THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of hallucination or alien illusion episodes from every series, except "Picard" and "Short Treks." Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

In the 2019 Least Disliked games, this was run as two lists -- "Alien Illusion" and "It's Happening In My Mind!" The distinction seemed to be confusing -- Trek has sooooo many types of altered realities, and the nature of them is often unclear and overlapping, so it was difficult to figure out a reasonable way to sub-divide them -- so this time I just collapsed them all into one list. The Least Disliked 2019 winner's were TNG: "The Survivors" for "Alien Illusion" and DS9: "Hard Time" for "It's Happening In My Mind!"

Can I save all but ten of them now? Oh, okay, one at a time per usual rules.

Well, having seen it recently,

TNG, Season 3: "The Survivors"

gets to survive this time.

This episode feels like the show is finding new ground despite season 3 starting with a highly confident style that hits a home run... but at the time feels definitively Star Trek.

The mystery with Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge is excellently handled and, indeed, is a tragic one in so many ways.

Both Uxbridges (John Anderson, Anne Haney) are extremely well acted, with both actors being a coup for the show.

The use of horror inflicted on Troi really gets one feeling for her character. The way Troi describes it really sells it in ways merely hearing the music could not.

The revelation that Kevin wiped out an entire species, the Husnok, spanning the galaxy - all fifty billion of the fritters - and only with a mere thought should seem silly but ends up feeling breathtaking. Especially with Picard's monologue at the end. The verve of the production and acting makes all this enough to buy into, which is no easy feat.

If anything, the prop Kevin uses can also be seen in the TV Show "Married... with Childen", in the fifth episode "Married... with Aliens", which is outright hysterical. Leonard Lightfoot (from that otherwise bizarre sitcom "Silver Spoons" also makes an appearance.)

John Anderson (Kevin) - was only 67 at the time. Looked 87. Or maybe it was the make-up.

"If Memory Serves" is my favorite Discovery episode so far, and I immediately felt it belonged alongside the greatest Trek episodes ever. The return to Talos is note perfect in every way, and almost justifies Discovery's prequel timeframe all by itself. Melissa George as Vina is brilliant casting.

Eliminating TNG, Season 5: “The Inner Light” . Some people maintain that the plot is a bit flimsy (which I can understand, viewed objectively. But even then the idea of a civilisation with no means to survive in a last-ditch effort throws together this probe so that at least someone in the distant future will remember them tugs at my heartstrings) But what really makes this episode is the intensity of Stewart's acting of his Picard character, gradually learning to accept and embrace his new life, and becoming a constructive and loving member of his new found community. This, in my opinion, is still one of TNG's very greatest episodes, one that shouldn't be long on such a "list of shame".

"Warlord" is a favorite Voyager episode of mine. I love the Trek trope of possessed characters, the only problem being that the story becomes about the other characters relating to the body invader -- the possessed character themselves are effectively lost in the narrative. This ep gets around that with the great head battles between Kes and Tieran as they vie for control of the body.

It also manages to dabble in queerness without being offensive about it, an exceedingly rare accomplishment in Berman Trek (I think just this and "Rejoined").

Pulling "The Cage". Even as a stand-alone if Star Trek never existed, it's just a nice piece of science fiction. Well-written, thoughtful, good characters...and it's high place in Star Trek lore speaks for itself.

I'll save Lethe. I'm not the biggest fan of Discovery's approach to using canon elements as the basis for its stories, and I'm pretty tired of plots where the hero has to go into the mind of another character in order to heal their psychological wounds, but this episode managed to make those two elements work well and provide insight into Sarek and Spock's conflict that felt natural.

I can't believe I keep saving Voyager episodes, but "One" is another highlight for me, I have seen this ep a billion times. Even among the Seven showcase episodes, which were usually quite strong, this one stands out. It's also a great use of the inside-the-head plot device, those climactic hallucinations are intense, and really serve to illuminate Seven's characters -- so often, these head trips just add up to "here's some freaky random weirdness!"

It always cracks me up that in the very next ep, Janeway yells at Seven: "We've given you a lot -- it's time you gave something in return!" Honey, she JUST manned the ship single-handedly for OVER A MONTH, and nearly sacrificed her own life at the end of it to save the rest of you!

What a wonderfully varied list of episodes. There have been some which easily class as classics, and also a fair amount that qualify alongside series lows.

I'll save Frame of Mind, an episode I would refer to as peak-Braga. It's a great episode, as your're never quite sure if what we are seeing is reality or not. Riker playing an insane man in the play the perfect way to have him start questioning himself.

Remove the clip show elements and there's a halfway decent episode in there, with truly alien planet with a palpable sense of threat. something Trek didn't often do convincingly. The clip show bits may harm the episode but they don't by any means ruin it.

I'll save Frame of Mind, an episode I would refer to as peak-Braga.

So true -- Braga eventually became such a negative for the franchise, I can forget many of his early contributions were FANTASTIC.

I've really come to appreciate "Shades Of Gray" as well. The framing story is quite good, and, decades past original air, all the clips now just feel like a YouTube playlist of fun scenes.

I'll now saved a beloved guilty pleasure ep of mine -- "Night Terrors." It's not good, but I love it anyway, and go to it frequently. It features many of the most comical "useless Troi" moments of the series, the flying thru the green void gets me LOL every time, but I also never fail to get authentically creeped out from the bodies sitting up in the morgue.

Dang, 2 of them instantly spring to my twilighty zoneout mind, but let's starft with

TNG, Season 7: “Phantasms”

Mmmmm, with mint frosting. An episode that revolves around a metaphor that also contains metaphors; none of which the censors objected to. But that's not why I liked it. The sense of strangeness and mystery, and characters acting goofy - it's generally a nice filler treat. With mint frosting.

It also led to a meme, about futuristic Android smartphones with unlimited data. And we all know, Data is a fully functional party line. Unless you ask about it in "The Outrageous Okona" but programming an android to have sexual desire is even more disturbing than everything they already did up to that time... and for my next tangent, let's talk about the whipped cream dolloped on top of the delicious cake with mint frosting...
