNG when it does "creepy"....and the early S2 episode "Where Silence Has Lease" was one of my favorites in that category. It was one of many S2 TNG episodes that made space feel vast, dangerous, unexplored and overwhelming....a sense that sadly the series would almost never capture again.

Besides, the episode has Worf getting all bent out of shape and proclaiming that a ship on has "One Riker...and ONE BRIDGE!!!" How is that not gold?

I am taking this opportunity to save another episode I have to defend sometimes... "Masks".

Admittedly, my love for this episode might be unique to me because I am a huge fan of mythology, and Joe Menosky has a penchant for incorporating mythology into his episodes. This one turns that up several notches.

1. I think it was a brilliant concept, finding an ancient archive that transforms the ship. In a way, it's almost an inversion of "The Inner Light", where the life of one person is lived by one person in their mind. Here, an entire culture is being made physical again.
2. Brent Spiner really shows his acting chops... all his personalities were quite different.
3. As mentioned before, I love mythology, and this episode is ENTIRELY about mythology.
4. We get some good scenes with Picard's archaeology interests. He pieces together things quite well. We rarely got scenes of this hobby of his, but when they happened, they were gold.

There are three I'd easily save, but let's go for and let win

TNG, Season 1: “The Battle”

Early TNG was all over the map, but this one gives Picard some decent backstory as well as being TNG's best Ferengi-based story by far. And it's one of the best episodes remaining on the list so far, with a couple close exceptions. That said, it's not the greatest story; the crew are slow to realize the coincidence between Picard's shiny new headaches and the surprise return of the Stargazer by the Ferengi, but at least Wesley isn't pointing fingers and screaming he'd be listened to if he were of legal drinking age - which also makes for a quaint drinking game for anyone of legal age.

I think I'm in the minority view of thinking the climactic breakdown is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overdone and thus ineffective, but I love everything else "Far Beyond The Stars" has to offer.

It has such a unique tone and entrancing atmosphere. I love how DS9 had so many peculiar digressions like this. It's such a weird idea for an episode, why would you even think it would work? It could have gone so wrong, but it really lands.

I'm one of those weirdos who absolutely loves "The Royale".

It's another example of TNG doing some really out-there concepts in S2. It has such an interesting mix of eerie, funny, creepy, and mystery....and it has some great Worf moments ("WE call it Theta VIII") too.

The parents of General Trelane (retired), a.k.a. "The Squire of Gothos," have asked me to inform you that he must be removed from this sad game. "HARD TIME" is served off this list. The obligatory 'torture O'Brien' episode of season 4, this was acting gold for Colm Meaney. You really feel for the guy. Great scenes with Bashir, too. They both nailed it. This might qualify as the most torturous O'Brien episode since all those years happened and will be with him for the rest of his life. The ending when Molly hugs him happily shouting "Daddy's home!"... during my rewatch, my wife caught me shedding a single man tear when that happened. I feel like giving the man a hug after that episode. Seriously.

The only one of the DS9 main leads I have not met, but it's because he's always working. With acting chops like he shows here, it's no surprise.

Muting DS9, Season 3: “Distant Voices” .

In all honesty, not a terribly strong script or a particularly great episode, but still a nice stand-alone "creepy" episode to watch. I still revisit it with some regularity. Of course, the suspense only is there the first time as long as you don't know what exactly is going on, but that Bashir is in an alternate reality is clear, from the moment he begins to visibly age. But even on repeat viewings, it's still fun him seeing figuring out just what reality. Also shows us a bit of Julian's internal fears.

Future Imperfect, I liked the double twist of the simulation within the simulation, the future reality being fake was obvious but they got me with the romulans being fake too.

So I started posting a reply planning to save Far Beyond the Stars. Alas, I must have been distracted and never posted.

So, I'll save Barge of the Dead, which is one of my favourite B'Elanna episodes from VOY. I just love the whole feel of it, with the beginning of the episode feeling just slightly off, with the crew's enormous Klingon celebration over the discovery of the artefact. However, things are not as they seem, as she is near death, and finds herself on the barge, along with her mother.

It was fascinating meeting Miral, and I loved the scenes with B'Elanna and Janeway discussing whether she can put her life at risk to go and help Miral. Janeway has some lovely maternal moments throughout VOY's run.

I think the barge itself was a wonderful set as well. I always wondered what DS9 would have brought the table when Ron Moore was planning on having a disgraced Mogh appear in a similar way to Worf. To be fair to VOY, the fact that B'Elanna had to confront her issues with her heritage works better as she was always sceptical about Klingon culture.

Saving Shadowplay. I always thought it was a standout episode of the early seasons of DS9 and helps to build up the Dominion before they show up. The idea of the one guy recreating his dead world as holograms that then take on a life of their own was interesting and I liked that they all became aware they were holograms and were allowed to keep on living their lives.

"MEMORIAL" is next for me. I thought it was a great idea, and pretty well executed. The best part, I have to say honestly, is the performances of Beltran, McNeill, Wang, and Phillips. They really sold it... the hell they were feeling was just there in their faces and dialogue. This is a favorite of season 6, which was VERY hit or miss.

(Side note: production wise, this is the second episode in a row those same exact 4 guys in the Delta Flyer had something happen to them. "COLLECTIVE" was produced directly before this one.)

Considering I wouldn't mind Chakotay's flesh... wait, what were we talking about?

TOS, Season 2: "Who Mourns For Adonais?"

^^ best emoticon, ever.

In some ways this episode's got a ridiculous premise, and a partial retread of season 1's gaggle of magical beings. Except this time there's a form of technology hinted at that's powering his tricks (not unlike Trelane from season one as well except Apollo is as po-faced serious as it gets. Trelane was, if anything, inspired by Loki. Not really, he's just a kid with insane powers. Q was based on Loki proper... But I digress.)

And yet it's a surprisingly enjoyable episode.

The theme of being forced to return to an agrarian lifestyle is fascinating if not compelling, if not overly simplistic.

Trek has done the "let's tie ancient myths into the present" before, usually with a one-liner hint, but this is one of the better outings. In part because it's tying in Earth mythology. As a one-off, it works. Every episode doing this sort of thing would not be anywhere as effective.

Kirk's line about finding the one god as sufficient can be perceived in multiple ways; either to appease the predominant religion at the time, or as a form of sarcasm against all religions. Or even for the religion of the viewer viewing the episode. That's very nicely done. :bolian:

Kirk may also be blustering about how it's all in the past and there's no correlating factor other than Apollo noticing them from afar while being all bored and horny and would prefer his subjects tending to the sheep... I dunno. I'll get back to this in a sec...

To compare, there's a great scene on the bridge when Spock notes the importance of Uhura's task as she is literally the only one capable of getting the communications circuit working, which is critical to getting Kirk and crew back. It'd have been nice if Palamas was a backup communications operator who also specialized in archaeology and anthropology, which would take care of a staffing issue where they don't have backups should the main person be taken ill or are on holiday.

Back to the main plot, I suspect it may have been influence on other sci-fi where some entity was threatening the protagonists to revert to a no-technology environment. Only without the big 30 foot entree to look forward to for dessert. Mmmm, chocolate saucew and whipped cream...

The special effects are phenomenally good for this time period. Especially with the picnic table in the foreground, despite it shrouding some of Apollo's yummy calves. Mmm, veal...

The acting in this episode really sells the whole episode with such total sincerity from the actors, could this be an example of why Gene Coon wrote "Spock's Brain" on a dare - because everyone took it seriously (and to its credit and longevity)? An alien with a force field in the shape of his big hand really is "out there", but to be fair Apollo probably didn't want to give his shiny new flock a bunch of heart attacks by banging something invisible so he used a visage of something they could relate to.

Michael Forest in particular has some acting chops to go with those lovely pork chops too. And considering he had his chestal area caked with make-up to hide the apparently squeamish bits as well, why not just have it all covered up instead? (They really were on something in the 1960s weren't they?! :guffaw:)

Ditto for Leslie Parrish. While there is some casual sexism in the script, her acting in standing up to a muscular bloke with enough strength to pummel all of us simultaneously really adds some added authenticity to the proceedings.

Back to Apollo and being lonely. While the trope of disappearing to die or return to incorporeal state was largely done to death already by this point, Apollo's twist is that he's giving up this life to return to his contemporaries. I don't recall if this trope was used in later episodes, but at least for this episode it didn't feel worn out and, indeed, felt genuinely tragic. One last hurrah as far as the trope's return goes. That's how good this story sells itself.

Indeed, what might it have been like if Apollo's friends he spoke of were all at the picnic table being bored and somehow just as lonely as he was? (What, the hand wasn't big enough?!) Indeed, could Kirk spend an eternity teaching loooove to them? Kirk never was that much an optimist, was he...

Lastly, here's a little Photoshop homage I forgot I did ages ago. I don't remember why but it wasn't on a dare:
